The only existing autograph of Fox Talbot on the international market at the time of cataloging. Very rare ! William Henry Fox Talbot 11 February 1800 17 September 1877 was a British scientist inventor and photography pioneer who invented the salted paper and calotype processes precursors to photographic processes of the later 19th and 20th centuries. His work in the 1840s on photomechanical reproduction led to the creation of the photoglyphic engraving process the precursor to photogravure. He was the holder of a controversial patent which impacted the early development of commercial photography in Britain. He was also a noted photographer who contributed to the development of photography as an artistic medium. He published The Pencil of Nature 184446 which was illustrated with original salted paper prints from his calotype negatives and made some important early photographs of Oxford Paris Reading and York. Simple modern green wooden frame. = A fine lively powerful illustration of a lion fighting a snake. After an original drawing by the British artist James Northcote 1746-1831 whose illustrations of lions and tigers are among his most captivating. Northcote was a pupil of the great British portrait painter Sir Joshua Reynolds 1723-1792 first president of the Royal Academy of Arts. The French engraver Renard about whom little else is known - he is not listed by Bénézit - enhanced Northcote's original by a skilful use of shades. Published by the firm of Boulet rue Chabannais in Paris. Some spotting but hardly visible. A small defect in the upper margin otherwise very good. unknown
