The highly sought after eighth volume of this important journal featuring William Henry Fox Talbot’s original salt print with a letterpress caption pasted underneath: “The Palace of Justice at Rouen. From Nature 1843†and a letterpress label pasted on the reverse: “Patent Talbotype or sun picturesâ€. The volume also contains sixteen other exemplary plates. Binding quite good text stained.A text-book written by Fox intended for use in his instructing students in agriculture at the University of Michigan.Rev. Charles Fox 1815-1854 born in England. He emigrated to the United States in 1836 was ordained in the Protestant Episcopal Church bought a farm on Grosse Ile near Jackson Michigan 1843 and had a church built on the property. Fox owned a large farm and took an avid interest in agriculture becoming editor of The Farmer's Companion and the writer of this Text Book for Farmers. In 1853 he began to give lectures in agriculture to students in the university at Ann Arbor and in 1854 he was appointed the first professor of theoretical and practical agriculture in the University of Michigan. Rev. Fox died from cholera in July 1854 before he began his professorship.The inscription of his monument in Burns Park in Ann Arbor reads: "Charles Fox - Professor of Agriculture the first one chosen for this university he had already won for himself and his studies many friends and the people were aroused to great hope for this new science. While holding this office for only the second year he was snatched away by sudden and premature death. From his native Britain where his worthy and well-born parents had educated the boy in the village of Westoe and Doctor Arnold Mustius had instructed his youth in the town of Rugby the young man betook himself to Michigan. Having been ordained a priest or the Protestant Episcopal Church he dedicated to God a house built at his own expense on Grosse Isle. He who with most noteworthy character great faith and unusual humanity had made his skill in literature and natural science equal to his extraordinary talent is mourned by none more than by the University. Originally apprenticed to a barber Fox became a soldier in the militia as a substitute for his employer was discharged and later signed aboard a 20-gun ship the Protector used to protect American shipping and to annoy the British. In his second cruise he was captured by the British and put aboard the prison ship Jersey. Conditions on this prison ship were intolerable and Fox was forced to "join the British." He was sent to Jamaica where he ultimately escaped by sea to Cuba eventually returning to Boston in May 1783. Contents tight and very clean very good copy. One of the most significant 18th century collections of Natural History and Ethnography. A catalogue of the museum's holdings that includes a section entitled "Utensils of Savage Nations" which includes material from New Zealand "Owhyhee and other Sandwich Islands" "Otaheite and Society Islands" George's Island the Pacific Northwest etc including material collected during Cook's voyages and a number of natural history specimens are described like the wombat illustrated the koala and the duck-billed platypus from Australia and an extensive foreign ornithological section which includes many specimens from the South Seas. Forbes lists only one copy and could find no references to this rare work. Some spotting or browning to plates and offsetting from plates to text. Interior contents fresh and clean. Talbot's paper: pp. 623-627. <br/><br/><em>First printing of the paper in which Talbot describes how he worked out the method of instant photography. He patented it in 1852 and 1858. "The beginning of high speed photography might be considered to be William Henry Fox Talbot's experiment in 1851. He attached a page of the London Times newspaper to a wheel which was rotated in front of his wet plate camera in a darkened room. As the wheel rotated Talbot exposed a few square inches of the newspaper page for about 1/2000th of a second using spark illumination from Leyden jars. This experiment resulted in a readable image." </em> unknown

The Front and rear boards are detached and there is no spine. A little rubbing to the edges and staining to the rear board. Inside are the title plus 31 plates. Complete Plate 12 shows a balloonist attempting to relieve the siege. Some darkening to the illustration. Inside the 32 hand coloured sheets are in very good condition. There is a little darkening to the title sheet and slight handling to the edges of the sheets but overall in very nice shape. The title has a tear and a couple of small nicks repaired with archival tape. Caricatures of life in Paris during the siege of Paris in 1870/71. 340 by 255mm 13½ by 10 inches. . Première édition. Complète. Chemise cartonnée avec un double de la page de titre collé sur la première planche. Les planches avant et arrière sont détachées et il n'y a pas de dos. Un peu de frottement sur les bords et des taches sur la planche arrière. A l'intérieur se trouvent le titre et 31 planches. Complet. La planche 12 montre un aérostier tentant de soulager le siège. Les illustrations sont un peu plus sombres. A l'intérieur les 32 feuilles colorées à la main sont en très bon état. Il y a un peu de noircissement sur la feuille de titre et une légère manipulation sur les bords des feuilles mais dans l'ensemble en très bon état. Le titre présente une déchirure et quelques petites entailles réparées avec du ruban adhésif d'archivage.
