Gustavus Vasa Fox June 13 1821October 29 1883 was an officer of the United States Navy who served during the Mexican-American War and as Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War. Born at Saugus Massachusetts and a student at Phillips Academy Andover Massachusetts 1835 Fox was appointed midshipman 12 January 1838. During the Mexican-American War he served in the brig Washington in the squadron of Commodore Matthew Perry and took active part in the second expedition against Tabasco Mexico 14-16 January 1847 which resulted in the capture of that town. He was in command of several mail steamers and after his resignation 30 July 1856 engaged in the manufacture of woolen materials. At the start of the American Civil War he volunteered for service. He was given a temporary appointment in the Navy and was sent in the steamer Baltic to the relief of Major Robert Anderson and the remnant of his command in Fort Sumter and brought them away. Gustavus V. Fox On 1 August 1861 President Abraham Lincoln appointed him Assistant Secretary of the Navy under Secretary Gideon Welles an office which he held until the close of the Civil War. In 1882 he published a paper suggesting Samana Cay in the Bahamas to be Guanahani or San Salvador the first island Christopher Columbus reached at his discovery of the Americas. Little attention was paid to it until 1986 when the National Geographic Society also appointed Samana Cay to be San Salvador. He died at Lowell Massachusetts aged 62. Wikipedia paperback

Though his greatest contributions were probably in the field of medical bibliography his first love was Goethe. Samuel Naylor the editor & translator of this edition was a great friend of Goethe who was originally responsible for this version. He wrote: "The Low-German edition Reinke de Vos. is that from which I have worked hovering. between translation and paraphrase." This particular edition is really quite scarce. Regimental Losses in the American Civil War 1861-1865 is a large statistical study by Union veteran William F. Fox that quantifies combat and mortality in Union regiments using official federal and state military records. The opening chapters analyze the nature of Civil War casualties - distinguishing killed in action died of wounds and died of disease; calculating maximum numbers and percentages killed in single regiments and battles; and comparing losses among different arms of service infantry cavalry artillery and among white volunteer regular and United States Colored Troops units. Subsequent chapters identify what Fox terms the three hundred fighting regiments giving each a short historical sketch a list of its principal engagements and detailed tables of its killed and mortally wounded by company together with total enrollment and percentage lost - designed to show which organizations saw the heaviest and most continuous fighting. Much of the volume is devoted to regiment-by-regiment and state-by-state statistical tables that record for every Union regiment and battery the number killed or mortally wounded deaths from disease and other causes total deaths and in many cases losses in specific battles. Fox then broadens his treatment with chapters that aggregate casualties by army and corps present chronological lists of battles with their official casualty figures and estimate Confederate regimental and army losses for comparison drawing on the Official Records and other contemporary documentation.</p> Albany Publishing Company hardcover
