Fine in full light green leather covered boards with four raised bands on the spine with gilt text and decorations stamped in the compartments and with gilt tool work on both the front and rear boards. The end papers are silk with a matching silk placement ribbon sewn-in at the head of the spine. All three edges of the text block are in gilt. A octavo measuring 8 1/2 by 6 inches containing 610 pages of text including an index. One of the volumes in The Franklin Press' collection of The Great Books Of The Western World. A further application of Darwin's theory of tidal friction to the motion of the planets round the sun opened up the wider question of the genesis of the solar system.
