63363Leipzig Weger after a photograph of ca. 1880. Print size 20.0 x 15.0 cm paper size 30.1 x 39.6 cm. = Engraved portrait by August Weger 1823-1892. The portrait "nach ein Photographie" show Charles Darwin in old age with his iconic beard. His autograph is printed below. The photo may be one made in 1877 by Lock and Whitfield. Weger was a German engraver and printer. Weger is known for his portraits of famous people such as the writer Friedrich Gerstäcker the composer Robert Schumann and apparently Charles Darwin. A very wide-margined and spotless print. Rare. unknown

Binding slightly rubbed with a few tiny white marks inner paper hinge partially cracked pale browning to endpapers minor fox spots to folding plate slight shelf wear to lower edges otherwise contents clean and bright binding tight and firm. A very good copy. See R. B. Freeman The Works of Charles Darwin pages 79-81 and page 86 No. 439. This is a reprint of the edition of 1876 which contained Darwin's final text. This contained small differences in text from the edition of 1872. The word 'evolution' was used for the first time in the 6th edition of 1872. Darwin had used it before in the first edition of the Descent of Man in the previous year but it doesn't appear in On Origin of Species until 1872. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2005. In the twenty-nine essays in this collection Darwin elaborates on such varied topics as his boyhood attachment to tin soldiers his "fundamentalist's" faith in Sherlockiana his affection for small railroad junctions situated thrillingly close to some favorite golf links the "restful excitement" of watching a cricket match and the pleasures of a day spent in bed.
