The fifth edition with additions and corrections of Charles Darwin's 1809-1882 seminal work. Considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology The Origin of Species introduces the theory of natural selection which states that species populations alter and diversify over generations - branching out from a shared common ancestor. 1871 proved a vexing year for Darwin as he received persistent criticism from zoologist St George Jackson Mivart who in his Genesis of Species 1871 accused Darwin among other allegations of being 'Dogmatic' in his assertions. In response Darwin who struggled to remain even- tempered in conversations with his rival gathered a selection of material to refute Mivart's claims; the revised sixth edition of the Origin of Species published the following year contained supporting research from Alexander Agassiz Abraham Dee Bartlett Albert Günther George Busk T. H. Huxley Osbert Salvin and William Henry. Freeman F390b. Fifth edition with additions and corrections. 8vo. Appleton and Company hardcover

The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animalswas Darwin's third major work of evolutionary theory following On the Origin of Species 1859 and The Descent of Man 1871. In this work Darwin explores the biological aspects of emotional behaviour and the animal origins of human emotional expression. To illustrate human emotion Darwin used photographs by five different photographers most notably Oscar Gustave Rejlander 18131875 who contributed 19 of the 30 photographs. The heliotype plates are among the earliest commercially reproduced photographs in a scientific book.Freeman 1142. John Murray hardcover

189233339London: John Murray 1892. An early reprinting of the first edition of 1872 the eleventh thousand. Well decorated with 21 illustrations throughout the text and with 7 Heliotype Plates from photographs. 8vo publisher's original dark green cloth lettered decorated and ruled in gilt on spine and with ornately framed borders on the upper cover and on the lower cover in blind. viii 394 pp. A beautifully preserved copy internally fine the binding very bright and clean and very solid and sturdy with the hinges in good order the colour holding strong with no hint of fading a small chip to the free-fly and a few spots to the pastedowns. A HANDSOME COPY FRESH AND FINE AND UNUSUALLY SO FOR ANY 19TH CENTURY PRINTING OF DARWIN. This is an important volume of Darwin's evolutionary writings and was written in part at least as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment. It was more importantly along with his 1871 book ‘The Descent of Man’ part of Darwin's attempt to address questions of human origins and human psychology using his theory of evolution by natural selection. Darwin noted the universal nature of facial expressions in the book: ".the young and the old of widely different races both with man and animals express the same state of mind by the same movements. 187733614London: John Murray 1877. Second edition revised. With numerous illustrations. 8vo publisher's original green cloth lettered in gilt on spine and blocked in blind on the covers. xvi 300 Index 32 ads. pp. A handsome and pleasing copy bright and clean and beautifully preserved. EARLY PRINTING IN VERY PLEASING CONDITION. One of Darwin's most important but often overlooked works. The LIFE AND LETTERS of Darwin III p. 274 quotes Asa Gray as saying that "if the Orchid-book with a few trifling omissions had appeared before the 'Origin' the author would have been canonised rather than anathematised by the natural theologians" and noted that a review in the 'Literary Churchman' found only one fault "that Mr. Darwin's expression of admiration at the contrivances in orchids is too indirect a way of saying 'O Lord how manifold are Thy works.'"
The book was concerned with working out in detail the relationships between sexual structures of orchids and the insects which fertilize them their evolution being attributed to natural selection and therefore was the first of the volumes of "supporting evidence" for his ORIGIN OF SPECIES. Although it was praised highly by botanists it did not sell well only about 6000 copies by the turn of the century. John Murray hardcover

2005140401Philadelphia: Running Press 2005. First edition of this compilation of Charles Darwin's most influential works in their entirety contained for the first time in one volume. Thick Octavo original boards. Presentation copy warmly inscribed by James Watson to his friends on the half-title page "For Peter and Dori from Jim." Fine in a fine dust jacket. Text includes commentary by Nobel laureate James Watson. Included in this volume are four of the most influential works of Charles Darwin reprinted in their entirety each with commentary from Nobel Prize-winning scientist James D. Watson. Included are On the Origin of Species arguably the most important scientific work of the nineteenth century; Voyage of the Beagle a captivating travelogue richly stocked with observations that helped guide the young Darwin through his evolutionary world view; The Descent of Man which explored the origins of humans and their history; and The Expressions of Emotions in Man and Animals which explored the origin and nature of the mind. With his separate introductions for each of Darwin's books he goes further to explain how the modern considerations underlying genome research would have been impossible without Darwin bringing a contemporary relevance to these nineteenth century masterworks. 18681224New York: Orange Judd 1868. 1st American Edition. Two volume FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of "ONE OF DARWIN'S MOST INFLUENTIAL AND WIDE-RANGING BOOKS. IT IS ALSO HIS LONGEST AND MOST DETAILED WORK" Freeman The Works of Charles Darwin 879. It is also "the only section of Darwin's big book on the origin of species which was printed in his lifetime and corresponding to its first two intended chapters" ibid.

Darwin's intent was "to provide overwhelming evidence for the ubiquity of variation" Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. "This work is notable not only for Darwin's prodigious amassing of facts concerning artificial selection of traits to demonstrate an analogy for natural selection. It also advances his hypothesis of pangenesis and gemmules as the agents of the inheritance of characteristics" DSB.

Darwin's hypothesis of pangenesis "here expounded for the first time" Freeman. Was the by "means of which he tried to frame an explanation of hereditary resemblance inheritance of acquired characters atavism and regeneration. It was a brave attempt to account for a number of phenomena which were beyond the bounds of scientific knowledge in his day such as fertilization by the union of sperm with egg the mechanism of chromosomal inheritance and the development of the embryo by successive cell division. His hypothesis of pangenesis could not therefore give a permanently acceptable account of the multitude of phenomena it was designed to explain. It was however a point of departure for particulate theories of inheritance in the latter nineteenth century' DSB Freeman. "Other chapters consider "the amount and nature of the changes which animals or plants have undergone whilst under man's dominion" employing observations of inheritance within a species in an effort to understand the causes of variability" ibid.

While as said Darwin's two volumes "were intended to provide overwhelming evidence for the ubiquity of variation" they also "incidentally answered Lyell and Gray who maintained that variations had not occurred purely by chance but were providentially directed. Darwin showed that breeders indeed selected from a vast array of minute random variations. He gave numerous instances of the causes of variability including the direct effect of the conditions of life reversion the effects of use and disuse saltation prepotency and correlated growth" Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
