The paper was first published in 1865 in the Journal of the Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London Freeman 833 later same year it was corrected and published in book form from which the present translation is made Freeman 1834 Darwin described the origins and writing of this book in his autobiography: "In the autumn of 1864 I finished a long paper on Climbing Plants and sent it to the Linnean Society. The writing of this paper cost me four months: but I was so unwell when I received the proof-sheets that I was forced to leave them very badly and often obscurely expressed. The paper was little noticed but when in 1875 it was corrected and published as aseparate book it sold well. I was led to take up this subject by reading a short paper by Asa Gray published in 1858 on the movements of the tendrils of a Cucurbitacean plant. He sent me seeds and on raising some plants I was so much fascinated and perplexed by the revolving movements of the tendrils and stems which movements are really very simple though appearing at first very complex that I procured various other kinds of Climbing Plants and studied the whole subject. I was all the more attracted to it from not being at all satisfied with the explanation which Henslow gave us in his Lectures about Twining plants namely that they had a natural tendency to grow up in a spire. This explanation proved quite erroneous. Some of the adaptations displayed by climbing plants are as beautiful as those by Orchids for ensuring cross-fertilisation."The first edition did not appear in America nor was it translated in Darwin's lifetime but has a recent facsimile. The second appeared in French German and Italian and in America from English stereos.Freeman 863. unknown

Octavo 8" x 5 1/4 bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine and ruled in black with design to cover. DSB Freeman 1143. cf Garrison & Morton 4975 First American edition.

The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals is Charles Darwin's third major work of evolutionary theory following On The Origin of Species1859 and The Descent of Man 1871. Originally intended as a section of The Descent of Man it was published separately in 1872 and concerns the biological aspects of emotional life. In this book Darwin sets out some early concepts of behavioral genetics and explores the origins of such human characteristics as the lifting of the eyebrows in moments of surprise and the mental confusion which typically accompanies blushing. A German translation of The Expression appeared in 1872; Dutch and French translations followed in 1873 and 1874. A second edition of the book was published in 1890. Before Darwin human emotional life had posed problems to the traditional philosophical categories of mind and body. Darwin's biological approach links mental states to the neurological organization of movement and he allows cultural factors only an auxiliary role in the shaping of expression. Darwin's interest can be traced to his time as a medical student and the 1824 publication of Sir Charles Bell's Anatomy and Philosophy of Expression which argued for a spiritual dimension to the subject. Darwin sought out the opinions of some leading British psychiatrists notably James Crichton-Browne in the preparation of the book which forms his main contribution to psychology. Amongst the innovations with this book are Darwin's circulation of a questionnaire probably inspired by his cousin Francis Galton in his preparatory research; simple psychology experiments on emotional recognition with his friends and family; and borrowing from Duchenne de Boulogne a physician at the Salpêtrière the use of photographs in his presentation of scientific information. The Expression of the Emotions is an important landmark in the history of book illustration. 187321091101New York: D. Appleton and Company 1873. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. First US edition octavo size 396 pp. Charles Robert Darwin 1809-1882 was interested in the origins of life from a young age and when the "Beagle" had an opening for a naturalist his interest and reputation for "collecting observing & noting any thing worthy to be noted in Natural History" earned him the post on this voyage which would last for five years and which would become duly famous. It would become 'the key formative event in Darwin's life" and the many species he observed both living and extinct would foster "an intellectual ferment and fortify him to re-evaluate all of natural history" n.b. quote from the online Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

This work "The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals" is "Charles Darwin's third major work of evolutionary theory following 'On the Origin of Species' 1859 and 'The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex' 1871. Initially intended as a chapter in Descent of Man Expression grew in length and was published separately in 1872. Darwin explores the biological aspects of emotional behaviour and the animal origins of human characteristics like smiling and frowning shrugging shoulders lifting eyebrows in surprise and baring teeth in an angry sneer" n.b. quote from Wiki. He "examined the causes physiological and psychological of all the fundamental emotions in man and animals. He concluded that 'the chief expressive actions exhibited by man and by the lower animals are now innate or inherited' and that most of the movements of expression must have been gradually acquired. This is the only book by Darwin illustrated with photographs" n.b. quote from the online History of Medicine and the Life Sciences.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full rust-coloured cloth over boards both boards with ruled borders and decorations in black the spine with gilt ruled borders and lettering light yellow coated endpapers with twenty-one in-text illustrations and seven Heliotype plates the plate facing p. 264 being a four-panel foldout fourteen pages of publisher's ads at the rear; octavo size 8" by 5 1/4" pagination: i-iii iv-viii 1 2-374 14-page publisher's catalogue at rear.

___CONDITION: Volume now near fine we had a professional name available upon request restore the joints head and tail of the spine; the boards clean straight corners without rubbing a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and the sole prior owner marking we see a short gift inscription in pencil on the front free endpaper "from name to Prof Lakoff"; some overall light toning to the paper the four-panel fold-out illustration with a shallow crease at the top right margin and the fold between the third and fourth panels apparently having been neatly mended with glue at some point.

___CITATION: Freeman no. 1143; Garrison & Morton no. 4975.

___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. A FINE COPY OF THIS ELUSIVE BOOK. Darwin considered this book to "form a complement to that on the Fertilisation of Orchids". "This book will form a a compliment to that on the Fertilisation of Orchids in which I showed how perfect were the means for cross-fertilisation and here I shall show how important are the results.
The LIFE AND LETTERS of Darwin III p. 274 quotes Asa Gray as saying that "if the Orchid-book with a few trifling omissions had appeared before the 'Origin' the author would have been canonised rather than anathematised by the natural theologians" and noted that a review in the 'Literary Churchman' found only one fault "that Mr. Darwin's expression of admiration at the contrivances in orchids is too indirect a way of saying 'O Lord how manifold are Thy works.'"
The book was concerned with working out in detail the relationships between sexual structures of orchids and the insects which fertilize them their evolution being attributed to natural selection and therefore was the first of the volumes of "supporting evidence" for his ORIGIN OF SPECIES. THE EFFECTS OF CROSS AND SELF FERTILISATION continues the work begun in 'ORCHIDS". John Murray hardcover
