He is considered one of the greatest floral and botanical illustrators during the Napoleonic Era and after.</p><p>Half brown leather with gilt title spine rubbed red cloth boards stained and scratched marble endpapers book block solid. All plates mounted on hinges text and plates with foxing and spotting to edges pencil numbers to all plates but engravings very crisp and sharp.</p><p>Good uncoloured set of this increasingly rare series by two giants of natural history illustration.</p> F. La rédaction de ces tomes est due à Magdeleine de Saint-Agy, qui indique avoir "complété" le cours de Cuvier, d'après la sténographie prise au cours des leçons au Collège de France. Ces deux volumes parus isolément se rencontrent rarement. Ces leçons de Cuvier commencèrent à la fin de l'année 1829, au moment où il réintégra sa chaire au Collège de France. Il s'agit de son tout dernier cours, qu'il laissa inachevé à sa mort. Le célèbre naturaliste, qui n'avait pas prévu d'en faire la publication, ne les avait pas non plus retranscrits dans leur totalité : confiant dans son talent d'orateur, il réalisait de "brillants discours (...) improvisés sur de simples notes et [qui] n'existent plus maintenant" (Sarah Lee, p. 226-228). Néanmoins, ses cours ont fait l'objet, dans les feuilletons du Temps, de comptes-rendus médiocres, qu'il réprouvait. Magdeleine de Saint-Agy annonce ainsi rattraper les erreurs des journaux, en prétendant avoir l'assentiment de Cuvier : "[J'écrivis] à M. le baron Cuvier. Le 10 avril 1830, il me fit l'honneur de me répondre : qu'il n'avait aucun motif personnel d'empêcher que je publiasse ses leçons; mais qu'il faudrait éviter la foule d'anachronismes et d'altérations de noms d'auteurs qui s'était glissée dans les articles des journaux; car autrement mon travail serait peu utile" (préface du rédacteur, tome Ier de l'Histoire des sciences naturelles, 1841, p. Cuvier y traite de la chimie, de l'étude de la chaleur, de la lumière et de l'électricité et également de l'histoire naturelle dans une acceptation large, couvrant la météorologie, l'hydrologie, la minéralogie, la géologie, l'anatomie, la physiologie, ainsi que la botanique et la zoologie. Le naturaliste souligne l'importance des travaux de Haüy dans le domaine de la cristallographie et repère deux révolutions majeures : celle que Lavoisier a opéré dans le domaine de la chimie et celle que Jussieu et lui-même ont initié avec la méthode naturelle de classification systématisée. "Les innovations techniques et médicales ne sont pas oubliées, mais sont considérées comme des applications des progrès scientifiques. À travers éloges des savants et explications didactiques des découvertes, Cuvier se fait un point d'honneur de reconnaître les apports étrangers. Cependant le souci de la gloire nationale fait bon ménage avec l'universalisme puisqu'il entend que la France impériale se distingue par son impartialité" (Drouin). See DSB: "In 1804 wanting to place the Montmartre bed of fossil formations in time Cuvier with Brongniart began research that led to Géographie minéralogique des environs de Paris 1808 1811 which was rewritten and greatly expanded as Description géologique des environs de Paris 1822 1835. In this work a landmark in the history of geology Cuvier played a lesser role. Brongniart did the necessary fieldwork drawing his inspiration from the works of Buffon Soulavie Ramond Palassu especially Lamarck; the latter had described the fossil invertebrates of the Paris region and in his Hydrogéologie 1802 had set forth the bases of the theory of "current causes" later developed by Constant Prévost. Cuvier respecting the short chronology of the Bible was forced to assume in addition to "current causes" which act very slowly rapid catastrophes and global upheavals which had no basis in fact". This proof was based upon the 1808 text published in the Annales du Muséum d'Histoire naturelle volume XI pp. 293-326. We have added a few pages in photocopy of the final text for comparison.
