Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1680, dalla serie dal titolo Livre de Fleurs par Vauquer stampata e pubblicata a Parigi dall'editore e mercante di stampe Francois de Poilly intorno al 1680. Vauquer (o Vauquier) era un incisore, disegnatore e incisore di oro (1621-86). Le sue superbe stampe mostrano una delicata incisione, secondo le sue composizioni e quelle di Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer, suo maestro e parente. A parte alcuni soggetti biblici su fondo nero per medaglie, tabacchiere o casse di orologi, egli rappresentò soprattutto fiori in bouquet o in vasi, cesti, ghirlande o fregi. Vauquer è considerato uno dei più prestigiosi disegnatori di composizioni di fiori del Seicento europeo, i suoi lavori sono inseriti nelle più importanti collezioni pubbliche e private del mondo. Questi furono pubblicati da Nicolas Langlois (1640-1703) o François de Poilly (1623-93), spesso raggruppati in serie: Livre de fleurs (10 tavole); Vases de fleurs propre pour les peintres, brodeurs et dessinateurs (40 tavole); Livres de fleurs propre pour les orfèvres et graveurs (8 tavole, firmate v. f. con l'annotazione à Blois). Vauquer (or Vauquier) was an etcher, draughtsman and gold-engraver (1621-86). His superb prints show a ‘delicate line, after his own compositions and those of Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer, his master and kinsman. Apart from a few biblical subjects on black ground for medals, snuff-boxes or watch-cases, he mostly represented flowers in bouquets or in vases, baskets, garlands or friezes. These were published by Nicolas Langlois (1640–1703) or François de Poilly (1623–93), often grouped in series: Livre de fleurs (10 pls); Vases de fleurs propre pour les peintres, brodeurs et dessinateurs (40 pls); Livres de fleurs propre pour les orfèvres et graveurs (8 pls, signed v. f. with the annotation à Blois). According to Mariette, Vauquer was skilled in drawing flowers and particularly excelled in engraving flowers and other decorations on jewellery’ (Grove Art). Contemporary and later collections of these plates are rare and show considerable variation, the individual parts and probably the plates themselves sold and bound to order. Dust jacket not price clipped or torn or creased. 244pp. David Douglas, the most extraordinary and most prolifically successful botanist of all time, travelled between 1823 and 1834 all over the North American continent on behalf of the Royal Horticultural Society of London. His name is perhaps best remembered for the Douglas fir. He shot the rapids of the Columbia River, braved onrushing grizzly bears and Indian arrows, climbed peaks in the Rockies, fell in love with a Chinook Princess, and finally, when only thirty five, died in mystifying circumstances in a cattle pit in Hawaii.
