"I confess I have taken all knowledge to be my province," declared Bacon in the year 1592. The Baconian credo has ruled the Western consciousness ever since. With the introduction of western learning in India we imbibed the Baconian belief in the universality of all knowledge. In practice, however, it meant-thanks to the colonial bondage-the universality of western knowledge only. This was particularly disabling for a country like India which had three thousand years of History and culture of its own. It meant for the most part an engagement with ideas and issues that were either irrelevant or peripheral and joining in a rat race in which we were doomed to be laggards. No wonder one of our social scientists once ruefully observed, "We are neither Asian nor scientists. We are beggars, all of us-we sneak under many an academic table to gather the crumbs under them.", , Long before independence, sensitive minds had voiced their dissatisfaction with the prevailing situation. K.C. Bhattacharya warned against mindless acceptance of western ideas and pleaded far "discovering our own self”. Other illustrious "swarajists" are Tagore, Nauroji, Ranade and of course Gandhi. More recently Dube, Joshi and Daya Krishna have emphasised the socio-cultural matrix of ideas., , May be, by bringing philosophers, sociologists, litterateurs and political activists on one platform, we could take a step in the right direction, i.e., intellectual swaraj. The purpose of this inquiry in the philosophy of education is to get clearer about some aspects of self-education which is a form of education that is self-directed by the individual, produced in deliberately conducted experiments and gained through experience. The conceptual aspects of self-education are those which are breaking up the self-educative process into features like choosing, deciding, and doing. It normative aspects are examined with the help of an hypothesis on what self-education ought to be, namely a means and an end following a humanistic line in though and action. The inquiry is undertaken in a Gandhian perspective, i.e., it attempts to demonstrate some principal features of Gandhian though without following their each and every detail. It is at times even a criticism of Gandhian thought and obeys in this the Gandhian desire to examine ruthlessly to arrive at truth About The Author:- Dr. Bernd Pflug is a teacher at Kodaikanal International school, Tamilnadu. About The Book : The book ‘INTRODUCTION TO DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY: Genetic Foundations and Prenatal Development’is the first edition in author’s attempt to prepare a comprehensive text on chronological portrayal of life-span development. The book is divided into six chapters and encompasses an extensive introduction to the field of developmental psychology, its concept, nature, scope, issues, goals, and historical background. It provides a lucid and simple description of the major theories, and methods of studying human development. The representation of human development starting from conception throughout prenatal development to birth process has been made in an orderly sequence. The parts of the childs development which are formally planned came to seem important to those who plan and administer the schools, while the parts which are left to informal contacts are overlooked as of small importance, or are forgotten. Yet they continue to be very important, perhaps more important than all the matter included in formal education. Rural education, like all education, should not limit itself to the processes of the schoolroom, but at every stage from primary school to university should insist that pupils and students shall learn also from the great traditions of common life. The present work contains valuable relevant matter on diverse aspects of rural education. Students, teachers, educationists and educational administrators besides policy planners and teacher-trainers will find this book most useful and informative.
