196567155Atlanta: Southern Christian Leadership Conference 1965. Original mock up for a personnel sign up sheet for SCOPE volunteers consisting of two manuscript sheets in an unknown hand along with four repurposed Morehouse college student personnel sheets with holographic additions and revisions all combined to compose a thorough volunteer information packet for SCOPE volunteers looking to be sent around the Deep South to work volunteer voter drives. The Summer Community Organization and Political Education Project of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference was a voter registration civil rights initiative conducted from 1965 to 1966 in 120 counties in six southern states.

Officially announced by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at a speech in 1965 at UCLA the project started with a plan to recruit up to 2000 students from all across the US but fell short of this goal mostly due to fear of violent retribution many volunteers possibly faced.

The project officially kicked off with an orientation in June of 1965 at Morris brown College in Atlanta ad afterwards volunteers tested and reported violations of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act in counties throughout the South.

SCOPE volunteers were subject to violence tear-gassing harassment and threats with guns on numerous occasions according to "incident reports" from the project's administrative records.

On June 18 1965 in Camden Alabama for example 18 SCOPE workers were arrested in a church for "illegal possession of boycott materials." One SCOPE worker Mike Farley was beaten in jail by a white prisoner who was reportedly both bribed and threatened by a jailer to attack Farley. On July 8 in Wilcox County Alabama three cars carrying SCOPE workers were shot at by white men after police stopped SCOPE workers and spoke with white men. On July 15 in Chatham County Georgia SCOPE worker Shirley Savaris was threatened by a white man with a gun and told to leave town. The next day in Taliaferro County Georgia SCOPE workers were threatened by a deputy sheriff and county attorney with beatings and killings "if they did not leave town the next day." Also in Taliaferro County on July 23 SCOPE volunteer Richard Copeland was beaten by two whites on the courthouse steps in Crawfordsville the county seat. On July 28 in Sussex County Virginia two SCOPE workers Gary Imsland and Elke Wiedenroth were run off the road while returning from a church meeting and threatened by a white man armed with a shotgun. In Luverne Alabama on August 3 SCOPE workers Dunbar Reed Bruce Hartford and Carol Richardson along with a number of local students were attacked and beaten by a white mob after they integrated a local cafe. On August 18 in Berkeley County South Carolina two SCOPE volunteers were beaten after attempting to integrate restaurants in Monk's Corner. The local SCOPE office and volunteer residence was shot up the following day. [Southern Christian Leadership Conference] unknown

A rare first edition. "Thomas Story Kirkbride July 31 1809 December 16 1883 was a physician advocate for the mentally ill and founder of the Association of Medical Superintendents of American Institutions for the Insane AMSAII a precursor to the American Psychiatric Association. In 1840 Kirkbride became superintendent of the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane. In 1844 Kirkbride helped to found AMSAII becoming secretary and treasurer and subsequently its president from 1862 to 1870. Kirkbride pioneered what would be known as the Kirkbride Plan to improve medical care for the insane as a standardization for buildings that housed the patients. Kirkbride's influential work On the Construction Organization and General Arrangements of Hospitals for the Insane with Some Remarks on Insanity and Its Treatment was published in 1854 and again in 1880. Kirkbride's ideas brought about mixed feelings in both patients and peers. Some in the medical community saw his theories and ideas as stubbornly clinging to ideals that hindered medical progress while others supported his ideas and saw them change the treatment philosophy for the mentally insane. In his patients he sometimes inspired fear and anger even to the point that one attempted to murder him but he also believed that the mentally ill could be treated and possibly cured and in fact Kirkbride after the death of his first wife married a former patient. Kirkbride was an advocate of building hospitals for the mentally ill in a style which he believed promoted recovery and healing. This style was used on many late 19th century hospitals including St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington D.C. Many of these buildings designed by leading architects of the time are in ruins or decay. An estate now known as "The Village" previously Traverse City State Hospital was saved from destruction and beautifully restored." K073. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. An early effort to teach language through dialogue the book is part cultural history part guide to better health and it is clear evidence of the importance of the study of Italian in Elizabethan and Jacobean England. The seven dialogues cover subjects from health to travel to servants with Italian and English text on facing pages. Many of the dialogues begin with phrases that will be familiar to all beginning language students: greeting others selecting items of clothing asking prices or directions ordering food. As the conversations progress they explore various topics that one might expect to encounter in polite society. An early morning exchange between master and servant evolves into a discussion of the importance of sleep the optimal amount of sleep for good health and the significance of dreams. A dialogue that begins with ordering meals leads to an involved colloquy about the benefits and disadvantages of fasting and abstinence; the virtues and defects of bread butter meat dairy and eggs; diet recommendations for the healthy and the sick; the best diet for each season; and the importance of a walk after dinner. Other dialogues include advice for travellers observations on the political situation and life at court and finally a discussion of that most eternally fascinating topic: love. This work is of continuing interest and value to linguists as it documents the Benevento Italian dialect which is in need of preservation. It's an extraordinarily rare book probably because it was the sort of volume subjected to hard use: in addition to ours we could trace only two copies in ABPC and RBH since 1948. printed by T[homas]. 1918833j0216Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company. Fair. 1918. First Edition. Hardcover. "Shortly after I retired from teaching I picked up Conant's 1959 book-length essay 'The Child the Parent and the State' and was more than a little intrigued to see him mention in passing that the modern schools we attend were the result of a 'revolution' engineered between 1905 and 1950. A revolution He declines to elaborate but does direct the curious and the uniformed to Alexander Inglis's 1918 book 'Principles of Secondary Education' in which 'one saw this revolution through the eyes of a revolutionary.' Inglis 1879-1924 for whom a lecture in education at Harvard is named makes it perfectly clear that compulsory schooling on this continent was intended to be just what it had been for Prussia in the 1820s: a fifth column into the burgeoning democratic movement that threatened to give the peasants and the proletarians a voice at the bargaining table." - John Taylor Gatto. "Gatto 1935-2018 taught school for nearly 30 years and was named New York City's Teacher of the Year in 1989 1990 and 1991. In 1991 he retired saying he no longer wished to 'hurt kids to make a living.' He went on to author books on education including 'Dumbing Us Down' and 'The Underground History of American Education'" - Wikipedia. The Fund was establshed in 1901 as one of the instruments of the World Zionist Organization in implementing its objective - the establishment in Palestine of a Jewish state. The role of the Fund in this enterprise was the acquisition and development of territory for Jewish colonization. 16425Historically Black College. 1923. Photo and Memory Album disbound. Lane College. Jackson Tennessee. Album belonging to 1923 graduate Lessie Belle Spann. 90 pages front and back majority filled on 8"x8" pre-printed My Graduation Journal leaves. A detailed and engaging record of Spann's senior year and graduation including numerous photos of campus and friends along with her own hand-written commentary and pen-and-ink embellishments. Some photos cut and pasted within hand-made decorative motifs. Supplemented by ink dedications from her co-graduates as well as programs and artifacts pasted in from the year's events and photo prints of her professors cut and pasted as well. Early HBCU albums are rare especially with such extensive photo and written documentation.

Lane College was originally founded in 1882 as a high school to make "teachers and preachers" of the newly freed slaves. Its founder was Bishop Isaac Lane one of those newly freed slaves who quickly rose in the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church after Emancipation. His founding makes Lane one of the earliest black-founded and run HBCUs. In 1923 at the time of this album Lane was still living and active in the church and the College President was his son James Franklin Lane who is featured in this album in printed photos and other references. Like most of the early HBCUs founded in the wake of the Civil War Lane's early mission focused on primary and secondary education and shifted to higher education in the early 20th century. In the early 1920s a college education was still a goal out of reach for most African Americans due to widespread discrimination economic inequality and the inherent inequality of opportunity endemic in the "separate but equal" doctrine of the 1896 Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson. Historically black colleges and universities played a huge role in advancing equal education opportunities for African Americans including providing the education of 80% of all black American doctors dentists and Federal judges and leading in awarding black Americans with degrees in life sciences physical sciences mathematics and engineering. This album comes with two large approx. 4"x9" inch panoramic photos of students at work in physics and chemistry laboratories.

The owner of this album Lessie Belle Spann was born one of six children to parents Mary Ellen and John Wilson Spann and grew up in Tennessee near to Lane College. Her father was born in 1865 in reconstruction era Mississippi. As a 1923 graduate Spann gave the graduation Oration and was also the class historian. Spann has pasted at least 72 silver gelatin print photographs into this album many of them cut down to portraits from a larger size as well as numerous printed photos likely cut out of a school yearbook. The album pages are detailed and largely complete. One page is ripped down the middle put present. The entire album has been disbound and presents without boards or binding. Original double-punched holes provide an easy method for rebinding or storage. Rare and early artifact of an HBCU unusually complete. unknown books

This is the second edition of Thou's history published 1604-1608 and the first octavo edition. It was published just after the Folio edition a few months after for the first volumes and almost simultaneously thereafter. The first two octavo volumes corresponding to the first folio volume and printed in 1604 identified here as Pars I and Partis Primae Tomus II is bound in four volumes as is the second volume published in two octavo volumes in 1606 and corresponding to the Folio volume also published in 1606. They are identified as Tomus Secundi Pars Prima and Tomi Secundi Pars altera. The final volume identified as Libri VI is bound in one and published in 1608 the Folio edition was published in 1607-8. Because Thou was editing and changing his systems of identification as he published the books the naming system is a little odd - this final volume follows the third and fourth octavo volumes and not the first two in how it is numbered. 1005pp index; 1013 index; 958 index; 886 index; 501 privilege index. Kinser pages 10-20. Graesse VII 147. Thou's history is one of the great monuments of Renaissance history and in its scientific factual take on events was much more a work of the enlightenment than the counter-reformation. As a result and despite some minor changes from the first edition all of the later books dealing with the wars of religion and other topics ended up on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1609. A 1620 edition collected all of the history and added Thou's Mémoires. Size: Octavo 8vo. 9-volume set complete. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Over 3 kilos.
