16373Civil Rights Movement Four First Edition government reports related to the Civil Rights movement in the United States. The reports cover issues such as the ongoing struggles to desegregate schools problems with voter suppression for African-Americans and the ongoing struggles for equality. Comes with 2 original press photos of the Civil Rights Committee with President Eisenhower in 1959 and photo of new members the following year. This collection documents racial inequality in the 50's and 60"s that the government sought to address.

Two reports on the "Civil Rights Hearings before the Congressional Committee on Civil Rights": the 1959 report details proposed bills to strengthen the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and addresses issues such as Poll Taxes and the violent ways that white segregationists intimidated Black students from integrating such as making threats to bomb schools. The 1963 document includes a statement from President Kennedy that recognizes the progress made yet outlines priorities for Civil Rights legislation in the US including: voting rights and integrated education. "Civil rights USA: Public Schools Southern States 1963 North Carolina" details the barriers that President Kennedy spoke about with many examples of de facto segregationist policies in public schools. Many of these issues were addressed in the monumental Civil Rights Act of 1964 yet the "Hearing Before the United States Commission on Civil Rights" from 1966 includes over 600 pages of testimony regarding the ongoing fight for racial equality in the US with maps charts graphs and photographic illustrations throughout to support various testimony. All in very good condition with original wrappers; some minor soiling and discoloration. unknown books
194098733London Sept. 1 1939-Dec. 31 1939. April 1 1940-July 2 1940. 1940. 1940. Fine. - Folio 17-1/2 inches high by 13-1/2 inches wide. A manuscript scrapbook consisting of 62 leaves 124 pages bound with 2 silver clasps between brown Masonite-like boards. The contents of the scrapbook are for the most part tipped-in articles cartoons and images clipped from newspapers of the period. These are accompanied by the sometime profuse handwritten comments of the scrapbooker. These comments are occasionally personal but mostly historical. The handwritten text begins on September 1st 1939: "At 5:30 this morning Germany started marching into Poland - which means that England & France must & will declare war against Germany." On Sept 2 she comments: "Poor dear Germany. There are so many thousands of people - fine people. To think that they must all go out & fight for some one they hate against some one they like." On September 3 she writes: "Went to church & Mass at 11. Half way thru Mass an officer came in & whispered to some soldiers hearing Mass. They got up & left - On getting home we found that at 11 a.m. England had declared war on Germany." And the next day: "Archie her new husband went off to the office to say goodbye. They were very nice & thank heavens he gets his job back after the war - if any of us are alive. The street corners are painted black white so you can see where you are at night." On September 17th there appears a nasty cartoon featuring Chamberlain roughly translated: This German woman was tortured and murdered by Polish beasts in Bromberg as a result of England's blanket authority. What will Mr. Chamberlain tell you Next to it is pasted an article reporting on Russia's invasion of Poland. A Soviet dispatch reads "The Polish-german war has revealed the rottenness of the Polish State and its Government". A newspaper copy of Hitler's September 19th Danzig speech attempting to justify his invasion of Poland is tipped in. The scrapbooker writes on September 24 of the terrible plight of a friend: ".she is sleeping in an old Warehouse with 35 other girls and the place isn't even water-proof to say nothing of being unheated. Their job is to act either as chauffers to all the officers or else as ambulance drivers." Hitler's October 6 Reichstag speech as published in a newspaper is tipped in. A newspaper article states "RED TERROR COMES TO POLAND. Ninety-Nine per cent of the people of Poland consider the Russian invasion incomparably worse than the German because of its infinitely greater cruelty." On November 5th "Black-out deaths are becoming alarming. Now that it is dark at 6 - just at the rush hour there are a lot of accidents." Articles on Mussolini and on the Graf Spee start appearing. On December 2nd the scrapbooker writes: "USA has threatened to stop selling arms to the Soviet. Oh yeah They'll sell anything in order to make money." And on December 9th: "Because everyone had their pets killed at the beginning of war London is now overrun with rats".
The first part of the scrapbook ends on December 13 1939. She picks up again on April 1st 1940. Here is tipped-in the newspaper printing of Churchill's "Finest Hour' speech of June 18 1940. On June 29 1940 The Times of London prints a large image of the Churchill "Deserve Victory" poster. David Lloyd George's article "France: The Terrible Warning" appears in the "Sunday Pictorial". The scrapbook ends on July 2nd 1940. Superb source material.
The 23-year-old creator of the scrapbook was at the time of her death the widow of U.S. Ambassador Lincoln MacVeagh. Born on September 12 1916 Virginia "Bimbetta" was the daughter of Marchese and Marchesa Agostino Ferrante di Ruffano. Her mother Virginia Cameron MacVeagh came from a line of important American government officials. Her father served as consul general of Italy in several countries. She accompanied her family to the diplomatic postings of her father including Istanbul Boston Ottawa Philadelphia Sydney and finally Dresden in 1938. Bimbetta married Archibald J. Coats in Frankfurt on April 27 1939 and the couple settled in England. Coats was called up by the military in 1939 and fought in the Sudan. Bimbetta left England in 1940 settling in Cazenovia New York. She and Archibald Coats divorced in 1950. In 1952 she moved with her children to Madrid. It was there that her relationship with Lincoln MacVeagh the Ambassador to Spain took root. After MacVeagh's retirement the couple resided in Estoril Portugal and were married there in 1955. On the 4th leaf with the seal the letter is addressed "APRmo 5 Mons : Vescovo di Cremona". The letter realized in a secretarial hand is dated April 5 1562 from Milan and is boldly signed by Francesco Fernando dÁvalos d'Aquino d'Aragona.
Philip II King of Spain and Duke of Milan chose Francesco Fernando dÁvalos to be his envoy at the Council of Trent. He arrived in Trent on March 14 1562 and attended the sessions of the council. He pressed the Spaniards to not offer up anything against the interests of the Holy See. Upon his return to Milan he charged his secretary Ercole Pagnano with the task of generating a report. As the Governor's agent Pagnano had defended the privileges of the Sicilian monarchy and worked with the Spaniards to quell the controversy regarding the jurisdiction of bishops. In this letter to the Bishop of Cremona the Governor is offering Pagnano's report to him. Loosely translated he states that Pagnano is well informed about these things and that "V.S." Your Excellency should be given his account.
The letter was once folded into 4 panels and there very minor breaks along 3 of the folds. There is some minor browning especially to one of the folds.
An advisor to King Philip II of Spain Francesco Fernando dÁvalos c.1530-1571 took command of the Spanish army in Lombardy and Piedmont succeeding the 3rd Duke of Alba who had become the Governor of Milan. He participated in some of the sessions of the Council of Trent from 1561 to 1563. In 1590 he was one of seven cardinals that were acceptable to be pope by Philip II of Spain. He was elected Pope and took the name Gregory XIV. He died less than a year later in October 1591. Milan, 1562. unknown

183063Bergamo: Dalla Stamperia Mazzoleni 1830. 24mo. 130 x 85 mm 5 1/8 x 3 1/4 inches. 32 24 pp. Contemporary red morocco gilt-tooled borders and spine. A lovely copy. First edition. Superb copy of this seemingly unrecorded volume designed to raise funds for the maintenance of girls' schools north of Bergamo near the Swiss border. It is published by the 'Pia opera di Santa Dorotea' an Italian movement founded in 1815 to provide education for female orphans. The volume contains two separately paginated parts each in the form of a letter. The first describes in a cheerful style the work of the schools the directors and assistants all female and the flavor of the education the girls receive; all the girls learn to read and write and educated in virtues of piety and charity. Contrasting the petulance nascent malice and puerile nature of many girls with that of those in the care of the Santa Dorotea schools the author notes that 'the education of these peasant girls is a miracle.' The author describes some of the highlights of the school year including the feast of St. Tecla 'a spectacular event'. At the end of the first part there is an advertisement for the charity's publication Pia opera di Santa Dorotea Bergamo 1830. The second part consists of a dialogue between the author of the first letter and two potential donors to the charity who after more discussion about the administration of the schools agree to make a donation. 18543249N.P 1854. Complete 28 page handwritten manuscript play prompt drawn directly from Julia Corner's 1854 adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. Stitched at spine and holding though some pages are loose or delicate. Occasional staining largely confined to margins or rear blanks. Composed in one woman's hand in ink throughout with what appears to be a much younger girl's annotation in pencil to the final pages. The text throughout corresponds with Corner's book with the exception of stage directions occasionally being abbreviated or simplified. We have been unable to locate the "Miss Lacy's School" mentioned in the younger girl's note.

Julia Corner the daughter of a printer became a prolific children's author in her time; and her adaptation of Beauty and the Beast was hailed for "creating quite a sensation among all the middling-size children" according to Eliza Cook's Journal from that year. At a time when there was debate about the morality of performance and theater Corner was noted for "wisely sympathizing with child-natures and she declares her belief in the propriety and profit of theatrical amusement among children"; and Eliza Cook's Journal documents instances of girls in particular gravitating toward the play "settling all the characters for all available friends" and performing at home or school Cook Vol 10. Here we see first-hand evidence of this phenomenon: girls in a ladies' school taking on roles and acting them out for classmates. Further research into the school its location and its class of girls would be enlightening -- uncovering for example if there were multiple prompts for girls who could not access Corner's text whether the manuscripts were done as a handwriting exercise in addition to the performance or whether one individual simply copied this play out as a souvenir of the event. The hand used throughout is elegant and well-trained -- seemingly a grown woman whose spelling corresponds with contemporary American rather than British expectations.

The choice of a fairy tale like Beauty and the Beast also deserves study as it promotes particular feminine qualities -- including respect for authority filial affection and self-sacrifice and modesty -- even within the darker setting of fairies sorcery and punishment.

A unique opportunity for research in fields including but not limited to the trans-continental transmission of fairy tales girls' education the history of performance didactic literature and performance in schools gender studies and paleography. unknown books

"Here for the first time are disclosed secrets of the Nazi regime which were only known to two people - Hitler and his friend Hoffmann. For more than twenty years Heinrich Hoffmann was Adolf Hitler's most intimate and trusted friend. They were inseparable from the days when Hitler was an unknown Munich rabble-rouser to the end in the bunkers of Berlin in 1945. Hoffmann was a photographer: one of the world's greatest and probably the most famous of the present era. His position is unique for he not only lived through the most chaotic years in history as the Fuhrer's confidant - but is still alive to tell of them. Based upon personal knowledge rather than rumour and supposition Heinrich Hoffmann's story is one of the social documents of our time." - dust jacket. iv-xiv 15-256 pp. Over one-hundred black and white photos.
