St. Vincent is traditionally shown with wings because he was likened to the angel who flies through the heavens proclaiming the Last Judgment in Revelation 14:6. The figure's left hand is raised with a pointed finger a classic "Vincentian" gesture symbolizing his constant preaching and warning of the coming Judgment "Fear God and give Him honor.". unknown

Adhered to a 19th century laid paper matrix at the corners. During Medici festivals it was common to have a credenza-a massive tiered sideboard displaying hundreds of pieces of silver and gold plate to signal the wealth of the family to visiting dignitaries. These objects are piled together in a "horror vacui" style filling all available space which suggests that they are either meant to be seen as a pile of "spoils" or riches on a parade float. This image may also be a pattern sheet for an engraver. unknown

Adhered to a 19th century laid paper matrix at the corners. On the verso is a similar decorative design in brown ink. This work is a classic example of an "apparato" design. In the 16th and 17th centuries artists were frequently commissioned to design ephemeral architecture and "festival machines" for royal entries weddings or religious processions. These festival machines were often made of temporary materials like wood plaster and gilded papier-mâché to be used once during a city-wide celebration and then dismantled. This second edition is published in an edition limited to one thousand copies worldwide and numbered 1-700 in the English edition and 1-300 in the German of which this is copy number 155 of the English edition.<br /> <br /> Glasgow's reputation in architecture and the decorative arts was in full bloom in the late 1890s. Scottish architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh 1868-1928 is regarded as the father of Glasgow style. 1850CAT0126Manual Labor School Shawnee Nation Johnson County Kansas 1850. nk on wove paper: 9 ¾ x 7-3/16 in.; strong creases where folded two small closed tears starting with scattered pinholes to creases. Very Good. The document lists the names and ages of four Creek boys and where letters to their parents are to be sent within the Indian Territory: two to Creek Agency and two to Little River Mission. Verso is written "Post Office for Indian Boys"; it is signed by or possibly addressed to Reverend Edward T. Peery superintendent of the Methodist Shawnee Manual Labor School from late 1844 to around 1850. The boys were presumably students at the school which taught religion basic academic subjects and manual labor farming "mechanics" sewing etc. to Native American children from 1839-1862. <br /> <br /> The school was founded by Reverend Thomas Johnson who supported slavery and used slaves at the school. The school briefly served as the second capital of Kansas Territory when the pro-slavery "Bogus Laws" were enacted in 1855. Superin-tendent reports claimed that the children were enrolled willingly by nearby tribes and that each day the student's time was divided equally between instruction and work. Recent scholarship has focused on the darker realities at the school which was supported by the US government as part of efforts to "civilize" tribes relocating after the Indian Removal Act 1830. <br /> <br /> One boy's father is listed as Robert Buckham at Little River in Creek Nation. Buckham's letters from Indian Territory 1841-1844 are held by Cornell University library in their Native American Collection; the finding aid states that he and his wife were unable to have children and planned to adopt "orphans." <br /> <br /> See also Martha B. Peter Piening 1908-1977 was a German-born Danish commercial artist and graphic designer educated at the Bauhaus and University of Berlin. After two years in Paris working for "Vogue" he emigrated to the United States in 1934 to work for Conde-Nast's New York office. In the late 30s he was art director for "Life" magazine and in the 40s was art director of "Fortune" magazine. He designed many memorable covers for "Fortune." This portfolio presents ". . . a series of 14 lithographs representing the various academic divisions in the 1965 annual report of research at Syracuse University. 1965 was Piening's seventh year as Professor in the School of Art in Syracuse University. He was also director of the Syracuse University Design Center. Signed and numbered on verso of front cover; each print also signed and numbered by the artist. #7 of 75 copies. The book begins with a title page cutout of a dragon dance followed by seven double page depictions of the following Chinese traditional legends in order: The Herd Boy and the Weaving Maiden; How Molo Stole the Lovely Rose-Red; The Lady of the Moon; Politeness Pays; The Spirit Bird; Sky O'Dawn; The Theft of the Dragon Pearl. The book is composed of alternate leaves of heavy cream card and translucent glassine tissue. Each legend is depicted with an intricate black paper cut-out illustration mounted on the recto of the card page and an accompanying detailed description of the legend printed on the verso of the previous glassine leaf. A loose tissue insert explains the history and process of the art of Chinese cut-outs and credits the work to the Self-Help Department Women's Bible School Presbyterian Mission.
