21306The Moral Education League 6 York Buildings Adelphi London W.C. Circa 1914. An interesting archive of material relating to a movement whose influence extended beyond the British Empire. In 1906 the MEL had induced the Board of Education to make provision for moral instruction in the education code for England and Wales and two years later the first in a series of International Moral Education Congresses was held at the University of London with Michael Sadler in the chair the sixth and last would take place in Krakow Poland in 1934. The twenty items present here are in good condition lightly aged and worn. They all appears to have been sent by the MEL in 1914 to member W. R. Macpherson of 17 King Charles Road Surbiton Surrey formerly of Chancery Lane and includes One a TLS to him from the MEL Secretary Alexander Farquharson 1864-1951 with Two receipt for his subscription of five shillings signed by G. M. Watkinson. The three largest items are 4to bifoliates: Three to Five 'A Graduated Syllabus of Moral and Civic Instruction for Elementary Schools. Adopted with slight modifications by the Cheshire Buckinghamshire Devonshire Surrey West Riding of Yorkshire and other Education Authorities. First issued 1902. Revised December 1905.' 3pp ads the syllabus covering the two centre pages for children from infants under seven years to those of fourteen years; 'Moral Instruction. Replies to some objections' 4pp lengthy replies to six objections in small print; 'Moral Instruction. What It Is Not and What It Is.' 3pp ads Six Smaller 4to bifoliate titled 'Moral Instruction. Also included are Eighteen to Twenty three related items not published by the MEL being brochures advertising new publications possibly enclosed with MEL documents: 'Minimum Rates in the Chain-making Industry' by R. H. Tawney; 'The Ethical Movement Its Principles and Aims' edited by H. J. Bridges; 'Historical Materialism and the Economics of Karl Marx' by Benedetto Croce. Educated at Eton and Christ Church Oxford he practiced as a barrister on the Oxford circuit for some years before turning to history. His major works were View of the State of Europe during the Middle Ages 1818 The Constitutional History of England 1827 and Introduction to the Literature of Europe in the Fifteenth Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries 1837. Although he took no part in politics himself he was well acquainted with the band of authors and politicians who led the Whig party. In an 1828 review of Constitutional History Robert Southey claimed that the work was biased in favor of the Whigs. Il liber consolationis et consili è un trattato morale sul tema del perdono, inteso non solo come alta virtù umana e cristiana, ma come necessaria dote civile, in una società che sta mutando i suoi orizzonti e che proprio per questo richiede comportamenti ispirati a moderazione. In tempi recenti, l'opera è diventata oggetto di analisi da parte degli storici dell'economia, che hanno individuato in Albertano il pioniere di un nuovo approccio alla questione del progresso individuale e collettivo, fondato sul riconoscimento della liceità della ricchezza, purché ottenuta grazie al lavoro onesto e nell'osservanza del principio evangelico di solidarietà verso i poveri. Il Liber consolationis aveva riscosso subito un notevole successo, perdurato a tutto il XV secolo, e anche dopo. Innumerevoli le edizioni, gli adattamenti, le traduzioni in varie lingue: oltre che più volte nel volgare italiano, in francese, olandese, spagnolo, catalano, tedesco, ceco. Da una versione di Renaud de Louens, il Livre de Mélibée et de Dame Prudence, Geoffrey Chaucer ricavò uno dei suoi Racconti di Canterbury, ossia The Tale of Melibee (Il Racconto di Melibeo). L'illustre dantista Santino Caramella ha ipotizzato che l'opera abbia esercitato un influsso sulla Divina Commedia.

Solida legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida, titolo ms. al dorso, tagli spruzzati di rosso. Assai coinvolto nella vita politica austriaca, in alcuni scritti il Comazzi (1654-1711) tenta di giungere ad una visione superiore dell'"homo politicus", la cui fisionomia morale deve essere inattaccabile e limpida. "Né il governo solo politica, nè il governo solo Religione quadrano con la pubblica e privata felicità degli uomini, convien tenerli ad un Governo che sia misto di Politica e di Religione ... l'una e l'altra convengono in un medesimo fine, di rendere l'uomo intieramente contento...". L'autore nella prefazione spiega che la Politica e la Religione sono, entrambe, in parte scienza e in parte virtù, e che entrambe hanno il medesimo fine, ovvero la felicità dell'uomo: nella vita mortale l'una e in quella eterna l'altra: "Sono queste le due pupille dell'umana repubblica con le quali veglia sempre il nostro governo, e non è vero che l'occhio della religione resti accecato dalla fede poiché siccome il vedere della scienza umana è una fede in noi stessi, così il credere della religione è un sapere del maestro, il quale vede per noi, ed è tanto più oculato, quanto è più chiara la dottrina di chi l'insegna, di quella di chi impara...". Curiosa edizione stampata a Trento di opera che commenta i fatti del Vangelo dandone una lettura di filosofia morale e politica. Ottimo esemplare.. .
