2007001993Golden Books 2007. Pictorial heart shaped book is about 8 x 8 inches. There are two cut-outs on the front cover. A small red satin heart peeks through a heart-shaped cut out and the sound element is set in a round cut out. The words "PRESS FOR KISSES" are on the sound button. Throughout the book as part of the story are different touch and feel elements: a satin curtain a furry pig kitten bear and a soft blanket. The book is very good condition except for two pages that are creased near the inside seam. The satin curtain is slightly wrinkled at the top and there is light wear to covers. We fully test our electronic books. The sound element made just one sound - what we believe to be the sound of a bunny kiss. The sound no longer works. The batteries are imbedded inside the book and are not conventionally replaceable unlike a battery compartment you can open. While we are aware of instructions online on how to slice the book open and replace the batteries that is not something we do. Very Good/Very Good. 472 p. ; 25 cm ; ISBN: 0671220624; 9780671220624 LCCN: 75-12705 ; LC: HV6558; Dewey: 364.1/53; NLM: HV 6558 B885a 1975 ; OCLC: 1324585 ; brown cloth with dustjacket ; "The most comrpehensive study of rape ever offered to the public. It forces readers to take a fresh look at their own attitudes toward this devastating crime." --Newsweek ; The feminist book par excellence by one of the Movement's leading theoreticians about the crime only males can commit--rape. From a feudal lord's "first night" privileges with his female serfs to a Southern plantation owner's easy access to his slaves from ancient Troy to Vietnamese hamlets everywhere soldiers have marched into conquered lands the strong and the rich have systematically oppressed the weak and the poor preferably but not always those of other races creeds or nationalities usually women but also slightly built young men in prisons. Brownmiller shows how rape has its genesis in power and the need to preserve the appearance of power rather than eroticism. It is as much a function of the strange byways of male dominance and bonding as it is an expression of contempt for the female victim: early Babylonian law was concerned with the loss of the bride price associated with the marriage of an "unspoiled" virgin; rape was avenged not by punishing the rapist but by violating his wife in turn. And on up through the present where the author demolishes many of the convenient male myths concerning the crime by using law enforcement statistics from a variety of locales.; Contents: A personal statement -- The mass psychology of rape -- The beginning was the law -- War: World War I World War II Bangladesh Vietnam -- Riots pogroms and revolutions: THe American Revolution Pogroms The Mormon persecutions Mob violence against blacks-the KKK Mob violence against whites-The Congo -- Two studies in American history: Indians Slavery The Cliometricians -- The police-blotter rapist: Pairs groups and gangs Gratuitous acts extravagent defilements rape-murder -- A question of race -- Power: institution and authority: Prison rape the homosexual experience Police rape The sexual abuse of children -- The myth of the heroic rapist -- Victims: the setting: the conscious rape fantasy -- The beautiful victim -- Blonde ex-showgirl slain in hotel suite -- Confessions: he made me do it -- Victims: the crime -- Women fight back. ; VG/VG

New York : Simon and Schuster, 1975 hardcover
