A particularly sturdy and good-looking lot of four 4 Wilhelm Pinder volumes of German art history focused mostly on the Middle Ages of German history. Likely reprints of prior editions one being a stated Second Edition. Part of a larger set of Hans F. Menck-published tomes devoted to the works and lives of German artists such as Gerhard Fricke Hans Mersmann Wilhelm Grensmann and this Wilhelm Pinder 25 June 1878 - 03 May 1947 born in Kassel Hesse Germany. Each volume bound handsomely in black cloth over boards sharp and distinct gilt lettering to front covers and spines over burgundy labels light rubbing to gilt rulings there. Light wear and tear to each volume a scattered penned inscription a tipped-in bookplate else remarkably bright and clean. The set of four is comprised of the following: Vom Vesen und der Werden Deutscher Formen Band 1: Die Kunst der Deutschen Kaiserzeit bis zum Ende der staufischen Klassik 1937 4 5-177 pp. and with index and several score black-and-white photographic reproductions; text being a bit toned and very lightly soiled at outset dissipating. Band 2: Die Kunst der Ersten Burgerzeit bus zur Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts 1940 Second Edition 8 9-382 pp. and with many score black-and-white photographic reproductions. Band 3: die Deutsch Kunst der Durerzeit 1940 frontis matter 10-399 pp. and with many many score black-and-white photographic reproductions each bright and sharp. Band 4: Holbein der Jungere und das ende der altdeutschen kunst 1951 9 10-101 pp. then extensive unpaginated index of paintings and other illustrations each being captioned then followed by extensive range of sharp and distinct black-and-white photographic reproductions each and every being printed on high-gloss paper. His entry in the Dictionary of Art Historians notes that this leading German Medievalist art historian was a "proponent of the 'generational' idea of art." He attended courses at both the universities of Berlin and Munich before beginning in 1896 to study "under August Schmarsow under whom he wrote a dissertation in art history in 1903." In the lead up to W.W.I.I. and in context of the Nazi seizure of power the author's strong nationalism and pro-German take on art history led to his being praised by the Nazi party. He denounced a Jewish colleague and rapidly ascended to the Chair at the University of Berlin in 1935 though two of his assistants Ernst Michalski and Ernst Strauss "both Jewish were dismissed because of the Nuremberg law forbidding Jews to teach." The entry continues to note that Pinder enabled the Third Reich authorities to in art-looting. He was later imprisoned by the British at the close of the war was "eventually released" and died of a heart attack. He is credited with supervising the Ph.D. dissertations of "some of the most prominent art historians of the next generations including Ernst Kitzinger Nikolaus Bernard Leon Pevsner Hermann Theodor Beenken Hans Gerhard Evers Wolfgang Herrmann Elizabeth Gilmore Holt Hans Vogel Florentine Mütherich Bernhard Degenhart Edith Hoffmann Josef Adolf Schmoll genannt Eisenwerth and von Simson" Dictionary of Art Historians.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
