With the final errata leaf; corner off the edge of pp. 119-120 costing the page number and two letters of a sidenote tiny wormhole two lines from the bottom from p. 185 sig. Bb to the end with loss of an occasional letter but all text readable title-leaf a bit dusty and shaved at the fore-edge just touching a single letter in two lines. Much nicer than it sounds in early possibly contemporary and Continental mottled calf; rebacked preserving the original gilt spine. Early signature "Susan Wats" on the blank verso of the title and another probably contemporary signature "Mr. Thomas Browning" on the blank verso of the errata leaf preceding three pages of notes in what may be the same hand. The notes begin "The following Remarkable Story I took out of a Book called the Politician’s Catechisme page 83. . ." First and only edition of these selections from Bede’s Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum the original of which was written in Bede’s later life sometime before 731; the editor and translator for this edition "H.B." is usually identified as Henry Harcourt alias Beaumont of the Society of Jesus. Harcourt’s purpose was to show that in the England of Bede’s time the "old religion" was "still uncorruptedly practised." Wing Short-Title Catalogue 1641-1700 B1659; Clancy English Catholic Books 86. In it he discusses the causes ramifications and potential justification of the Holy War. Fuller was critical of the Papal motives and results of endeavor. The second work is a utopian discourse on what constitutes the best state. It describes the holy state as existing in the family and in public life gives rules of conduct model "characters" for the various professions and profane biographies. He outlines the characteristics of "the good husband" "the good servant" and "the good widow" and perhaps more interestingly biographies of profane people. Printed and hand-colored in France for the Humoristic Publishing Company of Kansas City Missouri by Jean-Charles Perrin's Imagerie d'Epinal printing house founded in 1796. The earliest printed comic strips in the US it predates 'The Yellow Kid' which made its first appearance on February 16 1896 in the Hearst New York American they presage the format used by Hal Foster in his Prince Valiant strips by some fifty years and are the forefunners of the modern-day comic book. In a green cloth box. A few leaves have been repaired and there is the slightest fraying to the edges of a few leaves. Extremely difficult to find a complete set. The work depicts the daily activities of a young child named Jean games walks gymnastics meals bedtime stories etc. at the beginning of the 1920s. Some scenes are "captioned" with the boy's babbling.</p><p><br />Despite some small tears on the spine of the cover <strong>this manuscript in a marked Art Deco style has retained all its freshness and has very vivid colors.</strong></p> no editor (manuscript)
