With the final errata leaf; corner off the edge of pp. 119-120 costing the page number and two letters of a sidenote tiny wormhole two lines from the bottom from p. 185 sig. Bb to the end with loss of an occasional letter but all text readable title-leaf a bit dusty and shaved at the fore-edge just touching a single letter in two lines. Much nicer than it sounds in early possibly contemporary and Continental mottled calf; rebacked preserving the original gilt spine. Early signature "Susan Wats" on the blank verso of the title and another probably contemporary signature "Mr. Thomas Browning" on the blank verso of the errata leaf preceding three pages of notes in what may be the same hand. The notes begin "The following Remarkable Story I took out of a Book called the Politician’s Catechisme page 83. . ." First and only edition of these selections from Bede’s Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum the original of which was written in Bede’s later life sometime before 731; the editor and translator for this edition "H.B." is usually identified as Henry Harcourt alias Beaumont of the Society of Jesus. Harcourt’s purpose was to show that in the England of Bede’s time the "old religion" was "still uncorruptedly practised." Wing Short-Title Catalogue 1641-1700 B1659; Clancy English Catholic Books 86. "The Politicians Catechisme" referred to in this copy’s manuscript note is The Polititians Catechisme for his Instruction in Divine Faith and Morall Honesty also published in Antwerp in 1658 Wing F2181. A popular Victorian literary character was Mr. Verdant Green an Oxford Freshman hero of several books written and illustrated by a Midland vicar Rev. Edward Bradley 1827-1889 under the pen-name of Cuthbert Bede. Bradley had learned wood-engraving from no less than George Cruikshank but as Houfe notes "remained very much the amateur illustrating his own books.and others in a jolly and careless style." He also drew for Punch and "was one of the first illustrators to satirise photography."<br/><br/>This drawing jolly and careless shows two sketches of the hapless freshman unsuccessfully defending a wicket--the drawings appear in more finished wood-engraved form on pages 100-101 of The Adventures of Mr. Verdant Green-- and a more formal portrait done in the year in which The Adventures first appeared thus making it an Oxford literary and cricket item all in one. In it he discusses the causes ramifications and potential justification of the Holy War. Fuller was critical of the Papal motives and results of endeavor. The second work is a utopian discourse on what constitutes the best state. It describes the holy state as existing in the family and in public life gives rules of conduct model "characters" for the various professions and profane biographies. He outlines the characteristics of "the good husband" "the good servant" and "the good widow" and perhaps more interestingly biographies of profane people.
