Sichel vint à Paris en 1832, où il établit la première clinique ophtalmologique rue Jacob. Il introduisit en France l'usage de l'ophtalmoscope, inventé par Helmholtz (1850). Modern binding in grey plain cloth, bookplate Janus Foundation on pastedown, endpaper and frontespice torn and partly detached, paper fragile causing loosening of some pages, owner signature on title, only a fair copy overall. Scarce and classic work on ophthalmology by one of the most prominent British eye surgeon of that time, a series of lectures delivered at the Royal Ophthalmic Hospital Moorfields in June 1847, including a Paper on the Vitreous Humor and also a Few Cases of Ophthalmic DIsease.
Broadside printed on one side only (430 x 260 mm), the text below the title gives a quite extensive description of the forthcoming lectures with the imprint at the foot, lightly browned, with several folds, innner margin with a small closed tear and slightly creased. The announcement of an intended course of lectures by Stevenson to be delivered before a Medical and Scientific audience during several consecutive seasons. "The course will commence with an accurate description and demonstration of every part of the complex structure of the Eye and Ear, which will be illustrated by appropriate anatomical preparations and drawings... Terms of attendance, Three Guineas each course; only one of which will be delivered during the season, beginning early in January. Further particulars may be obtained, by applying to Mr. Stevenson, 105, Great Russell-Street." Formerly in the library of the Birmingham Medical Institute with a couple of their neat library stamps on blank verso.

Bound in modern full light brown morocco, gilt framed boards, gilt lettering and decorations on spine, in excellent condition, previous ownership stamp on upper corner of title page (Ed. Pergens. probably Dr Eduard Pergens, Bruxelles), paper slightly yellowed, overall a very good copy. NB: the seven folding plates present are presumably from the first edition in English (transl. Thorpe and Glickstein, Springfield 1972). pp247-255 (part of the original paper) contain the explanation to the plates. In French. Very rare first publication (paper submitted on 27 Nov 1892) of one of the most important works by Santiago Ramon y Cajal who shared the Nobel prize for physiology or medicine in 1906 with the Italian Camillo Golgi.
