Oblong 8vo 15 x 22.5 cm. 160 black-and-white photographic illustrations all protected by tissue paper guards. First and only edition of a very rare work with photographic illustrations of the Chinese Revolution of 1911 with captions in Chinese and English. It was published specifically for circulation in the West and consists of 14 parts. The present work contains the first 4. However any volume in this series is exceptionally rare as we have not been able to find another copy in sales records of the past 100 years.The Chinese Revolution of 1911 is an important event in Chinese history as it resulted in the establishment of the Republic of China. The Revolution was preceded by decade of revolts since Chinese citizens had already been dissatisfied with the rule of the Qing dynasty 1636-1912 for some time. The Revolution started in October 1911 with the Wuchang Uprising after which similar revolts broke out across the country. The Qing court then initiated negotiations with the revolutionaries. Both parties came to the agreement that the emperor who was just 6-years old had to abdicate in February 1912. Revolutionary statesman Sun Yat-Sen 1866-1925 became the first provisional president.The present work offers an authentic pictorial record of the first revolts. The work contains numerous portraits of important leaders of the Revolution and members of the Qing court grim photographic illustrations of the battlefields in Wuchang now the Wuchang District of Wuhan and Hankow or Hankou and images of the attack on Nanking now Nanjing including the preparations and the aftermath.The binding shows very slight signs of wear the gutters of the front and back endpapers are weakened causing the binding to be wobbly but the boards are still attached. Manuscript title and captions of the pictures in English written in brown ink in a neat 19th-century cursive hand. Photograph album containing 33 albumen prints of buildings important places views and people in Calcutta in the 1870s. The album opens with some architectural photographs including the governor's house the new market the post office St. Paul's cathedral and the high court. Also included are views of roads and streets that are still important today such as Benting Street Chilpore Road Russell Street and Strand Road and 5 albumen prints of the B.Y. Docks. The album also contains views near Kalighat and Barnatore especially of the landscape but also of a Hindu temple. The album concludes with some photographs of people living in Calcutta showing beggars carpenters palki bearers a barber ending the album with a group of Rohillas.The album includes a photograph of the statue of Sir James Outram unveiled in Calcutta on 22 May 1874 an all photographs seem likely to have been made soon after that.Binding a little worn and scuffed endpapers a little dust-soiled some leaves marginally slightly dust-soiled some leaves slightly browned some occasional foxing paper of the last photograph slightly damaged not affecting the image some images a little faded but overall in good condition. 19675899Chicago and New Orleans: September 1967. 21 leaves illustrated with ninety-nine photographs mostly black-and-white but some in color. All ninety-nine images with a printed caption in the margin reading "Sep 67."Square folio. Contemporary red leatherette stamped in gilt on front cover string tied. Minor wear some images loose. Very good. An important photographic record of a notable moment in the interplay between the Civil Rights Movement the Black Power Movement and 1960s white liberalism documenting the 1967 National Conference on New Politics NCNP in Chicago. Simon Hall in his 2003 article in Journal of American Studies entitled "On the Trail of the Panther: Black Power and the 1967 Convention of the National Conference for New Politics" described the event as "one of the most ambitious attempts to forge a broad political alliance of antiwar organizations New Left insurgents and the radical wing of the Civil Rights Movement in 1960s America." The album is captioned on the inside front cover: "The National Conference on New Politics Aug. 31 - Sept. 4 1967 Palmer House Chicago." Seventy-five images document the conference many captioned on the album leaves identifying speakers attendees and settings or providing commentary.<br /> <br /> Chief among the delegates to the conference was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who delivered the keynote address on the first night. The title of the speech was "The Three Evils of Society" which King defined as “the sickness of racism excessive materialism and militarism.†The present album includes five candid shots of King from that night. These include four shots of King at the microphones during his keynote address three with captions that read "There are no communists at this conference" "I am not a member of 60 communist fronts" and "We do not believe in violence but rather civil disobedience on a vaster scale than ever before" respectively. The fourth photograph of King shows him sitting with Ralph Abernathy and Michael Wood this image captioned "Center: Michael Wood of the Nat'l Student Assn who blew the whistle on the CIA."<br /> <br /> In addition to the photographs of Dr. King the album includes dozens of candid shots of conference participants that reads like a who's-who of civil rights and Black Power activists of the moment including members of SCLC SNCC CORE and the Black Panthers. These portraits memorialize the conference participation of Julian Bond Dick Gregory Ralph Abernathy one of which catches him sleeping during King's speech and is humorously captioned "The alert audience of ML King" Hunter Pitts "Jack" O'Dell Floyd McKissick James Foreman Lois Allen Vietnam War protester Private Ronald Lockman and a woman from the "Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party" who appears to be Victoria Jackson Gray Adams.<br /> <br /> The album also pictures white members of the New Left or sympathetic supporters of the civil rights movement such as Dr. Benjamin Spock Dr. Donna Allen Women's Strike for Peace Simon Casady influential California Democrat William Pepper Executive Secretary of NCNP Clark Kissinger National Secretary of the Students for a Democratic Society and Robert Scheer publisher of the radical Ramparts magazine. The album also includes some shots of other unnamed notables and additional attendees views from the main conference floor a display of posters featuring "Heroes of the National Liberation Movement" such as Che Guevara Malcolm X and Stokely Carmichael and book displays by vendors such as the Progressive Labor Party Marxist publisher Lou Diskin CADRE Chicago Area Draft Resistors and the Student Mobilization Committee.<br /> <br /> An additional twenty-four color images picture H. Rap Brown Jamil Abdulla al-Amin and various scenes in New Orleans during Brown's trial for weapons charges in September 1967. Brown was a fiery activist who was that time serving as the fifth chairman of SNCC a post he held from May 1967 to June 1968. Incongruously Brown was a controversial head of SNCC for his constant calls for violent political action and even served a dual role as the head of SNCC and as Minister of Justice for the Black Panther Party in 1968. The first page of images featuring Brown in the present album is captioned: "Rap Brown in New Orleans. Arraigned on carrying a weapon in interstate while under criminal indictment in Maryland for inciting to riot & arson" referring to the riot in Cambridge Maryland earlier that summer. Seventeen of these images show Brown and his lawyers talking to reporters outside the courthouse then continuing to do so as Brown walks down the street and gets into a car. Seven of the images show various street scenes around New Orleans. Brown's trial was going on at the same time as the National Conference in Chicago. As such a handful of the latter images show James Foreman of SNCC who according to the manuscript caption "spoke for H. Rap Brown" at the conference. At the time Foreman was the International Affairs Director for SNCC.<br /> <br /> The conference was an odd combination of white liberals Civil Rights legends and Black Power advocates which according to a contemporary source "brought black militants and much of the white left into occasional dialogue and frequent chaos." A retrospective "This Week in History" piece in the Chicago Sun Times in 2021 set the scene of the conference and detailed Dr. King's keynote speech: "A haven for liberal politicians and supporters the National Conference for New Politics took place over Labor Day weekend in 1967. The Chicago Sun-Times extensively covered the conference where politicos activists and anti-war advocates mixed and mingled to excite their base and prepare for the upcoming election season. The highlight of the convention came on Aug. 31 when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. took to the stage to deliver the keynote address to 4000 people at the Chicago Coliseum. 'The promise of a Great Society has been shipwrecked off the coast of Asia on the dreadful pinnacle of Vietnam' he told conference-goers. The war he said 'has torn up the Geneva agreement seriously impaired the United Nations exacerbated the hatreds between continents and worse still between races: it has frustrated our development at home.If the will of the people continues to be unheeded all men of good will must create a situation in which the 1967-68 elections are made a referendum on the war' he said. 'The American people must have an opportunity to vote into oblivion those who cannot detach themselves from militarism.' King’s speech touched on more than the Vietnam War. He called for a national employment agency noting that capitalism 'was built on the exploitation and suffering of Black slaves and continues to thrive on the exploitation of the poor -- both Black and white -- both here and abroad.' The activist referred to racism as 'that corrosive evil that will bring down the curtain on Western civilization.' King received a standing ovation after his speech. September unknown

Photograph shows some trivial wear to extremities a diagonal crease to upper right corner and faint spidering across center; Very Good. Mild toning to mat board with some scattered foxing and a few faint stains. An outtake from Lyon's 1968 debut The Bikeriders his attempt at recording and glorifying American motorcycle culture. "McHenry Illinois" depicts a member of the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle club of Cicero Illinois mounting his girlfriend in a field of grass and wildflowers. Lyon lived and traveled with the Outlaws between 1963-1967 becoming a member of the club and immersing himself in all aspects of their activities. Now housed in an unusual and very attractive black protective box with Plexi protector the lid held in place by stiff panel decorated with an sepia photograph visible through a port. iv 248 pp. A rare first edition copy in fully original state and in the printer's delicate wrappers the text largely unopened and quite fine but for some very minor spotting or mellowing the wrappers with some soiling and wear but completely original and unsophisticated the spine largely worn. FIRST EDITION. VERY RARE IN THE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS THIS COPY IN FULLY ORIGINAL STATE AND LARGELY UNOPENED. ARGUABLY THE FIRST DEFINITIVE MANUAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY. Marc-Antoine Gaudin's full and complete treatise on the Daguerréotype process was at the time the definitive manual on photography and covered virtually every aspect of making both Daguerréotype and the Calotype developed by Talbot. Includes the preparation of plates and their exposure processing printing on paper procedures for reproducing plates techniques for portraiture etc. etc. Marc-Antoine with his brother Alexis were important early pioneers in the business of photography and were responsible for numerous refinements. He held patents in both optics and chemistry and had one of the first photography shops in Paris. Marc-Antoine engaged in research while Alexis was in charge of commercial affairs. With 65 albumen prints. 29 ll. Late 19th-century photo album with views of New South Wales. The album contains 65 albumen prints of highlights in the region primarily in Sydney and the Blue Mountains. It was bought by the civil engineer Clément van de Velde dates unknown who was born in Belgium and moved to Australia in 1884 where he attempted to set up a sugar-beet industry. He also served as the vice-consul for Belgium. He gifted the album to his friend Cobus in 1885 possibly as a keepsake for a trip they undertook together.At least a third of the photographs show important buildings and other landmarks in Sydney including the Government House the Town Hall the General Post Office the Australian Museum the different colleges of the University of Sydney the Department of Lands building and the public library in Bent Street that has been demolished in 1967. Most of these buildings were relatively new at the time these photographs were taken. Also included are photographs of Hyde park and the Captain Cook monument the Man O'War steps Argyle cut Mrs Macquarie's Chair and the botanic gardens. The other photographs in the album show the towns and nature surrounding Sydney such as the Katoomba Falls the Three Sisters Govetts Leap and Mount Victoria in the Blue Mountains the Zig Zag railway the Fitzroy Falls Fort Denison Broken Bay various views of the Nepean River as well as four portraits of Australian Aboriginals.With a contemporary French inscription on the verso of the first flyleaf "Mon cher Cobus Je prie de vouloir accepter cet album en souvenir de nos bons rapporte. Votre dévote Clément van de Velde. Sydney 10 may 1885.". The binding has been professionally restored the boards are somewhat scratched and dented. The leaves are warped and foxed the lower corners of some of the leaves are torn without affecting the photographs the photographs have somewhat discoloured. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf. Eighty-three smaller-format photographs each around 5 x 7 inches or smaller; seventy-two larger-format photographs each about 8 x 10 inches. Most images with manuscript or printed captions either in the image or on verso often with photographer's studio stamp. Minor to moderate wear occasional minor chipping to margins varying degrees of curling twelve images adhered to album leaves. A voluminous collection of over 150 photographs picturing the people cities landscapes and commercial activity in the Dominican Republic in the early-20th century. The images capture indigenous Dominican peoples street views waterfront views road construction sugar and other plantations various buildings landscapes and so forth. The photos were produced by a few photographers active in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean at the time including the Brown Brothers "Fotografia Manon Santo Domingo" whose embossed blindstamp can be seen in the image area of some image and Palau of Santo Domingo City. Most of the images exhibit some kind of manuscript or typed captions either in the negative or on the verso providing critical identification information for the content and/or settings in the pictures. The images identify street scenes on "Avenida Bolivar" "San Pedro de Macoris" and in various other cities as well as shots of "Teatro Independencia" "Palacio Municipal de Moca" "Hipodromo de Santo Domingo" a "Factoria" in La Romana "Palacio Consistorial" in the capital city of Santo Domingo "Cafe Eden" in Santiago de los Caballeros "The Citadel at Santo Domingo" "An American sugar plantation near San Pedro de Macoris" "Laboratorio de Fitopatologia" several views of old ruins and other commercial scientific educational or religious structures.<br /> <br /> Important Dominican landmarks pictured here include the "God Tree" "where legend says Columbus tied his vessel upon his first visit to the island in 1492 the wishing stone of Queen Anacaona who was executed by Bartolome de las Casas the "Puerta de San Diego" and the lighthouse at Santo Domingo City the Cathedral of Santo Domingo begun in 1504 and completed in 1550 and various sites relating to Columbus's arrival and time on the island. Other shots capture inventories in various warehouses or in agricultural fields of sugar cane tobacco onions or cotton an interior shot of a match factory in Puerto Plata a Ford dealership in Monte Cristi large stores of tobacco in La Vega laborers constructing a railroad track near Puerto Plata the old fort and other structures at Santo Domingo various shots of the Dominican Republic's federal army and military band locals picking coconuts and wild oranges along the Macoris River shots of various street vendors several shots of the "School children of Santo Domino" and more. Most of the commercial scenes feature numerous native Dominicans at work and the street scenes often picture locals as well.<br /> <br /> Though we have handled various groups of photographs featuring Cuba Jamaica Bermuda and other Caribbean locations this is the first collection picturing the Dominican Republic that we have offered and the largest we have encountered in the trade. "Students were taught to print and hand-color their photographs in oil. after 1930 the brothers relocated themselves and their publishing concern to ST. Helena California. The sepia photos in this volume each highlighted by a decorative border and captioned simply in Chinese only are described extensively on facing pages in English. The "northern capital" of the subtitle is Bejing referencing the shift of 1927 when the Republicans moved the seat of government to Nanjing southern capital". It was returned to Bejing in 1937 ending the so-called "Nanjing Decade." This decade roughly corresponds to the period when the White brothers lived in Bejing and photographed a truly beautiful–and now irreparably altered–incarnation of the city that is known today almost solely through old photographs such as theirs." 19065502Houston: Nelson Art Studio 1906. About good. Albumen photograph 9.25 x 7.25 inches on a printed studio mount measuring 14 x 11 inches. Substantial rubbing and soiling to printed mount with some loss of printed text top two corners chipped right corner chip costing a few words of text. Extremities of photograph worn and a bit chipped with some soiling to the image area. Overall a battered but charming survivor. A stunning original photograph of the final five survivors of the crescendo of the Texas Revolution the Battle of San Jacinto on a detailed printed mount which provides important information on the subjects. These five Texian veterans are all identified in the printed caption at the bottom. From left to right they are: William Physick Zuber of Austin John Washington Darling of Taylor Stephen Franklin Sparks of Rockport Levi T. Lawlor or Lawler of Florence and Alfonso or Alphonso Steele of Mexia. Each man's age is listed as well. The latter man Alfonso Steele was the last surviving participant in the battle when he died in 1911. Zuber stretches the Texas flag out from the flag staff while the other four men sit or stand at right facing the camera. One of the veterans sits on the cannon used by Colonel James Fannin at Goliad. The photograph was taken at the final annual meeting of the Texas Veterans Association on April 21 1906 the seventieth anniversary of the battle.<br /> <br /> According to the online Portal to Texas History: "The Texas Veterans Association an organization of those who had served prior to during and immediately after the Texas Revolution held its first convention in Houston on May 13-15 1873 with about seventy-five veterans present. After 1876 the annual meetings held in some seventeen different Texas cities always took place in the week including April 21 San Jacinto Day. The association dissolved in Austin on April 19 1907 during its thirty-fifth annual convention. With its dissolution its work was taken over by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas."<br /> <br /> The present card mount containing the photograph is printed with important information on all four sides though some of the information at the top has been chipped away. We would prefer to know the handful of missing words but we cannot find another example of this photograph on the same mount for comparison. Still the heading of the photograph identifies the subjects as survivors of General Sam Houston's Army from the Battle of San Jacinto fought April 21 1836. The caption in the left margin states that "This Picture Was Taken at Their Last Reunion. They Have Resolved Never to Meet Again Being Too Old to Travel. This Picture Can Be Had for One Dollar. Address V.C Terry Houston Texas General Delivery." A few words in the right margin are obscured but can be easily inferred: "These are the Remnant of General Houston's Army. Five Living Out of Six Hundred and Eighty-Six Who Captured Santa Ana and His Murderers Twenty Miles Below Houston." The last portion of text below the identifying captions at bottom addresses the other Texas war relic in the photograph: "This is Colonel Fannin's Cannon at the Massacre near Goliad where Two Hundred and Eighty Men Were Shot Next Day Two Weeks After the Fall of the Alamo."<br /> <br /> The present photograph is decidedly rare but not completely unknown. The only other version of the image we can locate measures roughly the same size but includes a sixth Texas veteran named Asa Collinsworth Hill who holds the flag staff but was not part of Houston's forces during the Revolution and is affixed to a different printed mount with identifying captions for the veterans but with a simple title reading "Veterans of the Mexican War -- 1836" above two lines of poetry. This other version contains a photo credit and copyright notice from C.A. Major of Goliad who apparently took the original photograph at the reunion.<br /> <br /> The present example pictures only the five surviving veterans of San Jacinto is affixed to a much more verbose printed mount with a blindstamp in the center of the bottom margin credited to Nelson Art Studio in Houston. Curiously Asa Hill may have been removed from the middle of this version of the photograph through photographic development methods. In any case these are the only two versions of this photograph we can find. We locate examples of the six-man version on the simpler mount at the Bee County Historical Commission in Beeville with an image hosted by the University of North Texas's Portal to Texas History the Texas State Library and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library which may own more than one copy. We have been unable to locate any other examples of the present photograph on the same printed mount as seen here. This somehow appropriately-wounded photographic relic featuring the heroes of the Texas Revolution should positively sing to collectors of Texas history. Nelson Art Studio unknown

Mounted on both sides of the leaves in the album. 60 pp. The album contains 15 silver albumen photographs of Melbourne taken mainly from the series C. Rudd's new views of Melbourne 1886-1887 by Charles Rudd 1849-1901. They show Collins Street Melbourne town hall the public library Parliament House the Court of Law Government House and various other buildings and infrastructure as well as botanical gardens such as Fitzroy Gardens. The photographs of Sydney were the work of the renowned Australian photographer Henry King 1855-1923 born in England in 1855 who emigrated to Australia with his family in 1856. He worked as a photographer at J. Hubert Newman's studio in Sydney before opening his own studio in 1880. King gained recognition for his photographic studies of Australian Aboriginal people and his scenic views of Sydney. He died in 1923 leaving behind his wife son and three daughters. His glass negatives were acquired by J.R. Tyrrell after his death and are now held by the Powerhouse Museum. King is one of Australia's most significant early photographers. The album contains seventeen of Kings photographs of the harbour including Farm Cove and the Circular Quay Government House and interior and exterior photographs of the town hall King and George Street the Mutual Life Association Building the General Post Office and the Ferner Botanical Garden. Rural New South Was appears in nine photographs including images of Illawarra National Park the Hawkesbury River and a series of outdoor photographs taken along the coast at Blackwall and dated July 1895.This curious album of 58 photographs from France Egypt and most importantly Australia opens with a section with six photos from Marseille showing street views the city harbour the Avenue du Prado and the castles.The ten photographs from Egypt depict both the cultural highlights of the country such as the Pyramids the Sphinx the Citadel of Cairo and the Palace of Gizeh as well as ordinary Arabian villages and street scenes. They stemmed from the ateliers of the Abdullah brothers of Constantinople. The Abdullah Frères namely Viçen 1820-1902 Hovsep 1830-1908 and Kevork 1839-1918 Abdullahyan were three Ottoman brothers of Armenian heritage who gained international fame as photographers during the late Ottoman Empire. Some evidence suggests that he may have collaborated with the Zangaki Brothers and he may have been the official photographer for the Universal Company of the Suez Canal. Later he worked in partnership with the British-Italian photographer Antonio Beato.With an owners inscription in pencil "a appartenu Alfred Schmid" some photographs are captioned in black ink or pencil detailing the places. With a small label from the bookshop that sold the album: "Papeterie Sauwen-Jehotte" in Antwerp. The edges are somewhat bumped and some browning and foxing throughout. A fine Japanese tourist album in original lacquer binding A magnificent Japanese export album with large hand-coloured albumen prints of Meiji-era Japan offering a vivid representation of people with arresting portraits accompanied by landscapes sites and everyday life; housed in a beautifully decorated binding and housed in an equally impressive custom box. Of particular interest are the images devoted to "types" life and people including a street peddler hauling his cart of goods by Felice Beato a beach scene on Enoshima Island showing fishermen as well as a splendid image of a shoemaker by Shusaburo Usui. Also featured are city scenes showing Main Street in Yokohama by Izawa Shuji and the royal gardens in Tokyo with the 500-year-old wisteria in bloom. Photography arrived in Japan shortly before the 1867 Meiji Restoration which marked the beginnings of a period of dramatic change with westerners and Japanese setting up studios. Although the photographs were aimed at the tourist market they revealed the dress style and nature of the country. The present albumen prints are mainly from the studios of five different photographers: Tamamura K zabur 1856- was a noted Japanese photographer who originally opened his studio in Asakusa before moving to Yokohama where he began commissioned photography of the tea industry. Kozaburo was probably the most successful of Japanese photographers in marketing his work to foreign residents and visitors. Another photographer is Usui Shusaburo fl. 1877-1894 who had a Yokohama-based studio which operated until the mid-1890s. Izawa Shuji was an amateur photographer active in Tokyo during the 1890s who also edited the photographic periodical Shashin-Sowa. Ueno Hikoma 1838-1904 and Felice Beato 1832-1909 were two of the most successful and well-known purveyors of images based in Nagasaki and Yokohama respectively. The album has an ownership inscription in Spanish on the front pastedown of Ramon Concepcion Lozano 1880-1963. Lozano was a Puerto Rican who served as mess attendant in the US Navy. He purchased the album in Tokyo in 1901 and shortly thereafter concluded his career with the USS Uncas a fleet tug in the Caribbean. A typed note on the front free endpaper notes that Lozano had the present wooden display box made in June 1956. The note also written in Spanish lists the bottom as marine plywood; the box sides as mahogany; lid panels as cypress; inlaid panels on the lid as English pine black cypress oak red mahogany black walnut white pine cherry and birds-eye maple. This is a particularly attractive presentation for this highly evocative album. Landscape folio 305 x 393 mm. With 48 hand-coloured albumen prints landscape or portrait 200 x 250mm; 250 x 200mm. 26 featuring human subjects and large colour print of Hirosaki by Kronfeld all mounted recto and verso on thick cream-coloured boards with tissue guards many with captions or glass plate negative numbers in lower margin of image each with small printed number mounted at lower margin. Contemporary gold-flecked black lacquer boards velveteen spine inlay designs of fans on front cover and floral scene on lower cover gilt dentelles gold-flecked endpapers each leaf with alternating blue and red silk tabs attached to the fore-edge all edges gilt. Housed in wooden display box with eight inlaid panels. Minor rubbing and wear to spine small cracks of lacquer edges of boards with neat retouching of colour corners and inner hinges expertly repaired some occasional foxing slight wear or toning of mounts an excellent example with the photographs retaining strong contrast. An album containing 25 albumen prints ca. 20 x 27 cm including 1 double page mounted on thick card leaves many captioned in English. Photographic record of a journey begun in Australia and taken via Aden through the Suez canal and to the Mediterranean and then on to England. While the first image shows the steamship R.M.S. Ormuz in the port of Sydney three images including a double-page spread show the port of Aden in Yemen the famous water tanks and a native of the Southern Arabian region in a studio portrait. The majority of the album is dedicated to Egypt showing Arabs on their camels the Khedive's Ismailia Palace the Suez Canal Port Said and members the local population as well as the famous pyramids. The last few photographs show the final leg of the journey Naples and ultimately Gibraltar. Among the studios identified in the photographs are those of Hippolyte Arnoux and the Zangaki brothers based at Port Said.With a near-contemporary manuscript inscription in blue ink on the verso of the first flyleaf: "Edith Elkington or Elrington Aunt Ediths voyage home - to England about 1889". Foxed throughout slightly water stained but the prints are largely clean and clear some paper repairs in the margins the last flyleaf is lacking the final leaf is nearly detached. unknown

Grey faux-leather photo album with a small white label on the front board: "42 x Israël 1967 23-24-25 Juli". 44 silver gelatin photographs including 2 duplicates and 1 other loosely inserted. 44 photographs in an album with 30 clear plastic inserts. A rare collection of fascinating original photographs capturing the first Western tourists in Israel and Israeli captured territories approximately a month after the Six-Day War in 1967 by Dutch journalist and photographer Bianca Maria Dony. The 44 photos in the album show the passenger ship SS Pegasus soldiers local people in the streets of Jerusalem and other cities an early war monument checkpoints destroyed military vehicles and other remnants of the war. The album is from the archive of the photographer; some of these photographs were sold to and published in national Dutch and international newspapers and magazines while others remained unpublished.Bianca Dony was part of a group of 150 Christian tourists from various European countries who were now - after the Israeli capture of these areas - able to visit the holy places in the old city of Jerusalem Bethlehem and other places that had previously been inaccessible. The tourists in the present photographs were the first of many and Dony took this opportunity to not only document the trip itself but also the general aftermath of the war.With an additional leaf in the inside front pocket of the album containing notes of how many photographs were sold to different newspapers and magazines including 10 to the "Haagsche Courant" written in blue and red ink and in pencil. Added to the first photograph in the album is a newspaper clipping from the "Jerusalem Post" with the headline "Haifa direct to old city for first time" about the first tourists visiting Israel after the Six-Day War. Some of the clear plastic inserts have small round white stickers on them with different abbreviations connecting the photographs to the newspapers and magazines that possibly printed them for example "HC" for Haagsche Courant etc. 3 photographs are loosely inserted and 2 of these are duplicates of other photo's in the album the 2 duplicates contain a blue stamp "foto bianca dony 147 Malakkastraat Den Haag - Tel. 5582540 Giro 303814" and a manuscript caption in red ink on the back. Most other photographs are simply numbered in pencil on the back. This rare collection of 44 historically significant photographs is in very good condition.l Cf. Rebecca L. A four-volume photo album compiled by an unknown British woman who also seems to have taken most of the photographs illustrating travels through Egypt Italy Wales and the Isle of Wight. Although the specific background to the album is unknown a photograph of a woman holding a camera is captioned " snapshotted" suggesting that she was the compiler of the album and probably took most of the photographs herself.The first volume starts in 1906 with several photographs showing the interior and exterior of a "summer house" near the "Pont des Anglais" now called the Evacuation bridge a Cairo neighbourhood containing many riverside villas. The final part of the second volume is devoted to the Tanta fair: Egypt's largest fair which normally attracted half a million visitors. Afterwards the party visited the village of Toukh north of Cairo.The third volume opens in May 1907 with a railway visit to the village of "El-Rico" near Hosh Essa also in the Nile delta but nearer to Alexandria. Photographs depict the travelling party as well as local agriculture another wedding and a visit to the weekly market at Abou El Matamer. The final part of the album shows a visit to the Isle of Wight in August 1908.With two photographs in volume IV Cairo on the Nile torn out. Bindings slightly worn spines damaged and volume III without a spine. A few photographs somewhat worn at the edges and with a few spots but otherwise in very good condition. An album with 58 photographic prints including one tinted varying in size 20.5 x 15.5 to 27.5 x 21.5 cm each on thick paperboard. 58 ll. Album containing 58 photographic prints depicting scenes and sights in Spain and Portugal. Subjects of the prints vary. From the El Escorial the historical residence of the King of Spain to the interior of the cathedral - and former mosque - of Cordoba. The prints also show the exterior and interior of the bullfighting arena in Madrid. 2 of these 3 prints show bullfighting in action. A little more than half of the prints contain captions revealing the location depicted in the photograph such as the scenic views of cities such as Madrid Barcelona and Seville. The subject and/or location of the prints without captions remain unclear but some are very likely sites in Portugal since all of the prints with captions are in Spain.According to the captions the photographs of Seville were taken by E. Beauchy a Spanish photographer from the same city. He photographed the region of Andalusia south Spain at the end of the nineteenth-century. Some prints of Madrid and Barcelona were produced by printers of Spanish graphic art Hauser and Menet in 1896 and 1897.With an Antwerp bookseller's ticket on the front paste-down. The binding shows some minor signs of wear mostly around the spine and corners of the boards. Slight foxing/browning of the outer edges of the paperboard not affecting the photographs some photographs have slightly faded edges which does not interfere with the actual image. Overall in good condition. An album with 58 views of sights in Spain and Portugal. hardcover

HH Sheikh Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifa KCIE CSI 1872-1942 was the King Hakim of Bahrain from 1923 until his death. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s his palace in Al-Sakhir was a centre where both Gulf Sheikhs and British nobility and political figureheads were regularly invited to dine and discuss foreign policy of the region. The photograph shows the monarch in a deck chair on a ship in the company of noble retainers. The caption reads "Sheikh Hamad. Ruler of group of Islands Persian Gulf".A well-preserved glossy print in good contrast. unknown

Printed at Chicago House the field headquarters of the Survey in Luxor. "Unlike other methods of reproduction in which an artificial light source is used on a mass-production basis the glass negatives have been exposed individually to direct sunlight on printing-out-paper resulting in minuscule differences among the prints. Each print was then toned in a gold chloride solution. Great care has been taken to produce prints that would have resembled closely those that one might have purchased while journeying through Egypt in the nineteenth century" p. vi. 1856588299No place - Maryland 1856. Hardcover. Fine. Sixth plate ambrotype portrait. Matted with preserver in original embossed leather case with purple-ish cut velvet pad. Image size approximately 3" x 3½". A couple of faint spots in the background else the image is crisp and fine the case is a bit rubbed but sound very good or better. Image of a seated African-American woman possibly in early middle-age with a white cap and holding a white handkerchief. Subtle and tasteful pink tinting on her cheeks and a ring on one finger has been tinted gold. While the cap suggests that the subject may have been a domestic the tinted gold ring might suggest otherwise. Otherwise unidentified the mat and preserver suggest a date around 1856 provenance suggests that the image was likely taken in Maryland which at the time had a large population of both free and enslaved African-Americans. The 1871 process was calotype 1877 carbon and 1900 a gravure process. The City Improvement Trust was the body which was charged with the task of cleaning up the squalid living conditions that existed in the city in the second half of the nineteenth century. Learning from visits to Paris to see the work of Baron Haussmann the trustees were very successful in adapting the traditional tenement house style to rehouse many thousands of people.
