Some creasing to very edges a little spotting on the rear wrapper and some trace of a fold down the middle but an incredibly good untrimmed copy of a very delicate and rare item.A very important and extremely scarce publication produced shortly after the end of the war to be distributed in Germany by the Americans to show ordinary German people the horrors of the Concentration Camps KZ being an abbreviation of the German Konzentrationslagern. Problems with distribution meant that it was not as widely seen as was intended and its delicate nature along with its challenging subject matter mean that very few survive and it is not known how many were produced. <br>This coverage of Belsen Buchenwald Gardelegen Nordhausen and Ohrduf is seen as one of most important uses of documentary photography in the 20th century and this book together with some later photographs provided important evidence for the Nuremberg trials.Parr & Badger Vol I 194. 21448Very good. Flexible leather binder containing 29 black and white 8" x 10" photographs inserted back-to-back in clear sleeves. Stamped in gilt on the cover with the name of the owner/recipient James Stubbers as well as the Hiram Walker name and logo. Each photo has a typed caption. Fine condition. Hiram Walker & Sons was founded in Windsor Ontario by American entrepreneur Hiram Walker who focused on creating branding and marketing an uncommonly smooth and palatable whisky. His signature product Hiram Walker's Club Whisky proved extremely popular in both Canada and the United States and by 1882 the company was offering 27 varieties of whisky. In 1889 after the U.S. Congress passed legislation requiring the country of origin to be shown on all labels the brand was re-named Canadian Club. Today Hiram Walker is "one of the three largest distilleries in the world exporting products to over 150 countries. Through growth and expansion the company now consists of three Canadian distilleries and four American marketing subsidiaries as well as a bottling facility a glass company and a distillery. It owns 11 Scottish distilling plants and has holdings in France Mexico Argentina and Spain" Source: referenceforbusiness website. This album which dates from about 1950 offers an informative visual tour of the company's operations in Peoria Illinois described in a caption as the "World's largest and most modern beverage distillery" and emphasizes their focus on quality. The photographs show the on-site grain elevator inspection of corn prior to acceptance milling machines pressure cookers "retain desired volatile flavors of the grain" yeast selection process fermentation tanks stills "different stills are used in producing 13 base whiskies" oak barrel assembly and charring process blending tanks filtration pads percolator for creating flavoring extracts research laboratories and more. Several images show a group of sales executives who seem to be taking a tour and in one they are doing taste tests on Canadian Club as well as Hiram Walker vodka gin peppermint schnaaps and creme de cacao. The recipient of this album James Charles Stubbers 1929-2004 worked as a Hiram Walker sales executive before joining his father in Kennedy-Stubbers Distributing a Missouri-based liquor wholesaler that maintained close ties to Hiram Walker & Sons. Stubbers may be one of the executives shown in the album but we have not located a photograph of him for comparison. unknown

Albumen photograph on original mount with Wellsted’s printed royal arms and “By Special Invitation†crest advertising the firm as “Photographers of the Prince & Princess of Wales†with addresses at 3 Paragon St. Hull and Church Lane Nuneaton. Excellent. A scarce provincial English studio portrait of the Fisk Jubilee Singers taken during their early British tours when they visited Hull in 1873 and 1874. A closely related photograph from the same Hull sitting is preserved at Hull Museums; that example includes the troupe’s manager George White along with an unidentified woman. The present image represents a variant from the same series consistent with multiple negatives or slightly altered arrangements made for local sale to concert attendees.<br /> <br /> The photograph aligns with the group’s well-documented appearances in Hull during their first English tour. They arrived on Friday August 1st 1873 and performed that evening at Hope Street Congregational Church where contemporary accounts describe the building as filled to capacity. The concert reportedly raised over fifty pounds with a second performance following on Sunday afternoon. During this same visit the group was heard singing outdoors near King William’s monument bringing their repertoire beyond the church interior and into the civic heart of the town. They returned to Hull on December 5th 1873 this time appearing at Hengler’s Circus a larger public venue. George White the group’s manager later remarked that Hull was a place where they had earned funds “beyond their expenses.â€1 On the Sunday of that December visit seven female members and one male singer accompanied by White attended a gathering of roughly three thousand schoolchildren at the Artillery Barracks where a collection of just over £17 was taken for the Jubilee fund. The following day they visited Wilberforce House at the invitation of merchant Thomas Massam singing in the birthplace room of William Wilberforce and performing both “John Brown’s Body†and “God Save the Queen†linking their American antislavery origins with Britain’s own abolitionist legacy.<br /> <br /> At some point in their visits the group was photographed at the W.J. Wellstead studio with the images likely produced to sell during their performances. STEBBINS: A successful businessman and financier in New York City James Stebbins was known for owning one of the most significant private collections of paintings and sculptures in the late 1800s. In February 1889 his collection was sold at a major auction at Chickering Hall in New York City by the American Art Association. The scale included 80 high-profile works by masters such as Meissonier and Gerome totaling over $160000 -- a massive sum at the time. Subsequently Stebbins published this a "Limited Edition de luxe" catalog of his collection in 1889 which featured etchings of his works by notable artists like Thomas Moran.<br><br>CONDITION: Rebound cover is in stunning lovely condition. Although not indicated this book is from the library of Ms. Huguette Clark's advisor in building historically accurate miniature Japanese houses and temples; with a SIGNED gift note from Ms. Clark the note has been torn and taped. Huguette Marcelle Clark 1906 – 2011 was an American painter heiress philanthropist and the youngest daughter of Montana senator and industrialist William A. Clark who became well known again late in life as a recluse in New York. Ms. Clark collected dolls by the hundreds and had a vast collection of artifacts. She commissioned miniature models of Japanese temples castles teahouses cake shops and other buildings; determined to have the most authentic dollhouses possible the Japanese miniatures were designed and built by artists in Japan. The book is bound in tan silk with gilt lettering to spine and housed in red silk covered slipcase with gilt lettering on cover; both are laid in publisher's cardboard mailing boxed unmarked. A fine copy of a scarce work on Gosho Ningyo. "More than 500 traditional dolls known as 'Gosho Ningyo' palace dolls dating back to the Edo period are preserved at 11 Monzeki convents in Kyoto Nara and Shiga prefectures. 197315508<p>"In September 1973 Fina Torres a photojournalist active in Venezuela at that time was in Santiago during the coup that overthrew the government of the Unidad Popular. She photographed the damage done by the artillery to the facade of the Palacio de la Moneda the armed soldiers in the streets and other unsettling scenes of everyday life at the time: the cleaning of painted slogans from the walls people lining up to buy food the surveillance of the embassies and the anguished seriousness of people waiting outside the morgue. Photographs of similar scenes can be found in the photobook Chili September 1973 by Koen Wessing one of whose images is virtually identical to another taken by Torres. Both photographed a dark-haired girl standing at the door of the nourgue and showing the ID photo of a soldier. Torres decided to repeat the image to show more clearly the features of the young man who had disappeared and Wessing did the same. Ten days after the coup the poet Pablo Neruda died in a clinic in Santiago. Torres photographed the funeral procession which also laid to rest the Unidad Popular and a whole era of leftist aspirations. The procession turned into a demonstration in spite of the menacing presence of numerous armed soldiers. Fina Torres left a testimony of the vigil held around the dead body of Neruda. As she racalls she was "the only photographer in the writer's residence on the day of his death." The house had been entered and sacked by the soldiers an event almost prophesied in the lines "Traitor / generals: / behold my dead house" from España en el Corazon. 20821Two large photograph albums containing more than 400 photographs from a prominent sporting family in Edwardian and Interwar Britain. Members of the family played cricket and polo raised horses participated in fox hunting and steeplechase events and visited the estates of similarly inclined members of their class. Major Pascoe William Grenfell Stuart 1868-1954 had a career on the stage as a singer and actor before becoming secretary to the governor of the Windward Islands and from 1896-1901 aide-de-camp to the governor of Queensland. During World War I he was a major in the Remounts a division of the Royal Army Service Corps that procured horses and mules. He added "French" to his surname in 1917 in order to inherit his maternal uncle's estate at Marino. He and his wife Elizabeth had two children: Margaret Granville Wandooline Stuart 1896-1950 called Wanda married name Wilson and Lt. Col. Robert Fitzroy Hamilton Pascoe Stuart-French 1903-1983. The family originally lived in Woolrich Kent Westcombe House later at the French family home in Marino Cobh Cork County Ireland. The first album begins with the return of Stuart with his wife and daughter from his post in Australia to England including stops in Hong Kong; the Philippines; Japan; Esquimault BC Canada and goes on to document the family's life and interests. Pascoe Stuart-French played cricket his entire life including his years in Australia in England and in County Cork Ireland for teams including Na Shulers MCC Marylebone Cricket Club I Zangari Phoenix and Munster which he captained in 1931 at age 62. Several images show large posed groups of men and women at the Na Shulers matches in 1902 and 1907. Some of these cricket matches were held at the estates of aristocracy including Ballywalter 1902 the home of Lord Dunleath and Carmichael House the Anstruther family home. Affixed to one of the pages is a photograph of the estate and a set of autographs including those of Sylvia Anstruther; Kathleen Heron-Maxwell; Major General Harold A. Tagart and Reginald Gervase Alexander 15th Baron Cobham. The family also apparently bred horses as there are dozens images of individual named horses sometimes with family members and often with notations regarding pedigree when sold and for how much. Some of their horses were polo ponies while others may have been bred and trained for cross country events as Stuart-French his son and other family and friends participated in steeplechase point to point. Foxhunting was another pastime and there are many images of riding to hounds as well as other hunting or shooting events. Together the albums offer excellent documentation of the social and leisure activities of the landed gentry of the period.
