Van Haaften 33. A volume frequently overlooked in the history of the photographically illustrated book. This was the first American use of original photographs of illustrations for a literary work. Heretofore only through various mechanical printing processes could an artist's illustrations be reproduced faithfully primarily etchings and lithographs with almost all original illustrations on paper copied by others onto plates for engravings. Unpaginated aprox 40 leaves. Photographic reproductions of paintings had been included in a number of books but photographs of drawings specific to a particular literary work had not been previously attempted; the hope was a level of reproduction never before achieved. The process was expensive engravings were far cheaper than hand-mounting photographic prints the public yawned and the concept became an idea before its time to be resuscitated several decades later when the technique of photoengraving was perfected enabling publishers to put photographic reproductions of drawings directly onto printing plates. 20563Twenty-seven 27 8†x 10†photographs showcasing high-end vehicles for rent from the Iowa Garage in Pasadana California owned by former race car mechanic Eugene Lajunie b. 1885. Each photo is accompanied by a typed caption giving the model number color some specifications and the price per day to rent with a driver. Vehicles include many touring cars and cabriolets made by Renault Packard and Daimler; a Sunbeam roadster town cars taxis a limousine army trucks a French truck mounted with an anti-aircraft gun and several remarkable “camera cars†made with front or rear-mounted platforms to hold movie cameras and their operators. Rental prices ranged from $35/day for a camera car to $75/day for the Sunbeam Roadster or a 1926 Renault cabriolet. Many of the cars are “posed†in front of beautiful homes on tree-lined Pasadena streets. These photographs would originally have been in a sales catalogue or album and there are remnants of the original pages on which they were mounted on the back of each one. Some have the original typed captions taped to the back others are accompanied by recent copies of those captions. These photographs were acquired as a group from the granddaughter of Eugene Lajunie and we believe the family made the modern captions to replace damaged ones from the original album. The images themselves are all original and in very good condition. Born in France Lajunie emigrated to the United States to work as the personal mechanic of racecar driver George Heath. Heath won first Vanderbilt Cup race with Lajunie at his side in 1904. Lajunie later lived in Davenport Iowa before moving to Pasadena and opening his Iowa Garage on South Fair Oaks avenue. There he personally repaired restored and equipped the vehicles he rented to Hollywood studios. unknown

1870202721870. Early photographs of African Americans produced during the decades following emancipation provide important visual documentation of Black life during the Reconstruction and early Jim Crow eras. Portrait photographs and vernacular images from the late nineteenth century capture African Americans navigating newly won freedoms while confronting the economic and social constraints that defined the post slavery United States. Such photographs often record moments of labor travel and self presentation reflecting both the aspirations and realities of African American life during a period of profound social transformation. This small photographic archive dating from the 1870s through the 1890s preserves rare images of African American men during the generation immediately following the end of slavery.<br /> <br /> Archive of four original photographs including two tintypes and one albumen print measuring approximately 2.25 x 3.25 inches to 4.5 x 6.5 inches. The most visually complex image an albumen photograph dating from the late 1890s depicts a Black man and a young boy standing on railroad tracks behind a caboose where four white men are also present. The African American man wears a hat and carries a large sack across his back while the boy holds a basket filled with produce suggesting a scene connected to travel commerce or railroad labor in the expanding transportation networks of the late nineteenth century. The presence of the caboose and railroad workers situates the photograph within the rapidly developing rail infrastructure that reshaped the American economy during the post Civil War period. The remaining photographs consist of tintype portraits of African American men dressed in the formal attire of the late nineteenth century including bowler hats vests and tailored suits. One sitter is photographed wearing a three piece suit and holding a cane while another poses beside a table while holding his hat in hand.<br /> <br /> Portrait photography played an important role in African American communities during the decades after emancipation as newly freed individuals asserted dignity respectability and personal identity through formal portraiture. At the same time vernacular photographs such as the railroad scene record the economic realities and labor environments in which many African Americans worked during the late nineteenth century. Together these photographs document African American presence within both public labor landscapes and private studio portraiture during a formative period in the history of Black life in the United States. Four original photographs including tintypes and an albumen print measuring approximately 2.25 x 3.25 inches to 4.5 x 6.5 inches. One photograph with clipped corners; otherwise images clear and well preserved. Overall condition very good. unknown

1907233981907. Hardcover. Very good condition. An album of wonderfully composed sharp silver gelatin photographs printed on thick photographic paper of steamboat trips by a very talented amateur photographer. These are all original shots: in all there are 99 b&w photographs laid down in the album usually one but sometimes 2 per page and most of the Hudson River. Each is dated in ink and numbered on the lower edge.<br /> <br /> The photographs were taken in the heyday of the Hudson River steamboats and the photographer does an impressive job of conveying the sense of the grandeur of the river and the joy of viewing the landscape from the deck of a steamer. From the 1880s on no important visitor could claim to have seen America without seeing the Hudson River; the only proper way to see the Hudson River was from the deck of a steamer. <br /> <br /> There are several impressive steamboat on the Hudson images here including the 'Sagamore' no. 57 the 'America' the 'Kingston' the 'Adirondack' and the 'Albany'. In the 1880s the Hudson River Day Line upgraded its fleet adding bigger and faster boats that were also more elegantly appointed. <br /> <br /> The Day Line introduced the 'Albany' pictured in this album in 1880. It had an iron hull measured 300 feet in length could accommodate 1500 passengers and claimed to be one of the fastest steamboats in the world. Cabins and common areas were paneled in polished wood and dining rooms on the main deck were adorned by paintings and sculpture by renowned artists.<br /> <br /> Photographs number 48 to 96 are Lake Champlain and Hudson River views. This includes 7 wonderful shots of the Poughkeepsie Railway Bridge which was completed in 1889 and is now a pedestrian walkway with stunning river views part of the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. The last 3 of these nos. 80 81 & 82 have been made into a folding panorama showing the entire span of the remarkable bridge. Another memorable photograph shows a steamboat passing Break Neck just north of Cold Spring NY. <br /> <br /> Other images include Toronto Canada; Niagara Falls; several images of a visit to a water's edge home called "Great Elms" at Kingston Point; Cedar Island; the fort at Kingston; several images taken among Thousand Islands; Lake George; Burlington Vermont; Lake Champlain; Albany NY; near West Point 89 & 90; Battleships on the Hudson off NY City and near Grant's Tomb New York. <br /> <br /> Tipped on to the front cover is a color printed route map for Lake George and Thousand Island along with a brochure from the Delaware & Hudson Co with a color folding map which extends from Ticonderoga to Lake George. The front cover present with a list of places visited recorded in blue pencil and signed "Ferd. W. Hahn". His rubber stamp on the verso of a few of the images.<br /> <br /> Oblong 8vo 10 1/2 x 7".
