Medium folio; 48x35 cm. In English. 240 p. Colour ills.; 175 full-color plates and plans with drawings. Aphrodisias was a free and autonomous city within the Roman province of Asia in Western Turkey. It was best known for the sanctuary of its patron goddess Aphrodite and for its marble sculptors. The community prospered under the early and middle Roman empire first-second centuries AD when it built a complete set of marble buildings that made the town a proper city in ancient eyes. Aphrodisias sheds valuable light on interaction between Greek and Roman identity the functioning of empire religious conflict and accommodation and transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Aphrodisian sculptors are known to have worked abroad on prestigious commissions for example at Hadrian's villa at Tivoli. The surviving body of sculpture is rich and varied. There are statues of gods heroes emperors benefactors philosophers and athletes as well as mythological groups decorative figures and ornamental and figured relief sculptures. Many of the key pieces occupy key positions in the history of Roman art. The sculpture of the city is a legacy of unrivalled importance in this field. The archaeology of Aphrodisias gives a fuller more vivid picture of later classical art in its ancient context than is possible at any other site.

Note: Exceptionally large book 48x35 cm. and may require additional postage.
Ertuğ & Kocabıyık Publications hardcover

Clean and crisp no inscriptions or flaws. Tiny bit of wear to the dj else in As New condition. A study of fashion photography since 1945 which places it in the mainstream of popular culture. It links fashion to such influential figures as Walker Evans and Robert Frank and its implications transcend purely photographic history. Martin Harrison explores the role of magazine culture and the influences of art directors and editors who have both created and reflected the mood and tones of the post-war decades. With the participation of the greatest figures in the field from Richard Avedon and Irving Penn to Bruce Weber he presents some of the most famous fashion photographs of all time as well as many rare images. The involvement of artists such as Cindy Sherman and Robert Mapplethorpe is also examined whose work is peripheral to the fashion industry yet whose influence pervades the look and climate of the times. The conclusion is that fashion photography is no longer dinstinct from the lineage of art photography and has now become central to an understanding of modern culture and vidual media. 2005363170NY: Fraenkel Gallery/Hasselblad Foundation 2005. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Hardcover 64 1stpages. The master photographer best known for his extensive insightful documentation of "the American social landscape"--from jazz musicians to factory hands to New York pedestrians and office workers zoning out at their keyboards--has recently been spending more time looking at the literal natural landscape. His monumental 2005 MoMA retrospective showed for the first time a new series of landscapes made in the American West while for Olives and Apples he has looked back over the last decade's work and culled a forest tree by tree. His docile subjects apple trees photographed in New York State and olive trees photographed in France Italy and Spain from 1997-2004 are presented in circumstances ranging from sunny leafy summer health to glittering winter ice-storm glory. Some of the most striking compositions are shot from just inside the reach of a tree's furthest twigs so that expanding branching limbs fill the frame stretching out around the viewer. The photograph has small surface abrasions mainly to lower edge and upper right corer. The mount has some dusting and edge wear.

A related photograph exists depicting the Labour Delegation possibly August 1917 though again including J. O'Grady and W. Thorne among the Russian soldiers who had refused to fire upon the people at the onset of the Russian Revolution and is preserved among the papers of Ron Todd in the Warwick Digital Collection.

In February 1917 with Russia exhausted by three years of war a series of strikes and bread riots in Petrograd led to the collapse of autocratic rule and the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II. In Britain the socialist movement greeted the fall of the Romanov dynasty with unanimous enthusiasm but found itself divided on the way forward and on questions of war and peace. Across the country meetings passed resolutions conveying fraternal greetings to the Petrograd Soviet of Workers' and Soldiers' Deputies one of two competing centres of revolutionary power and calling for peace in Europe. Others supported the internationally-recognised Provisional Government and shared its determination to pursue the war with Germany to a victorious conclusion. Several British labour delegations visited Russia and the Soviet Union during the period in question – one in 1917 another in 1920 a third in 1925 and finally the Women's Delegation of 1925. Their composition and objectives varied considerably reflecting the labour politics of their time – for instance the 1917 delegation met with the Provisional Government and urged support for the continuation of the First World War whereas the 1920 delegation against the backdrop of Hands Off Russia was staunchly anti-interventionist.
Not Known
