The cardboard is torn in the lower margin not affecting the photograph. The photograph itself is in very good condition. The large image was likely taken by a photographer who was active in the Middle East in the late 19th-century but is unfortunately unsigned.The edges are somewhat discoloured and the corners are creased from a past mounting method. Archive of material regarding a pair of prospective African American child actors including four black and white photographs of the children four autograph letters signed from a "Madame Fay" variously addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Martin Smith and an unnamed "Mr. Agent" and one typescript letter unsigned but seemingly from one of the Smiths responding to Fay's previous correspondence. Two photographs with the stamp of Adair's Studio at 4105 Central Avenue on the verso. <br /> <br /> Fay's letters which identify the children as twins broadly discuss her hopes of securing acting representation for the twins facilitated by the Smiths who seem to have had some connections within the film industry. The letters also frankly address Fay's financial hardships noting "I don't expect much for myself in the start buy if I only know that I have a Dependance I will feel safer. I don't think I shall ever be able to go into any ones kitchen and the lisence is so high for readings that unless I can't find any other sorce of Deasent living I hardly know what to do" sic all. Fay's note about licenses for readings as well as her distinctive moniker suggests that she also worked as a medium or psychic in addition to having previously worked for the Smiths.<br /> <br /> In her single letter to the unnamed agent Fay reiterates her desperation and states that she previously took the children to noted film and television comedy producer Hal Roach. She goes on to state her preference for the children working with a white agent and avoiding "the Central ave. agents". Central Avenue and 41st Street was the heart of African American life in Los Angeles in the early and mid-20th century a populous region commonly referred to as the "Black belt of the city" home to a rapidly growing African American community as well as numerous Black-owned enterprises. <br /> <br /> As a whole the archive presents an interesting and emotive glimpse into life on the edges of Depression-era Hollywood as well as the numerous difficulties and limitations faced by African Americans in gaining entry into the film industry.<br /> <br /> Photographs approximately 7.5 x 9.75 inches. Archive of 68 vernacular photographs documenting a catastrophic flood in Johnstown Pennsylvania on July 19-20 1977 known colloquially as the "Second Great Flood of Johnstown." <br /> <br /> Annotations in manuscript ink note the name and address of the album's owner a Madaline Hasse as well as the date July 20 1977 and the names of several locations captured in the album-Dale Walnut Grove Solomans Home and Ohio Street. Featured are numerous striking views of water rushing through city streets downed trees and branches accumulated mud and debris and the city's residents presumably driven from their houses witnessing the aftermath. <br /> <br /> In the wake of damage sustained during floods in 1889 and 1936 the US Army Corps of Engineers began working on flood control measures in 1938 and by 1943 the project was declared complete. The channel improvements made during the project were designed to carry 81500 cubic feet per second of water. On the night of July 19 1977 however a deluge of rainfall created a flood discharge of 115000 cubic feet per second causing six dams in Cambria County to fail. <br /> <br /> Eight counties were affected by the flooding resulting in 2700 injuries and 76 deaths. The local economy was also heavily impacted by the flood largely due to the area's biggest employer Bethlehem Steel terminating over 2300 jobs in the years following the disaster. The decline in steel and coal production made a significant dent in city revenue and Johnstown ultimately never recovered its industrial power. <br /> <br /> Photographs approximately 3.5 x 4.5 inches housed in a generic white vinyl spiralbound album measuring 10 x 12 inches. 337<p><strong>LUMIÈRE BROTHERS – COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHY</strong>Archive of 19 letters sent to the Lumière brothers and one offprint of their paper on colour photography. </p><p><strong>An exceptional set of 19 letters expressing the enthusiasm of the scientific community and photographic societies following the production of the first colour photographic prints by the Lumière brothers more than ten years before their invention of the autochrome 1903-1904.</strong></p><p>Louis Lumière achieved this exceptional result by improving Gabriel Lippmann's process which was based on "an interference method that enabled him to record the solar spectrum in its natural colours". Alphonse Berget one of Lippmann's students published a report on his discovery in 1891.</p><p>" Louis Lumière at the head of a flourishing photographic products company mastered every aspect from formulation to the industrial production of plates that could be used to make interferential colour photographs. As soon as Lippmann's invention was announced a correspondence was established between Gabriel Lippmann and Louis Lumière and after a year of fine-tuning Louis Lumière presented the Académie des Sciences with some surprising "Lippmannian" views : flowers oranges landscapes stained-glass windows a naturalised parrot flags etc. A plate depicting the solar spectrum was presented to the Société française de photographie. Any object with shimmering colours could be recorded on a plate as long as it was still : the exposure time could be counted in hours ! . They were reduced to thirty minutes and then to a few minutes and the first portrait of a young girl in "natural colours" was taken in the summer of 1893. Entre art et science les prémices de la photographie couleurs au XIXe siècle</em> Nov. 2015 Paris France.</p><p>Post-1894 letters underline the Lumière brothers' efforts to promote their process. </p><p>The printed pamphlet is the Lumière brothers' last publication on their trichromatic method superposition of three monochromes - red yellow and blue before their discovery of the autochrome. It begins with a theoretical study of this method followed by a practical study of the process.</p><p>Provenance: Dr Paul Génard a great collector of early films and projection devices and leading authority on the Lumière brothers. 1930CAT209New York and Environs 1930. Excellent. We find scant information on Henry Reister a professional photographer operating throughout the New York metropolitan region in the early part of the century. His studio moved several times from the Bronx to Bridgewater New Jersey then to Woodlawn New York. This interesting and varied collection from his estate shows the type of work available to a professional photographer operating in New York during the period - architectural shoots product photography events and some portraiture. The opulent wealth of New York’s upper classes during the 1920s is on display in Reister’s architectural work which makes up a large portion of this collection. The burgeoning commercial age is also shown in his product photographs most notably a series of photographs of Remington typewriters a series of photographs of the newly created New York Telephone Directory two photographs of automobiles and a series of brightly-lit interior grocery store displays.<br /> <br /> Contents as follows:<br /> <br /> Seven images advertising typewriters with five showing a young woman posed with a Remington typewriter; five images of the New York Telephone Directory; five images of brightly lit grocery store interiors most focusing on elaborate lighting on a dairy display; two images of automobiles one showing a man in fine dress posed alongside an automobile the other showing a close-up of a license plate; thirteen varied product images including proto-modernist images of radiators an image of the Cory Smoke Telegraph Indicator three floral still lives and an opulently presented bowl of ice cream; forty-six architectural photographs including a rather stark series of institutional interiors including lavatories extravagant gardens the interiors of a bank on Broadway and high end domestic interiors; six photographs of the Yorkville Social Center Baby Parade of 1916; seven portraits including one of a worker holding two bolts several military portraits and an outdoor portrait of a couple in a garden; Eight scenes from Reister’s personal life most relating to an automobile trip made with his wife in 1930.<br /> <br /> Overall a strong representation of pre-Depression New York with many iconic aspects of the city and its environs represented. Despite his low profile Reister was a proficient professional photographer and the images remain quite attractive and in generally very good to fine condition with a few showing small tears at edges. unknown

Archive of 62 vernacular photographs likely taken by an American GI stationed on a US base in postwar Germany with 57 of those photographs depicting a fascination with Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle cars that borders on obsession.<br /> <br /> At least three different Beetles are depicted in the collection including a myriad of artfully-shot close-up's of body damage interiors badges and cars undergoing repairs. <br /> <br /> Likely shot between 1962 and 1965 as evidenced by the style of license plate found on the cars which was in use for US military vehicles in Germany during that time. The photographer is seen in one photograph in front of a mirror that states "Portrait of a Soldier" one of a handful of non-VW related images that also include images of roadways an office lobby and an Audi.<br /> <br /> Full gallery of images available for viewing on request.<br /> <br /> All photos 5 x 7 inches Very Good plus or better condition.
