As a young woman she was most interested in painting and was a student of Thomas Eakins. After pursuing photography for some 20 plus years she returned to painting in the 1920's. She was known for her pictorialist style. She spent her summers and autumns at the Byrdcliffe colony in Woodstock New York from 1910 to 1925.</p><p>Federico Stallforth 1882-1960 was born in Mexico of German parents. He was involved with his brother in banking and in 1906 he married Anita Risse. With his family in 1912 he fled the revolutionary forces in Mexico and settled in the United States. 1880ABC_487221880. Tipped onto a stiff paper mount ca. 40 x 30 cm. Kept in a clear plastic sleeve. One albumen print ca. 22 x 27.5 cm. Striking large photograph of two Bedouins on horseback carrying large birds of prey for hunting. Bedouins have a long history of falconry as it was difficult for them to catch live prey in the desert otherwise. They typically captured the falcons trained them for a few months then released them back into the wild before breeding season. This tradition no longer exists in this manner as hunting is now forbidden throughout most of the Arabian Peninsula. As such the present photograph offers a unique insight into 19th-century falconry in the Arabian Desert. The edges are somewhat discoloured and the corners are creased from a past mounting method. Otherwise in very good condition. ABE CAT Falconry & Hunting ABE CAT Middle East Arabian Peninsula unknown
18853348N.p. likely Groton SD: October 1885. Very good. Two mounted albumen photographs 5.5 x 8.25 inches on 8-x-10-inch plain cardstock. Small chip to bottom edge of each mount some edge wear dust-soiling and rubbing. A highly-informative pair of original photographs of two different areas of Groton South Dakota just four years after its founding each identified in the lower margin both taken in October 1885 both from a slight elevation and each with numerous manuscript captions in the margins identifying various locations in the images. The first photograph pictures "Central Part of Groton. October 1885." Manuscript captions point to the bank post office "Trinity Church" the Presbyterian Church "Presbyterian Parsonage" and an "X" on the Brunswick Hotel identifying "Will's room formerly at the hotel." The second photograph is titled "Northern Part of Groton Dakota. In Oct. 1885." Among the buildings identified here are "Will's home" "School house" "New College Buildings" "Bank Building" and the location of Main Street. Each photograph pictures many more buildings than are identified through the captions and juxtapose the town's collection of buildings against a wide and empty prairie beyond. Together the photographs provide a rare and early city view of the still-remote city of Groton located in the north-eastern part of South Dakota and numbering just 1380 residents as of the 2020 census. 200375459NY: Aperture 2003. 1st. hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Hardcover in a dust jacket. 80 black and white tritone portraits by Mark. Clean bright copy. Mary Ellen Mark's fascination with twins has inspired a remarkable portrait series. Traveling to Twinsburg Ohio for their annual "Twins Day" festival allowed her to photograph hundreds of twins. In the two consecutive years Mark visited the festival she used a complex set-up for the seemingly simple aesthetic. Every detail is captured through the Polaroid 20x24 camera Mark used. Between the camera and dynamic lighting every wrinkle toned muscle body hair and freckle is visible. Using the studio all attention of the festival is lost. Instead the attention is given to the twins themselves. A thoughtful decision that emphasizes Marks pure interest in her subjects. The final pages of the book are dedicated to bits of conversation Mark collected after shooting the photographs. Each fragment from the conversations revels more about each pair connecting the viewer even more with every photograph. Record # 75459 Aperture hardcover

19566216Waco Tx 1956. Very good. Twenty individual photographs measuring 3.5 x 5 inches or slightly smaller each with accompanying inscribed notecards of roughly the same size. Each photo signed and mostly inscribed. Otherwise minor wear. A bit of discoloration to cards. An intriguing group of twenty signed photographs that depicts a group of Vietnamese servicemen in a training program at the now-defunct James Connally Air Force Base and around Waco Texas during the mid-1950s. The images were previously assembled in a now-perished album and presented to a Master Sergeant Jack Reavis presumably their instructor or guide and his wife "For souvenir of the times that we lived in James Connally AFB" on behalf of "All Vietnamese students." Each photo is signed and dated 1956 and often bears a short commemorative inscription and is also accompanied by a notecard bearing the name of the pictured man in the Roman alphabet and Vietnamese script and usually identifying him as a member of the "1st group" or "2nd group" of engineering mechanics. That they were receiving training in the field of aviation mechanics might also be intuited from the appearance of several of the men with aircraft. Other images including standing portraits near barracks and other bae buildings as well as more casual shots of men with cars horseback riding on the streets of downtown Waco and enjoying a day out at nearby Lake Whitney. We uncovered no additional information concerning this training program and 1956 seems quite early for stateside training of Vietnamese military personnel. The front board of the former album bearing the gift inscription and a notecard with a manuscript map of Vietnam are still with the photographs and other notecards. A very interesting group and quite worthy of further research. unknown
186574829New Bedford MA: C. Taylor & Co. ca. 1865. Twenty thick cards 4 1/2 x 7 inches. Each card bears a poem often of a religious nature with an actual albumen photograph at the top. The photographs generally measure 2 /14 x 2 /12 inches and they are all photographs of famous paintings. One cars with a corner excised some general toning but overall in very good condition. We can find no other copies in institutions. This family-ran company started in 1841 as a stationer and bookstore but soon moved into manufacturing. A leader in art industries Charles Taylor and Co. was a huge concern by the 1880s. They had five buildings 50000 sq. ft. of work space and employed over 300 people. It was was the pioneer in the industry of art manufacturing in this country and was then the largest of its kind the annual product aggregating nearly a half million dollars in value. The firm moved into art photography in 1860 and soon its artotypes and ambrotypes made the company famous. It began with a woman Elizabeth Fry an English member of the Society of Friends. She was one of the first worldwide celebrities due to her numerous appearances on Taber products. The Taber artotypes are relatively easy to find. It is likely these inspirational cards were only produced for a couple of years. In the collection offered here one of the cards is dated 1865 and as they came as a group it seems reasonable to ascribe that year for them all.Louis Prang first introduced fancy holiday cards to America. In 1892 his company merged with Charles Taber & Co. to create the Taber Prang Art Co. C. Taylor & Co. unknown

19136311Gallup N.M.: P. Clinton Bortell 1913. About very good. Panoramic photograph approximately 10 x 48.25 inches. Minor dust soiling and patches of light staining. Two short closed tears at lower edge not affecting image. An attractive panoramic image of the town of Tucumcari in eastern New Mexico taken by professional photographer Pearl Clinton Bortell in 1913. Bortell operated a studio in Gallup on the other side of the state during the 1910s and was mostly known for his photographic postcards of regional Native Americans their villages and activities. This view looks southeast with a large nest of railroad lines in the foreground and Tucumcari Mountain in the background with the scattered buildings and unpaved roads of the small town occupying the midrange. Tucumcari was established as a Rock Island Railroad construction camp known as "Ragtown" in 1901 and only became a permanent settlement with its current moniker in 1908. The town quickly became an important railroad junction and transfer point for Rock Island Railroad and Southern Pacific trains to Los Angeles from which it derived all of its modest prosperity. A good wide-angle image of this formerly significant transit hub in an otherwise rather desolate area of the country. P. Clinton Bortell unknown
