16250This editor and writer edited the hugely popular "Collier's Weekly" 1903-12 and "Harper's Weekly" 1913-16 and became so highly regarded he was named U.S. minister to Denmark in 1919; his books include biographies of American statesman such as George Washington Daniel Webster and Abraham Lincoln. TLS 1p 5½" X 8½" New York NY 1912 April 18. Addressed to George Ade 1866-1944 American humorist and playwright. Near fine. "Are you going to the conventions at Chicago and Baltimore" writes Hapgood on "Collier's" letterhead referring to the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. "If so what would you think of Collier's as a medium for your impressions I am sure McCutcheon or anyone else you might prefer would be glad to work with you. If you will consider this idea at all I should like to know also how much you would charge. I expect to be at both conventions myself and should much enjoy seeing you." The letter is docketed by Ade himself: at the upper left in his large distinctive hand he pencils a huge "A / ans" to note he had replied. Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist John T. McCutcheon was a Purdue University classmate of Ade's and a lifelong pal as well as illustrator of Ade's "Chicago Record" daily feature "Stories of the Streets and of the Town" in the 1890s. Hapgood's solicitation paid off for while Ade apparently did not attend the convention at his then-hometown of Chicago he did attend the Baltimore convention and in the 13 July 1912 issue of "Collier's" his article "The Baltimore Affair from Three Angles" appeared see Dorothy Ritter Russo's "A Bibliography of George Ade" page 232. ALS 3pp lettersheet 4½" X 7¼" n.p. 9 January 1872. Addressed to "Thornton" Thornton Leigh Hunt 1810-73 son of writer Leigh Hunt journalist and first editor of the influential "Daily Telegraph. Near fine. On letterhead bearing the blue-embossed "Privy Council Office" insignia Helps thanks hid friend for "a very pleasant review in the Daily Telegraph Today -- at least very pleasing to the author. There was a good point taken in it -- showing an opinion of mine -- which will be valuable to me hereafter. It was in that part where the critic comments upon my chapters relating to local & imperial government. It is quite true what he says that I should have noticed the new local bodies. 16053The rear admiral who served as commander-in-chief of the North Atlantic Fleet 1901-03 took part in the attack on Fort Sumter saw action aboard the Colorado as part of the Western Gulf Blockading Squadron in 1861-62 and the Judith in Pensacola Harbor and was executive officer on the Housatonic when she was destroyed by a torpedo off Charleston; from 1865-68 he served aboard the Hartford in the Asiatic Squadron. Partly-printed ADS 1p 7½" X 3" Washington DC 1903 July 3. Very good. Check drawn on The Riggs National Bank filled out in Higginson's hand for $25 to John T. Devine and boldly signed. Passport beautifully engraved on the usual thin onion skin paper with ornate crest at top and bottom for a Charles Calvert Corner "British Subject travelling on the Continent." Corner 1812-61 was a noted solicitor from a well-known family of English jurists. Boldly signed with his usual "Malmesbury" at lower right. unknown
15624The biographer of cowboy novelist Eugene Manlove Rhodes and executor of his literary estate this writer authored such titles as "A Bar Cross Liar: Bibliography of Eugene Manlove Rhodes" 1956 "California: The Golden Shore by the Sundown Sea" 1980 and other Western histories -- along with popular Whitman juvenile Westerns such as "Gene Autry and the Golden Ladder Gang" 1950 and "Gene Autry and the Big Valley Grab" 1953. Two ALsS each 1p 8½" X 11" and 7" X 10½" respectively Chico CA 1947 January 10 and February 11. Addressed to Owen Davies. Near fine. Fine content concerning Davies ordering copies of Hutchinson's edition of Rhodes' short story collection "The Little World Waddies" which he had designed and printed for him by the legendary printer/typographer/book designer Carl Hertzog. "We have been swamped with orders" writes Hutchinson "and have fallen far behind due to bindery output; we are filling orders in chronological sequence but have made an exception in your case." As an unrelated aside he comments: "I would judge that you are of Welsh extraction. the most soul-stirring experience I have ever had or expect to have was watching the debarkation of a Welsh regiment at Oran in Algeria when they marched from the quay up the steep sloping hillside into the town singing the 'March of the Men of Harlech'." Davies ordered 52 copies of "The Little World Waddies" by the way -- a book that today generally sells for several hundred dollars. 40727President Franklin D. Roosevelt's trusted Secretary of the Interior 1933-46 an ardent reformer who earned the nickname "Honest Harold"; he also headed the Public Works Administration 1933-39. Signature in bold blue ink on a heavy stock 3½" X 1 3/4" card with "The Secretary of the Interior" printed in ornate large italics at center and "Autograph of" printed quite small near top edge. Near fine. Faintly age toned. On the verso noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 pens note to himself and dates it 21 July 1941: "One of a score sent in through the years." Accompanied by a handsome vintage glossy 8½" X 6½" black and white news agency photograph International News Photos. Very good. Archivally mended 3" tear at left edge but overall attractive. Sepia tone candid closeup head-and-shoulders photograph of Ickes with original mimeographed paper label neatly affixed to verso titles "Secretary of the Interior Ickes Offers Testimony" and dated 19 January 1944. Reads in part: "Picture shows Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes as he left the District Court House. Mr. Ickes testified before the grand jury in the alleged forgery of Harry Hopkins signature to a letter published in the book 'One Man -- Wendell Willkie. unknown

On "United States Senate / Committee on Military Affairs" letterhead Johnson complies with an autograph request signing large and bold in full. Accompanied by a superb original 8½" X 6½" glossy black-and-white news agency photograph a closeup of cigar-chomping Johnson and another conferring. Newsprint text tipped to verso dates the image 9 July 1945 titles it "At Charter Hearing" and describes the scene: "At ratification hearing on the United Nations charter which opened today in Washington Senator Hiram Johnson of Cal. and Senator Tom Connally of Texas." Less than one month later -- on the same day the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima -- Johnson died. unknown

Mild age toning with light inoffensive original folds. "Congressional Record" leaflet containing Lamneck's lengthy speech titled "Preserve Liberty by Protecting the Supreme Court" delivered on the floor of the House on 10 February 1937. On February 5th President Roosevelt unveiled legislation to enlarge the Supreme Court in order to insure support to push through his New Deal measures; the legislation failed. Lamneck gave this address critiquing FDR's measure a few days later. He signs at upper left on the first page bold and large in black ink. Really unusual. unknown

Marvelous sepia-tone full-length pose of a seated Lamont in operatic costume seemingly a Wagnerian role inscribed and signed in black ink enormously across the lower portion "To John Leiser with all / good wishes and best / regards / Very Sincerely / Forrest Lamont. / 1924." Leiser was a well-known Chicago pianist and music instructor. A superb example. unknown

Undated but likely of 1870s or '80s vintage. Accompanied by a superb heavy stock 5¼" X 8" steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait of an older Livermore published by A.D. Worthington & Co. Hartford CT -- likely the frontispiece to her 1889 memoir "My Story of the War: A Woman's Narrative of Four Years Personal Experience as Nurse in the Union Army and in Relief Work at Home in Hospitals Camps and at the Front During the War of the Rebellion." Large full signature. The address is present titled "An Independent Judiciary the Bulwark of the People's Liberties" 8vo wrappers bound along top with black cloth tape 20pp rectos only. Near fine. On the front wrapper the governor pens "With the compli- / ments of / Frank O Lowden" huge and bold in black ink. Subitled "An address delivered by Frank O. Lowden over the Blue Network of the National Broadcasting Company on Wednesday evening April 7 1937" this speech attacks President Roosevelt's 1937 "Judicial Procedures Reform Bill" or "court-packing plan" legislation that would have allowed him to enlarge the court and push through his New Deal initiatives. At this time superior at the Oblatres of St. Charles in London which he founded in 1857 Manning asks a favor: "Will your kindness take me to the London Bridge Station tomorrow -- unless my hour is too late for you. I wish to leave here at 5 o'clock. I hope you are well: & have good news." Quite handsome little piece. unknown
40508This American playwright director and stage manager began as a stage manager then became the "New York World" drama critic which he promptly quit upon the success of his first play "A Flower of Yedda" in 1898; he directed and managed well-known theatres but is remembered for "The Boomerang" 1915 "The New Henrietta" 1913 and "The Hottentot" 1920. AMS 1p 7 3/4" X 8½" n.p. n.y. Very good. Lightly age toned; two file holes at left not affecting text. Full page of bold neatly pencilled text on this cheap lined notebook paper head "WN-59" and beginning: "It is no longer required of the chief or ruler to be a great fighter himself. It is enough for him to see that his fighting men are properly organized and officered. What is especially required of him is intelligence executive ability foresight justice -- wisdom." Not seemingly a working draft page from a drama though further research required as we have not been able to identify the text. In a blank area at upper right Mapes signed boldly in brown ink dating it "March 4 1923." From the collection of Professor Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen requested working draft pages from authors so it's possible this manuscript leaf predates its 1923 date by quite a bit. Also present is Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown

Broadside printing of this most renowned poem signed big and bold at the lower margin "Your friend Edwin Markham: / Staten Island N.Y." Bright and attractive. "Bowed by the weight of centuries he leans / Upon his hoe and gazes on the ground" Markham begins. "The emptiness of ages in his face / And on his back the burden of the world." -- still a powerful and moving piece despite changes in poetry style and diction.
