22599This Canadian-American composer songwriter pianist singer and music educator was a popular vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley figure; Caruso put him "on the map" in 1913 when he recorded O'Hara's song "Your Eyes Have Told Me What I Did Now Know" and in 1914 he enjoyed his biggest hit "Tennessee I Hear You Calling Me"; during World War One his hit "K-K-K-Katy" sold more than one million sheet music copies; he was also an early ethnomusicologist recording and collecting Native American music on wax cylinders -- some of which he later sang himself in early Victor and Edison recordings; in 1945 he was elected president of the Composers-Authors Guild; all told he composed more than 500 popular and patriotic songs. Printed DS 9" X 12" 6pp n.p. 1943 January 25. Very good. Mildest bit of age toning. Sheet music for "I Was the Tree: Sacred Song" with music by O'Hara and lyrics by Daniel S. Twohig published by R.L. Huntinger New York NY in 1937. Across the top of the front cover he inscribes and signs it large and bold in blue fountain pen: "For a great basso William Wahlert / Compliments & best wishes / of the composer. / Geoffrey O'Hare / Jany 25: / 1943." The 6th and last leaf consists of O'Hara and Twohig's song "Soft Were Your Hands Dear Jesus." Interesting unusual piece. unknown

On "Hotel Majestic" letterhead Orloff pens a friend in his large spindly script and broken English. In part: "I was very touched indeed with your telegramm to Wigwam Hall. I was very interested to hear about Judson-Wolfsohn amalgamation! I come with Alan -- who helps me very good in my tour in all country!" Arthur Judson 1881-1975 was an influential music manager and head of what became Columbia Artists Management famed for combining a number of independent managers such as the Wolfsohn Music Bureau into his "Judson Empire." Interestingly George Gershwin composed "An American in Paris" at this same hotel in this same year. unknown

I play on the 1st of Feb. at Calle Gaveaa. Please do come if you are free." A couple of lines written diagonally across text. unknown

22385This German-born engineer manufacturer and businessman a noted strikebreaker was the first general director of the Emergency Fleet Corporation 1917-19 established by Congress to create the U.S. Merchant Marine fleet to aid the Allies in World War One; a U.S. Merchant Marine vessel named after Piez saw active service in the Sicilian occupation and Salerno landings during World War Two. On letterhead of the "Citizens Committee to Enforce the Landis Award" created to combat the building trades' age-old control of construction which kept rents high; the committee's success paved the way for one of the largest building booms in Chicago history Piez solicits support for the committee's cause. In part: ".we face a most critical situation. The determined effort which is being made to rid Chicago of corruption in the building trade must have united support. Rent the largest item in the family budget has advanced while other things have become cheaper. High rents have a depressing effect on the entire citizen body and effect every payroll in Chicago." The 27-year-old brand-new state legislator requests his salary -- and likely his very first since he served in the New York State Assembly only in 1796 and this request comes in February: "The Treasurer of the State of New York willl please to pay. the Sum which shall be certified to be due to me by the Speaker of the House of Assembly for my Services as a Member of that House during the Session of 1796." Hasso was the Swedish-born "next Garbo" who appeared in a number of films in the 1940s; in later years she achieved some success as a writer and composer. On "Chicago Public Library" letterhead Roden sends this meaty letter regarding the CPL getting a booth at the famous Century of Progress Exposition. In part: "Space for commercial exhibits at the Exposition is quoted at $10. per square foot. At this rate the 3000 feet we are asking for would cost $30000. There seems however to be some chance that space for the Library Exhibit may be set aside without cost. Whether or not this proposition will be accepted remains to be seen. If not then what is our next move I estimate that a creditable exhibit would cost anywhere from $5000 to $15000 depending on how much of the equipment furniture books &c. might be arranged for as loans." He asks that a person be hired for this job as "it is both too important and too large a task for a Committee." Boldly signed in blue ink. 21429Although Grover Cleveland had electric lights put on the White House Christmas tree in 1895 it was this 15-year-old Spanish immigrant who in New York in 1917 developed and popularized the modern concept of a string of small lights painted different colors to decorate trees and avoid the fires often caused by Christmas tree candles; his family firm NOMA Electric Company monopolized the industry for a time.
