Near fine. Cordial note to an admirer: "I generally destroy published mss. but I do nothing systematically & a little search has brought this to light. You will find it among the Epitaphs in my book 'The Last Knight. This is the original and I fear illegible draft. I am not an American except by residence." Boldly signed with an initialed postscript. Second the aforementioned draft an AMS 1p 3½" X 8¼" n.p. n.y. Very good. On cheap lightly but evenly age toned stock Maynard pens quite a few lines in his incredibly miniscule script many of his letters are a mere 1/8th" tall many 1/16ths" tall. Titled "Epitaphs" the first example goes "of a philanthropist who after a long & useful life was impartially praised even by those newspapers which he did not own." Some deletions additions and corrections throughout. Signed 1¼" long at the conclusion. Single 3-cent "Labor Day" stamp and 8-cent flag stamp affixed. No decorative cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address. NOT a First Day Cover but a clever admirer had this envelope bearing an appropriate labor-related stamp cancelled in Meany's hometown New York City on his birthday August 16 -- which Meany then signs large and bold in purple fineline on the "sweet spot." Quite nice. Accompanied by a superb and scarce vintage glossy 9" X 7" news agency International News Photos photograph. Very good. Slight bit of edgewear. Candid half-length photograph of Meany standing alongside a smiling President Eisenhower. The original usually-absent mimeographed text printed on cheap acidic paper is still present dated 21 November 1952: "George Meany secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of Labor right shown as he talked with President-elect Eisenhower at the general's Commodore Hotel headquarters today. Shortly after this conference news broke of the death today of William Green longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. 38059This Knight's Cross recipient was a Luftwaffe ace who scored all of his victories on the Western Front -- 54 downed enemy aircraft in more than 250 combat missions. TLS in German heavy stock 8¼" X 5 3/4" Munster Germany 24 September 1997. Addressed to M.K. Schmidt. Near fine. On a correspondence card the right side of which bears a 3½" X 5" reproduction of a well-known WW2-era head-and-shoulders portrait of Meimberg in uniform wearing his Knight's Cross Meimberg writes to an American admirer. Below his portrait on the right side Meimberg signs boldly in blue ink. With original envelope. Though a small format letter accomplished later in life the content is exceptional and being typed alongside a likeness of Meimberg in his prime the presentation is superb. Meimberg offers "reminiscences about a time that lay more than a half century behind us." He mentions musing about fallen comrades offers some serious thoughts about his thinking as group commander of the II Jagdeschwader 53 Pik-As group when he was 27 years old "At the time it was clear to me that the war for Germany was lost. I hoped for a political solution." and remarks how he knows today that war is always the result of failed politics. He bemoans the fate of his generation but is pleased that a war among European nations is unthinkable today and that other peoples might learn from their history. A touching and provocative letter. unknown

Addressed to "My Dear Barker" possibly New York and Sea Beach Railroad official John Barker or politico and future New York representative and governor Benjamin Barker Odell Jr. 1854-1926. Good plus. Strong folds though none weakened; small paper loss at right upper margin slightly affects a couple words and small triangular chip at lower right corner not affecting text. On "New York Lake Erie & Western Railroad Co. / Office of Vice President" letterhead Platt crosses out the printed "New York" and substitutes Jacksonville he boldly pens regrets at "my failure to receive your valued favor of the 2d. inst till today & the consequent delay in return -- I was down in the So part of the State out of reach of the mails." And likely pertaining to future New York politician and then-current Minister to France Levi P. Morton future New York representative and governor and U.S. vice president he remarks: "I am sincerely glad that Mr. Morton does not propose to let his shabby treatment by the Union League Club go unnoticed. His friends ought to take it up and resent it in some marked and earnest way." Morton was a Union League Club member but what their offense against him was is not known. An appealing war-date example of this extraordinary figure's signature with "Maj Genl." penned beneath it and another rather illegible line bpenned beneath that may read "Dec. 23d 1863". Schurz was raised to the rank of major general in March 1863 which would make this possible 1863 date logical. Accompanied by an outstanding 1860s vintage steel-engraved group portrait entitled "Defenders of the Union" along the bottom heavy stock 6" X 9" n.p. n.y. 25860This American artist is often remembered for his friendship with Carl Sandburg which resulted in his striking 1968 U.S. postage stamp; other stamps include his award-winning 1972 "Sidney Lanier" and the 4-stamp 1973 series "Rise of the Spirit of Independence." No doubt refers to his award-winning 4-stamp "Rise of the Spirit of Independence" stamps which had been released the previous month. Accompanied by a stunning 4pp heavy stock 8½" X 11" color leaflet issued in 1953. Near fine. Smith's 1978 centennial "Carl Sandburg" stamp which shows a left-facing Sandburg in profile was based on a charcoal portrait made much earlier showing a right-facing Sandburg published here for the first time in 1953 -- a full quarter century before its stamp appearance! The front cover of this glossy leaflet features this portrait which once open pages 2 and 3 shows on the lefthand side a manuscript fair copy of Sandburg's then-new poem "Names" in his distinctive script dated from Connemara Farm Flat Rock North Carolina 25 December 1952. The righthand side shows the same text beautifully typeset. Rear leaf page 4 indicates "First publication of CARL SANDBURG'S most recent poem" and "Some time ago we asked Mr. Sandburg for permission to print this poem as a keepsake for his seventy-fifth birthday party." Thus this booklet represents the true first appearance of this well-known poem which begins: "There is only one horse on the earth / and his name is All Horses. / There is only one bird in the air / and his name is All Wings. / There is only one fish in the sea / and his name is All fins." Though no publisher is cited on this bibliographically-challenged printed piece the publisher was perhaps Broadcast Music Inc. of New York -- whose president and founder Carl Haverlin was an old friend of Sandburg's and was instrumental in organizing the celebrations honoring his friend's 75th. Sandburg at that time was at the height of his fame and these fetes garnished much press coverage. It's not known how many of these booklets were produced but likely a modest number for private distribution to friends and colleagues. A superb letter and scarce printed keepsake. unknown
