Addressee's pencilled address erased but ever-so-slightly visible. Handsome signature at upper left. Not a first day cover but cancelled in New York on November 21 1946. Accompanied by a superb original black-and-white glossy 1947 news agency photograph International News Photo 8½" X 6½". Original mimeographed newsprint text sheet present and tipped to verso as issued. Titled "Joint Armed Services Committee Hears Warren Austin" this vintage image shows a jovial Austin half-length at center examining a document a legislator at each side. Text reads in part "Warren Austin member of the U.N. Security Council conferred with Senate and House Armed Services Committee members in a close door session and recommended enactment of universal military training legislation." A choice and desireable vintage photograph itself scarce -- and relevant to the autograph item it accompanies. unknown

At the time of writing the letter Polish-born Casimir Lewy 1919-1991 was on the Faculty of Moral Science at Cambridge University 1943-1945. He became a Fellow of Trinity College in 1958 and the Casimir Library at Cambridge University is named after him. Z. Jordan is noted for his books "Karl Marx. Economic Class and Social Revolution" 1971 & "The Evolution of Dialectical Materialism" 1967 and "Philosophy and Ideology. The Development of Philosophy and Marxism-Leninism in Poland since the Second World War." The letter also includes laid-in a receipt from the Victoria League Club Edinburgh dated June 2 194 under the name "Jordan (Cambridge). A.L.S. May 13th, 1944 unknown

Autograph hunting among British high society A fine assemblage of around 250 signatures of the luminaries of the Victorian and Edwardian age including a signed portrait of Ernest Shackleton the signatures of Prime Ministers Arthur Balfour and H. H. Asquith and the writers George Trevelyan John Morley and George Augustus Sala. Most of the signatures are clipped and mounted alongside their letterhead. The rest are tipped-in letters many of which are made out to Samuel Holliday 1846-1912 who worked as a superintendent for the North Eastern Railway for 48 years and consequently encountered many notable travellers - some are letters of thanks for his service. His obituary noted "he was one of the best known figures in railway circles at York and Newcastle and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him either in his official or private capacity" North Mail Newcastle Daily Chronicle 20 August 1912. Other letters are addressed to different people and acquired elsewhere. Where dated the letters range from 1883 to 1916. Also included are loose signed photographic portraits of William Booth Liza Lehmann and Harry Lauder and a signed sketch of Harry Furniss. Provenance: Anon. Sale: Sotheby Parke Bernet & Co. London May 9 1983 Lot 356; sold to Steve Forbes chairman of Forbes Magazine and presidential candidate in the 1996 and 2000 US elections; his book label is loosely inserted. Contemporary half morocco album 283 x 229 mm brown cloth sides silk moiré endpapers cloth inner hinge supports. Together with five loose portraits of which four signed see note. Album rubbed some signatures loose contents a little toned. In very good condition. hardcover
017053Not published. Soft cover. Good. Here is a collection of three author's signatures. They are clipped from letters and have been pasted down on a sheet which measures approx. 22 × 14cm. 1. C. J. Cutcliffe Hyne 1866-1944 a prolific novelist who also wrote under the name Weatherby Chesney. Perhaps his best known work is the fantasy novel The Lost Continent: The Story of Atlantis 1899. 2. Alfred Austin 1835-1913 an English poet who served as Poet Laureate from 1896. 3. H Rider Haggard 1856-1925. This one appears to be rather a rushed signature but featuring the pen strokes common with his autograph. Condition: There is foxing to the sheet and a little to the signatures but they are otherwise in good condition. <br/> <br/> Not published paperback

Handsome glossy pose showing a seated Autry strumming his guitar in ten-gallon hat and typical Western garb inscribed large and bold in black fountain pen in a light area at upper right "To Donald Burnell / With my best / wishes / Gene Autry." Ever-so-slight smudge to the "D" in "Donald." Quite attractive. unknown

IPS 3½" X 3½" n.p. n.d. October 1955. Very good. Light tape stain at each corner. Original one-of-a-kind black-and-white snapshot of Autry in full cowboy regalia signing an autograph surrounded by a couple of fans. At the bottom in bold black fountain pen he inscribes and signs: "To Donald / With My best / wishes / Gene Autry." The ink skips a bit on the "ld" in "Donald" and the "st" in "best" and one tape stain imposes partly on the "G" in "Gene." Overall still an attractive example on a unique image. Likely taken at the Coliseum in Chicago. unknown

Signed leaflet heavy buff stock 6" X 9" 4pp n.p. n.y. Fine. Reproduction of Bailey's lithograph of St. Paul's Chapel with printed caption beneath "Columbia University / in the City of New York / on the / New York Central." Just below the image the artist boldly inscribes "To Arnold Gates" and signs in full in black ink. Inner pages 2 and 3 blank and fourth page features two columns of text about Columbia University front and rear pages thus display nicely side by side. No publisher or year noted but likely of 1930s vintage and presumably a New York Central marketing piece. Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 became a noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. unknown

On letterhead of "Battelle Memorial Institute" Bain arranges a date "to meet with the Chicago section once more. In these war times it is not always possible to keep appointments made so far ahead. As for title for the talk how would this do 'The Place of Philippine Mines in the Far Eastern Future' or 'Ores and Industry in the Philippines' or 'One Mining Man's experiences in the Philippines in War time'." Bold and attractive. It was while in the Philippines that Bain died. A handsome example. unknown

Boldly signed with his usual diminutive signature.
