Though cryptic it seems he pens a newspaper or magazine editor who commiserated with whom about the 1887 Wagner protests. Near fine. Single 8-cent "Rise of the Spirit of Independence" stamp at upper right; no decorative cachet at left and no recipient's name/address. The twins each sign large and bold in black fineline Ann on top Abby below near the lower left. Not a First Day Cover but the enterprising collector used this stamp because it depicts newspapers being pulled off a colonial hand-pull press and this cancellation as relevant to the coincidental nature of twin sisters in identical professions. Lang signs boldly in a light area at the lower left of the image area and in a somewhat darker area at the lower right adds "Christ / 1900-10-22. / 1926." Small signed photos of Lang are routine but large and unusual poses such as this are quite scarce. Superb and unusual. unknown

38964This officer with the USAAF's 364th Bomb Squadron was flying his B-17 Flying Fortress over Nazi-controlled Europe when it was attacked and disabled whereupon he ordered his crew to parachute to safety while he managed to fly the craft with two crew too injured to parachute to a crash landing in friendly territory -- for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Heavy stock printed "Medal of Honor Recipient" card 6" X 4" with his printed full name and rank and the date of his heroic act "Over Europe / February 20 1944". Still unaccustomed to the French language he asked for help translating his letter: ""J'espère bien mieux te connaître . Gérard a traduit ceci de l'anglais pour moi. Comprendrais-tu si la prochaine fois j'écrivais en anglais . "" ""I hope to get to know you much better . Gérard translated this from English for me. Would you understand if next time I wrote in English . "" After many years spent in Greece Egypt and Rhodes the traveling writer Lawrence Durrell was forced to flee Cyprus following popular uprisings that led the island to its independence from the British crown. She was nicknamed ""Buttons"" in memory of their first meeting where the young woman wore a dress covered with buttons. Henry Miller also fell under the charm of ""Buttons"" praising her beauty and eternal youth in exceptional unpublished letters. The three companions spent memorable Parisian evenings of which we retain precious autograph traces through their epistolary exchanges.
