Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in San Diego California on 1971 October 29 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Set of four "Historic Preservation" stamps at upper right. Near the bottom running almost the full length of the envelope Brindle signs large and bold in black ballpoint adding "Designer" afterward. 28555One of England's most memorable antiquaries and its foremost architectural critic and historian who practically created the genre authoring and editing such large multi-volume works as "Architectural Antiquities of Great Britain" 1805-14 "Cathedral Antiquities of England" 1814-35 "Architectural Antiquities of Normandy" 1825-27 "Picturesque Antiquities of English Cities" 1830 and others. ALS 2pp recto and verso 4" X 6¼" n.p. n.y. "Wednesday Morning". Very good. Ever-so-slightly age toned and lightly soiled. Addressed to his old friend William Jerdan 1782-1869 Scottish author and journalist long-time editor of "The Literary Gazette" 1817-51. Certainly writing to Jerdan during his "Literary Gazette" editorship Britton notes in part: "I inclose the first copy of a pamphlet for your acceptance hope you will have an opportunity to read parts of it before your next publication. It is the first prose productions of a young Gentleman who has shewn first rate talents in composition & therefore owe you will be pleased to know more of & I shall have much pleasure to introduce him to you. I am persuaded you will approve of the tone and sentiments of this pamphlet." One wonders what the "prose productions" were and who this "young Gentleman" may have been. Accompanied by an outstanding steel-engraved portrait of Britton 4¼" X 6½" London England 1820. Published by J. Asperne for the 1 April 1820 edition of the "European Magazine" this heavy stock portrait depicts Britton seated at a desk drawing architectural plans with a quill pen as he gazes at the viewer; two volumes of his "Cathedral Antiquities of England" may be seen on the table and rows of books and literary busts fill the background. A nice example of this uncommon autograph and a superb portrait. unknown
40569This noted Montana-born children's book author/illustrator is remembered for "The Runaway Sardine" her first book 1929 and her popular "Kristie" series as well as many other illustrated titles: "To Market! To Market!" 1930 "Till Potatoes Grow on Trees" 1938 "Too Fast for John" 1940 "The Topsy-Turvy Family" 1943 "The Greedy Goat" 1944 "Drusilla" 1963 and others. Offered here is the near-complete original ink-and-watercolor artwork for an early title illustrated by Brock: Louise F. Encking's translation of E.T.A. Hoffmann's classic "The Nutcracker and the Mouse=King" published by Albert Whitman & Co. of Chicago in 1930 when Brock was just starting out and hungry for work. Consists of 25 heavy onion skin leaves each two sheets either stapled or tipped together at top approximately 11½" X 14½" 14 containing a large single black ink line drawings six signed by Brock at lower margin and the remainder mostly containing two small drawings per sheet. All 25 have an overlay sheet on top of the ink drawings each bearing hand colored elements. Below each ink drawing Brock pens a caption which often differs from that which appears in the published book. Very good overall. Minor occasional soiling most about edges and edgewear. Bold and handsome illustrations for almost the entire book some with pencilled editor's notes in the margins including one or two illustrations omitted from the published book. Front cover art is absent present only in the form of an 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white photograph used for production purposes. The simple rear dust jacket art is present on a 12½" X 16½" heavy card stock board as well along with an 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white production photograph of same. A fabulous and quite scarce archive that shows the creative process at work. unknown
18025This English statesman 1st Earl of Midleton and 9th Viscount Midleton held a wide array of important positions: member of Parliament 1880-1906 Under-Secretary of State for War 1895-98 member of the Privy Council 1897 Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs 1898-1900 Secretary of State for War 1900-03 and Secretary of State for India 1903-05. ALS 3pp lettersheet 4½" X 7" n.p. 1905 July 12. Addressed to Lady Cowper. Near fine. On fine stationery bearing an oval blind-embossed "House of Commons" seal on the first leaf Brodrick chats with an aristocratic lady about social matters. Reads in part: "We were so sorry to hear of Ld. Cowper's illness & trust he is really better. It must be such an anxiety." Bold and attractive. This came from the collection of Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. unknown
20149The handsome leading man is best remembered for television's "The Sheriff of Cochise" 1956-60 retitled "U.S. Marshal" though he also appeared in some Westerns and the 3D horror film "Revenge of the Creature." Stunning glossy IPS heavy stock 16" X 20" Chicago IL 1961 March 18. Near fine. Handsome half-length portrait of this he-man in his sheriff's getup leaning against a saddle and gazing soulfully at the viewer. In the large blank area at upper right he signed and inscribes large and bold in blue ballpoint: "To My Good Friend / Donald M. Burnell -- / Kindest Regards and Lots / of Luck -- / From / John Bromfield / U.S. Marshal / March 18 1961 / Amphitheatre -- Chicago." Ink adhesion begins quite strong though his pen began "spotting" or "dotting" during the last few lines -- still even those lines are easily legible. This incredibly attractive oversize item was likely created for some promotional purpose but it bears no photographer's credit or other markings recto or verso. Choice vintage piece signed just after the show's demise -- the pose is known though it's likely one of a kind in this format. Stunning for display. unknown

Bit of wear; minor tape stains on verso. Delightful note to an admirer: "While I hope you live as long as I have and longer I hope you won't get as beat-up looking and feeling. There must be some way of avoiding it if you begin young. some 20 years ago a magazine editor friend of mine asked me for a photo to run with some advertising. I sent him the best I had. Then he wrote back. asking me if I didn't have one with hair on. Since I was bald before I ever met him I decided to really surprise him. So I went to a photographer and had a picture made with hair on my head. Around the Saturday Evening Post editorial rooms this was considered rather funny. here is one of them. Like the girl who wasn't named Miss America I wish I were better looking." Bold full signature. Accompanied by the aforementioned photograph: IPS 10" X 8" n.p. n.y. Very good. Absolutely delightful closeup of a very bald Brooks in pullover sweater and tie at the right facing left and looking into a small wall mirror which faces the photo's viewer -- in which Brooks' reflection WITH A FULL HEAD OF HAIR gazes out! A superb example of dark room trickery. In a light area of his sweater at the photo's lower right he boldly inscribes and signs in black ink: "For / George Gianetti / with my best wishes / Geo S Brooks." The most fun and unusual signed photograph we've ever handled -- and we've handled a great many. unknown
30550This two-term Mississippi governor 1844-48 and senator 1854-61 of flawless reputation for integrity and oratory resigned the U.S. Senate and was elected to the Confederate Senate serving until the war's end; he also served as captain of Company H in the 18th Mississippi Infantry. 42103This American cartoonist supposedly created more than 24 comic strips including "The Inventor" which ran from 1904 to 1914 and assisted with four others; one cartooning historian describes him as "an absolute whirling dervish at the drawing board producing more material for the daily pages than anyone except the great George Frink'; he worked for the "Chicago Daily News" ca. 1908-24 and the "New York Herald-Tribune" 1925-42. On a heavy stock 5" X 3" card the cartoonist pens "Sincerely yours" and signs in cursive adding his cartoonist's printed stylized "T. Brown" alongside. Very good. Faintly age toned with mounting traces on verso. Along the bottom edge is typed "Cartoonist 'Chicago Daily News'. / April 29 1922." Very uncommon. unknown
38324Brown was an American ace who downed six enemy aircraft in 57 missions in his P-51 Mustang; Knoke was a Knight's Cross recipient a German Luftwaffe ace who in more than 2000 missions claimed 33 downed aircraft and another 19 unconfirmed kills penning the 1953 Luftwaffe classic "I Flew for the Fuhrer." Signed Commemorative Envelope 6½" X 4¼" cancelled on the 60th anniversary of the Royal Air Force's 207 Squadron on 15 November 1976. Fine. Left half consists of a pictorial color cachet showing "Lancasters of No. 207 Squadron Northern France 1944" and inset portrait of "Marshall of the Royal Air Force the Lord Tedder of Glenguin" with text at right detailing the flight on which this envelope was flown which two of the crew have signed. Special postal cancellation. At top center Knoke signs boldly in black fineline. Beneath this Brown signs in red fineline adding "Lt. Col. USAF Ret / 20th F.G. 55th F.S. / King's Cliffe England." Limitation statement inkstamped on verso notes this is number 6 of 10 examples produced. unknown

Huge and bold "All good wishes to my friend / Donald Burnell / Joe E. Brown / 6/22/60" in blue ballpoint on an irregular-trimmed roughly-triangular 5¼" width at top X 4" height slip bearing "JOE E. BROWN" printed in green at the top -- presumably trimmed from a sheet of his letterhead. Very good. Other than odd shape quite handsome. Accompanied by a superb vintage sepia-tone heavy stock 5" X 7" matte-finish photograph bearing a preprinted signature and inscription at the bottom -- a head-and-shoulders portrait of a smiling young Brown as he appeared in the 1930s the kind of image sent out by the studios in bulk at the time in response to fan mail. 40520This popular Scottish physician and essayist gained more reknown as a man of letters than a man of medicine though he did become a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1847; friend of Thackeray and Twain he collected his essays into "Rab and His Friends" 1859 "Marjorie Fleming" 1863 and "John Leech and Other Papers" 1882 though he's mainly remembered for the 3-volume "Horae Subsecivae" "Leisure Hours" 1859. 27014The younger brother of poet William Cullen Bryant was an Illinois poet farmer politician and newspaper editor; his books of verse include "Poems Written from Youth to Old Age 1824-1884" 1885 and "The Life and Poems of John Howard Bryant" 1894. AQS 1p 5" X 8" Princeton Illinois 1895 May 20. Very good. Faint bit of age toning. Stanza from a poem handsomely penned in brown ink in old age: "There is no breath of common air / No ray of light from Star or Sun / No Shade of beauty anywhere; / But whispers of the Almighty One" nicely signed in full. Bryant does not identify it but this is the penultimate stanza from his poem "The Streams of Life" which appears on pages 227-28 of the "Life and Poems" volume published the year before he penned this excerpt.
