197884596Paris 1978. Fine. Paris s. d. 1978 14.50 x 20.50 cm une feuille Important autograph letter signed by Julien Gracq 53 lines in black ink addressed to his close friend and monographer Ariel Denis establishing him as his biographer. Julien Gracq expresses his regret that his friend Ariel Denis was not selected despite his intervention by the Berlin Academy to teach: ""Je vous avais recommandé de mon mieux mais je doute que cela ait été en Allemagne d'une grande efficacité. Je sais d'ailleurs que comme vous le pressentiez les concurents étaient en nombre."" ""I recommended you as best I could but I doubt that was very effective in Germany. I know moreover that as you suspected there were many competitors."" To help his friend the author of Rivage des Syrtes suggested to publisher Seghers who wanted to publish a work about him in his famous ""Poètes d'aujourd'hui"" collection the name of Ariel Denis having had no news from the first biographer considered for this publication: ""Ils me demandent de leur suggérer un nom. ""They ask me to suggest a name. I indicated Lautrat's. And I indicated yours not knowing of course at all whether work of this kind might please you. It goes without saying that if Seghers approached you you must be absolutely free to accept or refuse."" He also hopes to see his friend again soon before the summer holidays: "". si je ne vous revois pas avant juillet je vous souhiate des vacances à la fois paisibles et laborieuses en comptant vous revoir d'ici l'automne."" "".if I don't see you again before July I wish you holidays that are both peaceful and productive counting on seeing you again by autumn."" He concludes his letter with his judgments as an informed cinephile: ""J'ai surtout revu des films de Tati et je me suis beaucoup ennuyé dans une salle déserte au film de Mme Sagan."" ""I mainly rewatched Tati films and I was very bored in a deserted theater by Mme Sagan's film."" At Julien Gracq's instigation Ariel Denis would indeed accept Seghers' proposal to publish a volume in his ""Poètes d'aujourd'hui"" collection about the author of Au château d'Argol thereby becoming one of his best and most remarkable biographers. unknown

Then the author of ""Le Rivage des Syrtes"" celebrates the critics' benevolence toward him with his characteristic modesty : "". j'ai lu en effet l'article de France soir que vous me signalez : je n'ai pas eu à me plaindre de la critique surtout à propos d'un ouvrage qui n'était pas très important et qui ne prétendait pas l'être."" 40474This Union officer served on the staff of Brigadier General James Shields whose troops faced Stonewall Jackson's Confederate troops in the Shenandoah Valley in June 1862 and later commanded the Second Louisiana Regiment Cavalry; he was a good friend of famed Irish soldier Miles W. Keogh 1840-76 killed in the Battle of the Little Bighorn who served under him in the Papal Army during the Italian rebellion in 1860 and who fought with him in the Battle of Port Republic; he's reported to have become enamored with famed Southern spy "Belle" Boyd" at one point and to have unwittingly revealed military secrets to her. Outstanding pencilled ANS 2pp recto and verso heavy stock 4" X 2½" card "Conrad's Bridge" Virginia n.d. ca. early June 1862. Addressed to "General" probably James Shields. Very good. Lightly age toned. In this remarkable small report Keily reports in a small tight but fairly legible hand to his commander that "Col. Carroll moves his comm'd. at p.m. and will push on as rapidly as possible some cannonading heard this morning in the direction of Harrisonburg I would respectfully submit that if the Infantry did not move rapidly enough to carry out your views at Wainesborough before Jacksons arrival there a reconnaisance composed of cavalry conducted cautiously might attain the object with a good Guide which we have procured I would be glad to undertake it -- respectfully" and signs off adding his rank "Capt. A.D.C" beneath. A rather light challenging to transcribe postscript reads "P.S. Just received information from a reliable source that Jackson has --- --- --- Train on the --- Pt. Republic Road." It's difficult to precisely date Keily's note but General Shields did write General McDowell on June 4 1862 that "Colonel Carroll. after a forced night's march reached Conrad's Bridge this morning at 5 o'clock which bridge he found burned" -- which likely dates Keily's letter from this date or shortly after. Whether Shields took Keily up on his offer to lead a cavalry reconnaissance is unclear. Shields 1810-79 is perhaps best remembered as the Illinois politician who almost fought a duel with Abraham Lincoln in 1842; he's also the only person in American history to serve as U.S. senator from three different states Illinois Minnesota and Missouri; as a brigadier general of volunteers in the Civil War his lackluster performance as commander of the 2nd Division of the V Corps in the Army of the Potomac during the crucial Valley Campaign caused him to resign his commission. On June 9th the Battle of Port Republic took place a costly Confederate victory in which Jackson's 6000 troops faced off 3500 Union troops losing just over 800 men to the Union's loss of just over 1000 men -- a battle at which Keily himself was severely wounded in the face while leading a charge of Ohio cavalry up a hill into a barrage of Confederate artillery fire. The following year after painful recuperation Keily ended up on the staff of General Charles P. Stone in New Orleans recruiting cavalry troops in that occupied state. Late in the war he was court-martialed for "conduct unbecoming an officer" but the charges were shown false and by the end of the war he was brevetted a brigadier general. Keily died from yellow fever in Louisiana at age 38 shortly after the war's end making his autograph material quite scarce -- and a choice war-date item such as this most desirable. This remarkable war-date communication sheds interesting light on Shields as commander during the disastrous Valley Campaign. unknown

20979This brigadier general survived the Civil War Spanish-American War Indian uprisings the Phillipine insurrection and World War One -- then died after tripping on a rug; when he wasn't fighting he was writing producing almost 60 novels about army life and frontier romance. ANS 1p heavy stock 4¼" X 3½" card Milwaukee WI n.y. Addressed to Stalham L. Williams Jr. Near fine. Minor mounting traces on verso. Thanks a correspondent for a "pleasant letter" and a "valued suggestion" -- clearly a book idea -- and continues: "Just now I am 'loaded to the guards' with work but in that indefinite future -- 'one of these days' -- I may be able to handle that subject 'without gloves." Bold and quite attractive. unknown
40511This British naval officer commanded the fireship HMS Blaze in 1856 when he captured Calcutta and in 1857 at capture of Hoogly in West Bengal; he was knighted in 1782 for his service in India became rear admiral in 1787 and named commander-in-chief of The Downs in 1790 became a baronet and was named governor of Newfoundland in 1792 became vice-admiral in 1793 and became a member of Parliament -- among numerus other accomplishments. ALS 2pp recto and verso 7½" X 9¼" Albemarle England 1796 June 22. Addressed to "My Lord Duke." Very good. Minor mounting traces on verso of blank integral address leaf. Presumably on behalf of a constituent from his district King "begs leave to become a Solicitor to your Grace in behalf of a Person who was formerly clerk in the ordnance at upnor Castle which situation he left on account of ill Health and being now in indigent Circumstances humble implores the benefit of the Charter-House. He has many Years been a regular Voter in favour of Government at Rochester. Previous to my giving your Grace this trouble I applied to other Governours but finding their turn or nomination Engaged and being informed the King has two turns to one of the Governours and that His Majesty is not usually engaged before hand I am advised to humbly solicit His Majesty gracious favour through your Grace to Mr. James Burgis the Person above attended to." Upnor Castle on the coast of Kent in southeast England was an ancient fortress converted into the largest maritime magazine in the country at that time. Boldly handsomely penned in brown ink. Below his signature King adds the rank to which he was promoted the previous year -- "Admiral." A superb example. unknown
27606This Cleveland merchant became well-known as an abolitionist reformer and occasional publisher; among his writings are "The Sabbath" 1840 "The Immigrant's Good Samaritan" 1848 "Law and Government" 1849 "Thoughts on the Fugitive Slave Law and Nebraska Bill" 1955 "The Great Law Book" 1857 "Word of Christ" 1857 and "The Slavery Question Settled" 1862. ALS 1p integral address leaf 7 3/4" X 9 3/4" Chicago IL 1847 January 26. Addressed to Philip C. Johnson Illinois secretary of state. Very good. Mildly but evenly age toned; small separations along original folds neatly and archivally repaired on blank verso. Opens oddly with a discussion of the price of dried peaches -- Kingsbury was a merchant after all! "Mr. Grubbs informed me yesterday that he had just rec'd a letter from the Digings saying that Dormody had just left there for the east -- perhaps Chicago. having sold about all his stock -- that he had not succeeded very well. I am extremely anxious to see him as if I could I have little doubt in some reasonable way possession would be obtained." Dormody is no doubt William Dormody 1796-1876 an Irish-born merchant and businessman who left the Midwest around this time to try his luck in the goldfields of California -- and succeeded; here Kingsbury appears to lust after Dormody's unsold merchandise. He then discusses what appears to be the acquisition of a newspaper -- seeking no doubt a soapbox from which he could broadcast his controversial abolitionist and reform views. ".I have been negociating for the whole of the Western Herald -- financial as well as Editorial. Today the prospect is less than heretofore that I shall engage in it -- & for two reasons vis the price a little too high & the want of firm health. The situation would suit my taste very well but perhaps I could be as useful elsewhere. My expenses here are so high $9 or 10 per week that I may leave in a few days now when the roads are good." Fine content addressing both of Kingsbury's concerns: pursuing merchandise to stock his Cleveland store and pursuing a newspaper purchase to further his reform agenda. Quite uncommon. unknown
26751This popular and prolific American novelist often penned such inspirational fiction for young adults as "The Singular Miss Smith" "Transfiguration of Miss Philura" and "The Resurrection of Miss Cynthia." Two items: First an ALS 1p 6" X 7" Staten Island New York Kingsley Avenue no less! 1923 February 27. Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Fine. Charming note trying to oblige an admirer: "Somewhere in the attic are more respectable 'scraps' of manuscript than the enclosed; but at present I am not able to endure the winter rigors of that repository of 'literary remains.' This is a rejected beginning of the thirteenth chapter of the book I am now writing: 'The Life of Henry Fowle Durant' Founder of Wellesley College. I am sorry I saw fit to crumple it before dropping it into the waste basket." Second the aforementioned Autograph Manuscript Signed 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Very good. Despite Kingsley's claim of having crumpled it this thin onionskin-type paper bears almost no evidence of having been so abused. Handsomely and closed penned in black fountain pen and bearing a number of crossouts additions and deletions this is a very full page 89 clearly marked chapter "XIII" and opens: "In her singularly lucid and beautiful 'Interpretation of the Genius of Henry Fowle Durant' Anne Eugenia Morgan writes of him thus: 'Henry Fowle Durant came to provide a transition in our human course -- a beautiful curve for a staircase that leads up up into the clearing mysteries of the bow of light the bow of higher truth luminous in our time." Most unusual to find earlier versions of published works such as this. Kingsley's "Life of Henry Fowle Durant" was published the following year in New York by Century Company. This fascinating pair is accompanied by Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown

18120Though little is known about this American writer he had a following as a horror and sci-fi writer of such short stories as "The Caller in the Night" 1917 and other oft-anthologized ghost tales; his "In the Open Code" appeared in "The Best Short Stories of 1918" and he also published novels such as "The End of the Flight" 1917 and "Gallant Rogue" 1921. Two items: First a TLS 1p 8½" X 11" New York NY 1923 March 2. Addressed to Professor Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Near fine. "I feel truly honored by your wish to include something of mine in your collection of autographs and manuscripts" he begins. "If the scribble I am sending you is not to your taste you must let me know. My book manuscripts are the property of the publishers and magazine editors never save or return the 'copy' of stories; hence this scrap from an unfinished yarn is the only thing at hand." Second is the accompanying "scrap" -- labeled "Rough draft" in red pencil at the upper left in Kline's hand -- which is titled "Sunk Without a Trace" and is an AMS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Near fine. It consists of one very full page of bold and legible text beginning: "On the 15th of every March I regularly receive a line from my friend Dr. Carver. Regularly his letter commands me to dine with him at the ___ Club on the 21st of the month. This annual feast has become a fixture between us. The dinner is not to herald the technical and sometimes the actual arrival of Spring. It is to celebrate it may be the fourth the sixth -- this year it was the seventh -- anniversary of Dr. Carver's divorce." Could become a horror tale -- but in any case it's an attractive and interesting rough draft example that makes you want to read more.
