Together with AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by Irving on his stationery to Neilson laid in in which Irving says that Neilson's photos will also be used on the UK edition and jokes that another photo to be used for the American and Canadian editions is more flattering because it doesn't show Irving's face. Closes with mention of a nearby school in Vermont. Neilson was a preeminent motorcycle journalist and editor of Cycle Magazine. 40516This unusual British politician and writer spurned his upper class upbringing and became the first to expound the ideas of Karl Marx in England; he founded the country's first socialist political party the Social Democratic Federation in 1881 and later the National Socialist Party. Good content ALS 2pp 1st and 4th leaves 5" X 8" Westminster England 1884 April 2. Addressed to "My dear Sir." Very good. On letterhead of "The Democratic Federation" Hyndman thanks the unnamed recipient "for your contributions which no doubt we shall be able to make use of advantageously." He continues: "I am very glad to hear you are getting 'enthused' on Socialism. It is to my mind the only chance of our living to be something better than this miserable cut-throat society. The Bradlaugh Dilute has given us a great lift." Charles Bradlaugh 1833-91 was a controversial British politician and atheist who refused to take the oath of office which assumed Christianity but refused to forfeit his seat in Parliament. Howard 1626-98 was an English dramatist auditor of exchequer at the time of this document and another of Dryden's patrons as well as his brother-in-law. Requests payment of 455 pounds to Henry Sidney for "three months or ninety one dayes of his ordinary entertainmt." Sidney 1641-1704 was envoy to The Hague at the time. Fine content concerning Davies ordering copies of Hutchinson's edition of Rhodes' short story collection "The Little World Waddies" which he had designed and printed for him by the legendary printer/typographer/book designer Carl Hertzog. "We have been swamped with orders" writes Hutchinson "and have fallen far behind due to bindery output; we are filling orders in chronological sequence but have made an exception in your case." As an unrelated aside he comments: "I would judge that you are of Welsh extraction. the most soul-stirring experience I have ever had or expect to have was watching the debarkation of a Welsh regiment at Oran in Algeria when they marched from the quay up the steep sloping hillside into the town singing the 'March of the Men of Harlech'." Davies ordered 52 copies of "The Little World Waddies" by the way -- a book that today generally sells for several hundred dollars. Very good. Quite mild age toning; four-punched at left margin not affecting text. Page from "Act I" of Hurlbut's play "Hail and Farewell" which was filmed in 1925 under the title "The Heart of a Siren." This double spaced page notes "April 1870" and begins by setting the scene: "The scene is the terrace of a hotel at Nice looking out to sea." and proceeds with dialogue between Comtesse Chateauriand and Comtesse d'Avillier. Almost no handwritten corrections -- only several small pencilled grammatical changes. Along the bottom in light black fountain pen it is inscribed and signed: "This is a page from the first draft / of 'Hail & Farewell' you are more / than welcome to it if it will make / a part of your collection / William Hurlbut." From the collection of Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject and accompanied by Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown

DS 1p lettersheet 7½" X 9 3/4" n.p. 30 October 1845. Very good. Original folds visible but not weakened. Hundley and two others "being duly Sworn" have "seen and Examined the Estray Hog taken up by Jas. Marshall and. do appraise the said Estray Hog at the Sum of Two Dollars & fifty cents. The said Hog is a harrow white colour about two years old no brand marked with an under keel in the left and overkeel in the Right Ear. We were informed that when the said Hog appeared on the plantation about 12 months ago was a boar and that he has been altered since -- & that he has ranged on this plantation & in the neighbourhood for 12 months past." Neatl penned in deep blue ink and signed at the conclusion by Hundley and two others Charles Huthison George I. Roberts. Below this justice of the peace Roberts testifies and signs again then below this another figure partly legible but presumably county clerk testfies "Sworn to by G I Roberts before me." "Estray is simply legalese for a domesticated animal found lost or wandering and the purpose of this "Notice of Estray" may have been to authorize the sheriff to impound and sell the animnal to recover upkeep costs. I fear the time will come when you will also weed your collection & amongst others will wonder how you could have made the present investment. The Signature Compares Favorably With Other Hubbard Signatures From This Time And Authenticity Is Guaranteed. The Signature Was Confirmed To Me Personally Some Years Ago By Forrest Ackerman Who Remembered When It Was Signed For Him On The Occasion Of Their Lunch Together While Ackerman Was Still Hubbard's Agent For Science Fiction.
