Interesting content almost certainly concerning Matthew Arnold's father Thomas Arnold 1795-1842 and his just-published "Sermons: Christian Life Its Hopes Fears and Close." Writes Hallam in part: "I return you Dr Arnold's Sermons with many thanks. They show all that characteristic independence of mind which almost amounts to originality & perhaps does produce an original component in the Dr himself though no one idea may be absolutely novel. It appears to me he has taken very good ground in his arguments against the school but not the most popular ground." Four months after Hallam wrote this Arnold died at the age of 46. Coomes was one of the best known of the Texas dime novelists and was killed in a car crash in Iowa in 1920. Interesting snide and rather morbid! Accompanied by a 3" X 5½" printed pink promotional 4-page leaflet for Harbaugh's 1907 book "Lyrics of the Gray." Fine. Features blurbs by Mrs. J.E.B. 20964This German violinist played with the prestigious Frankfurt Quartet and played the premiere performance of the Brahms concerto in New York and Paris. AMuQS 1p heavy stock 3¼" X 2½" n.p. Chicago 1905 December 16. Very good. Slightest of age toning; mounting traces on verso. On a 3¼" X 1" slip neatly tipped to the center of this heavy card Heerman neatly and boldly writes out several measures of intricate music identifying it above as "Rondo Beethoven" it's from the third movement of Beethoven's violin concerto. On the heavy stock card above this slip he adds "To Miss F. Maryanna Neumann" and below the slip he writes "Remembrance of 16 Dec. 1905 / Hugo Heermann." Heerman taught in Chicago from 1906 to 1909 so this was written on the eve of his residency there. Quite attractive and very uncommon. unknown

Near fine. On letterhead bearing the blue-embossed "Privy Council Office" insignia Helps thanks hid friend for "a very pleasant review in the Daily Telegraph Today -- at least very pleasing to the author. There was a good point taken in it -- showing an opinion of mine -- which will be valuable to me hereafter. It was in that part where the critic comments upon my chapters relating to local & imperial government. It is quite true what he says that I should have noticed the new local bodies. 16053The rear admiral who served as commander-in-chief of the North Atlantic Fleet 1901-03 took part in the attack on Fort Sumter saw action aboard the Colorado as part of the Western Gulf Blockading Squadron in 1861-62 and the Judith in Pensacola Harbor and was executive officer on the Housatonic when she was destroyed by a torpedo off Charleston; from 1865-68 he served aboard the Hartford in the Asiatic Squadron. Quite strange that the seated U.S. Senator would be writing on letterhead of this banking firm founded by the man who in 1887 Hiscock defeated in the caucus for the New York senate seat -- former representative and ambassador and then- current vice president Levi P. Morton. Odd that -- and the significance if any is unclear. unknown

"Lydia will join me here soon and we will settle to normal living again. Mother is much better now." With original envelope addressed in Hodge's hand and also signed. Uncommon. Accompanied by a superb original 1949 black-and-white glossy news agency photograph International News Photo 8½" X 6½". Original newsprint mimeographed text sheet still present and tipped to verso as issued. Titled "Says Reds Arm Koreans and Flout Pact" this text begins: "Called back to the United States for an over-all review of the Korean situation Lt. General John R. Hodge U.S. Commander in Korea is shown right with Secretary of War Robert Patterson as he went to report to President Truman." This exceptional image is pristine and itself scarce. A choice personal letter and choice original photograph -- a quite uncommon pair. unknown
26718This nonacademic English philosopher was a companion of William James with whom he belonged to the London group "Scratch Eight"; he was the first president 1880-94 of the Aristotelian Society; among his books are "The Metaphysic of Experience" "The Philosophy of Reflection" and "Time and Space." ALS 3pp 4½" X 7" Lincolnshire England 1870 July 18. Addressed to "My dear Harris." Very good. Good content referring to the political situation in France. In part: "If you go to Paris now you will find it at a most interesting time in all the fever of the beginning of the war. I think their going to war on the part of France out of pure jealousy of Prussia utilised by Napoleon for the supposed interest of his own dynasty is treason to the cause of civilisation and the union of Western Europe." Sure enough France declared war on Prussia the very day after Hodgson penned this letter. Mentions his summer plans "quietly and steadily reading in London in August when London is empty and though hot not feverish". A handsome and interesting example. From the collection of University of Chicago geology professor Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. unknown

Intriguingly cryptic contents about a scroll of some sort: "It was very thoughtful of you to mention Whittington's tome but I was already aware of it not being the original one. With respect to Mr Hume and the scroll I am sorry that you had not time to home with him when he would be in or he studies it seems at University College and would be about in the day. I am sure he will have much pleasure any time that you are in Town in showing the scroll to you but I very much doubt whether he would sell it. At all events your purpose if you become the purchase of restoring it to the is very honorable to you." Interesting and worthy of further research. unknown

ADS 1p 8½" X 7" n.p. London 1680 August 2. Addressed "To our very Loving Sir Robt" Howard. Very good. Minor chipping at edges. Howard 1626-98 was an English dramatist auditor of exchequer at the time of this document and another of Dryden's patrons as well as his brother-in-law. Requests payment of 455 pounds to Henry Sidney for "three months or ninety one dayes of his ordinary entertainmt." Sidney 1641-1704 was envoy to The Hague at the time. 40516This unusual British politician and writer spurned his upper class upbringing and became the first to expound the ideas of Karl Marx in England; he founded the country's first socialist political party the Social Democratic Federation in 1881 and later the National Socialist Party. Good content ALS 2pp 1st and 4th leaves 5" X 8" Westminster England 1884 April 2. Addressed to "My dear Sir." Very good. On letterhead of "The Democratic Federation" Hyndman thanks the unnamed recipient "for your contributions which no doubt we shall be able to make use of advantageously." He continues: "I am very glad to hear you are getting 'enthused' on Socialism. It is to my mind the only chance of our living to be something better than this miserable cut-throat society. The Bradlaugh Dilute has given us a great lift." Charles Bradlaugh 1833-91 was a controversial British politician and atheist who refused to take the oath of office which assumed Christianity but refused to forfeit his seat in Parliament. Hyndman letters are rather scarce especially from this seminal period in his life. unknown
