Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. Near fine. Nice note to an admirer: "Yours. finds me in my winter home far from my library so I cannot send the MS.-page of any published novel. However I inclose a page from my last book not as yet announced named but only tentatively 'Tandy Sees the World.' . The MS. notes for revision are in shorthand of my devising." Bold full signature. Second is the aforementioned page a TMS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Very good. On thin onion-skin type paper typed in purple ink this nice double-spaced typescript opens with characteristic Ellis prose: "The younger man stared at him perplexedly puzzled less by the dancing eyes which seemed scintillating with a rush of sparks blown in a wind than by the enigmatic utterances of the kindly mouth." Crossouts additions and deletions penned throughout including several lines added to the verso of the leaf. In the left margin vertically he writes "First draft of novel of 1922-1923 / J. Breckenridge Ellis / All rights reserved." Ellis does not seem to have published a book by this title but whether this title was published under another title warrants further research. Accompanied by Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. A handsome pair. unknown

The aforementioned speech is also present a 14-page illustrated pamphlet 4" X 9" published by The Indiana State Chamber of Commerce in 1946. Fine. Titled "When Will Congress Talk Back" and boldly signed and inscribed by Gates on the front wrapper to Gates. Fine. In this speech delivered before the Hoosier State Press Association in 5 April 1946 Gates states his belief in taking back to the state and local level responsibilities which the federal government assumed during the Depression and war years. 16585Old 98" a two-time All-America halfback and Heisman Trophy winner at University of Michigan 1938-40; with the Los Angeles Rams 1946-47; elected to the College Football Hall of Fame; father of actor Mark Harmon. "Elyse asked that I send you a couple of signatures" Harmon writes. "I hope that the enclosed will be o.k." Bold signature first name only in dark red. Harmon's wife the actress Elyse Knox 1917-2012 was providing original artwork for this greeting card company that published a line of Christmas cards featuring art by Hollywood stars. The "couple of signatures" mentioned is present in the form of an 8½" X 3" slip from which a portion has been neatly snipped off at upper left the Knox signature actually used on the greeting card leaving her large blue ballpoint signature beneath. Accompanied by a fine 5" X 7" glossy black and white photograph an informal 3/4th pose of a smiling Harmon in suit and tie and smiling Knox in dress and pearls holding hands. 31968Copper boom town Butte Montana notorious as a lawless town filled with bars and brothels began to turn around when this noted Butte merchant a progressive Republican was elected mayor in 1935 until 1941 and proclaimed in his inaugural address "It is doubtful if any city is in a more deplorable physical and financial condition" and set about to clean up the town. TNS 1p 8½" X 11" Butte MT 1940 August 2. Addressed to Samuel Tuzzo. Very good. On "City of Butte" letterhead noting "Office of Mayor" Hauswirth writes "It is with pleasure that I add my name to your list of signatures." He signs in full in bold green ink. Benjamin 1859-1940 the pioneering autograph dealer whose firm was run by daughter Mary Benjamin until her death not too many years ago. Very good. "Will you send me at Washington the Burke autograph contained in your last Bulletin #1 sent me this morning price $7.50." Strong bold signature with words "at Washington" in Hoar's hand as well. There are a number of historical Burkes this could have been referring to but it is likely that this American politician would have taken an interest in the British statesman. The up-and-coming 25-year-old Lincoln enthusiast self-published this essay in an edition of 300 copies. Good plus. 42283This famed California isolationist and progressive helped found the Progressive Party in 1912 and was chosen Theodore Roosevelt's running mate on that ticket in the 1912 presidential election; he served California as its 23rd governor 1911-17 and senator 1917-45. TNS 1p 8" X 10½" Washington DC 25 April 1919. Addressed to S.R. Gaines. Very good. Some offsetting perhaps from long-ago newsprint contact with faint age toning and minor edgewear. On "United States Senate / Committee on Military Affairs" letterhead Johnson complies with an autograph request signing large and bold in full. Accompanied by a superb original 8½" X 6½" glossy black-and-white news agency photograph a closeup of cigar-chomping Johnson and another conferring. Newsprint text tipped to verso dates the image 9 July 1945 titles it "At Charter Hearing" and describes the scene: "At ratification hearing on the United Nations charter which opened today in Washington Senator Hiram Johnson of Cal. and Senator Tom Connally of Texas." Less than one month later -- on the same day the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima -- Johnson died. unknown

Lightly age toned with inoffensive staple hole at upper left not affecting text and small chip at upper right corner. "I shall be glad to have you use the photograph of me made by Pirie MacDonald in the booklet you are preparing and you are hereby granted permission to secure this from the photographer." Boldly signed in blue with his usual "H.N. MacCracken." The noted New York portrait photographer 1867-1942 -- known as "Photographer of Men" for he only photographed males -- shot anyone who was anyone in that area for decades and MacCracken sat for him in 1924.
