The Deluxe Edition One of 36 Copies. The Deluxe Edition of this classic book originally published in 1977 and subsequently revised and updated. Edmund Everett Garrison 1893-1975 was one of the great fly-rod makers probably the greatest. His rods are collector's items and $15000 is not an unusual price to pay for one. Garrison trained as an engineer worked full time for most of his adult life in a structural engineering firm and only produced his meticulously hand-crafted rods evenings and weekends; his output was thus comparatively small but each rod that left his hand was a masterpiece. He brought to an old art a unique technological competence which made for outstanding performance but it remained an art. <br/><br/><br/><br/>Nearly twenty thousand copies of this book have been sold in previous trade editions; this is one of only 36 Deluxe copies the edition quickly sold out and contains two glossy photographs one of Garrison and family members in which he holds one of his rods the other of Carmichael working on a rod of his own and an ALS of Garrison.<br/><br/><br/><br/>A SPLENDID AND HIGHLY DESIRABLE VOLUME. The manuscript upon which Aldam based his text appeared at auction in 1999; the author's name was revealed to be Robert Whitehead but nothing further of the author is known. Both issues of this scarce work bear the date 1876 on the spine; a very few are recorded with a title page date of 1875 but it appears that no copies were actually sold until the Spring of 1876. Approximately 200 copies were sold over a period of several years. A beautiful production in brighter than usual condition. Collection of stories many on sporting themes edited by William T. Porter who in 1831 founded the American sporting periodical "Spirit of the Times" and served as its editor from 1835 to 1850. He also edited the American Turf Register and Sporting Magazine from 1840-1844 and the annual American Turf Register and Racing & Trotting Calendar from 1845-1855. Porter was a figure of enormous influence in the history of flat racing in America cf. Francis Brinley The Life of William T. Porter 1860 and generally upon the world of American sport. The title story "A Quarter Race in Kentucky" is by "A North Alabamian" attributed to plantation and racing stable owner Thomas Kirkman; other pieces include "A Shark Story"and "A Bear Story" by "J. Cypress Jr." the late William P. Hawes Esq. of New York; and "Bob Herring The Arkansas Bear Hunter" by T.B. Thorpe etc. Interesting glimpse of mid-nineteenth-century sport and humor. Dickens' contribution to Mrs. Peck's Pudding "Threatening Letter to Thomas Hood from an Ancient Gentleman" at pp. 28-34 was first published in Hood's Magazine and Comic Miscellany May 1844 cf. These plates have been used to dine from--there are minute scratches and rubbing here and there and a small chip to the underside of one or two rims--but they are fine overall and ideal for display. Lynn Bogue Hunt. 1 vols. 10-1/2 inches in diameter. Wildfowl China Plates by Lynn Bogue Hunt. On November 3 1943 Lynn Bogue Hunt wrote to Eugene V. Connett founder proprietor and in 1942 liquidator of The Derrydale Press: ".I have been decorating highball glasses plates and doing porcelains for a couple of years and with considerable success on a royalty basis". Looking at these exceptionally attractive and interesting plates it is easy to see why. Hunt's ducks pheasant quail and other species are vigorously depicted in flight with Hunt's caption and signature included on the front surface. On the back of each plate is shown a pair of the subject birds and a lengthy description about 125 words of their characteristics and habits lettered and signed by Hunt. Despite numerous attempts by various practitioners sporting art does not always translate well to other media but with these plates Hunt has successfully combined form and function with elegance and style.<br/><br/><br/><br/>A BEAUTIFUL SET. unknown books
