Connett founder proprietor and in 1942 liquidator of The Derrydale Press: ".I have been decorating highball glasses plates and doing porcelains for a couple of years and with considerable success on a royalty basis". Looking at these exceptionally attractive and interesting plates it is easy to see why. Hunt's ducks pheasant quail and other species are vigorously depicted in flight with Hunt's caption and signature included on the front surface. On the back of each plate is shown a pair of the subject birds and a lengthy description about 125 words of their characteristics and habits lettered and signed by Hunt. Despite numerous attempts by various practitioners sporting art does not always translate well to other media but with these plates Hunt has successfully combined form and function with elegance and style.<br/><br/>A BEAUTIFUL SET. unknown books

A jolly account of two "land-lubbers" who charter a whaling vessel and sail to the east coast of Greenland Jan Mayen and Spitzbergen. Clutterbuck makes no excuses for himself and fellow sailor stating that they know "nothing about the places we were going to or of the 'paraphernalia' of Arctic travel" and their awareness of the sea is limited to it being a "dismally damp place." <br/><br/>They departed Peterhead on the whaler Traveller partially covered in zinc to protect against against the ice on May 1 1888 for a five month voyage. Clutterbuck initally struggled to settle into life at sea first due to sea-sickness and then due to odd meal times. And once he'd finally acclimatised they immediately found themselves in a fog which took ten days to pass. Their muddled bearings are evident on the folding map.<br/><br/>Clutterbuck is a keen observer of life on deck and the world around him. He describes the rocky desolation of Jan Mayen the dramatic coast of Spitzbergen "a rocky eminence so steep . it would defy a bird to fly up it" the ice and the particulars of the Arctic climate in great detail. They also took every opportunity for sport: killing eight hundred and seventy-six seals four reindeer and one polar bear on the journey and much of the work is devoted to it. Interspersed with all this are hot baths huge breakfasts "if there is anything we consider delicious in this sinful world it is young seals kidneys" and evening pipes.<br/><br/>Although published by Longmans much about this book suggests Clutterbuck contributed toward costs. Probably printed in small numbers its scarcity on the market is confirmed by no copies being listed on ABPC or Rare Book Hub. Longmans, Green & Co unknown books

An Angling Classic with Derrydale Associations. A splendid book with Wilkinson's evocative etchings. <br/><br/>Major the Right Honourable John Waller Hills qualified as a solicitor but spent most of his career in Parliament as an MP Privy Councillor and Financial Secretary to the Treasury. In addition to the present volume and books on finance and horse racing he wrote A History of Fly Fishing for Trout 1921 and River Keeper 1934. He died in 1938 just before he was due to receive a Baronetcy; instead this was conferred on his five year old son with the Major's wife being accorded the style and title of a widow of a Baronet. Notes Robb "This is very exceptional if not unique . his merit was equaled by his popularity; he was given the significant and familiar name of "Jack" Hills."<br/><br/>In 1931 Eugene V. Connett proprietor of The Derrydale Press imported some unsold copies of A Summer on the Test for sale to his customers subsequently prompting Frazier to list it in his enumeration of Press titles as "an important and beautiful Derrydale related item". He also notes that in addition to a plain green cloth binding this book "comes in at least one variant binding in cloth which simulates a three-quarter leather binding" as in the copy offered here. <br/><br/>Siegel notes that Connett's copies "were not marked in any manner that would enable one to identify them as being imported for The Derrydale Press".<br/><br/>Not a Derrydale but at least a distant relation and a very nice copy of as Robb puts it "one of those volumes one loves to count among his treasures." This edition places North's essay before the descriptions of the fish. The BM copy has watermarks dated 1832; the present copy is dated 1830 on the title page and the plate leaves are dated 1824 in the watermarks. In the Yellowstone: "Such fishing I have never had before" One of the earliest descriptions of Yellowstone being the account of a hunting expedition to the north-western territories undertaken by the author and six officers plus a contingent of enlisted men including US Secretary of War Gen. Wm. W. Belknap and US Inspector General R. B. Marcy who fell ill and nearly perished on the trip as well as Gen. James W. Forsyth Lt. G. C. Doane Gen N. B. Sweitzer and Col. George L. Gillespie whose photographic portraits illustrate the book. The party traveled some 5000 miles by rail stage steamer and horseback in 53 days seeking elk deer buffalo and other game as well as wild fowl; due to the season of the year game was not as plentiful as hoped but the abundance of trout exceeded all expectations and almost 500 large ones were caught see pp. 54-57. Another impediment to hunting were the "hostile Sioux who were constantly lurking around in great numbers;" it was perhaps prophetic that on September 3 1875 they met and were entertained by General George Armstrong Custer of the 7th Cavalry at Fort Lincoln just nine months before the Battle of Little Big Horn. As befitting "one of the most famous sportsmen in the country" Custer and his wife and sister lived in great state on the post surrounded by the General's hunting trophies of which there were many. Circumstances prevented Strong from retaining the head or hide of the huge leader of a buffalo herd which he shot but the event is described in lively detail. Also noteworthy are the author's splendid descriptions of Yellowstone and the surrounding territory. Many accounts of Yellowstone and the Northwest were to follow but this one in its depiction of the country the sport and the individuals who participated in this early adventure is a gem and equally rare. <br/>A FASCINATING AND SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNT OF FRONTIER SPORT AND EXPLORATION IN THE AMERICAN WEST.
