The Well of Loneliness is a lesbian novel that follows the life of Stephen Gordon an Englishwoman from an upper-class family whose "sexual inversion" is apparent from an early age. The Well of Loneliness was banned for obscenity when published by Jonathan Cape in 1928 in an edition of 1500 copies. The rights to the book were sold to Pegasus Press in Paris where the laws were more favorable to the subject matter. The book eventually became an international bestseller and for decades was the single most famous lesbian novel. The book is an ambitious survey of Black achievement in America exploring the contributions of African Americans to fields such as medicine education politics and the military while forcefully arguing for racial self-sufficiency as a path to equality. Roman contextualizes Black advancement within a broader American framework countering racist narratives that sought to minimize or erase the role of African Americans in shaping the nation. His work aligns with the ethos of early 20th-century racial uplift movements echoing figures like W.E.B. Du Bois in its emphasis on self-determination and intellectual rigor. Roman highlights African American historical figures alongside broader discussions of race and progress. A full-page photograph of Frederick Douglass appears with the caption "Hon. Volume I has some white spots/wear on decorative red page edges. Volume II also has some wear on decorative page edges and top edge of pages has some white spotting from exposure to water at some point. Both volumes come with five woven ribbons that look a little dingy and are a little frayed at the bottom but quite intact still and are overall in pretty good shape. Notes: Josiah Wood Whymper RI 1813 – 1903 was a British wood-engraver book illustrator and watercolourist. Born the son of a brewer Whymper was apprenticed to a stonemason. He soon turned to drawing and painting settled in London in 1829 and studied under William Collingwood Smith 1815–1887. After having an etching of London Bridge published he became well known as an illustrator and worked for Black for the 1857 edition of poetic works of Walter Scott John Murray Cassell and other publishers. His wood-engraving enterprise became one of London's most successful. He also painted watercolours specialising in riverscapes and gave drawing classes to pupils such as Charles Keene 1823–1891 John William North 1842–1924 George John Pinwell 1842–1875 and Frederick Walker 1840–1875. He also produced fine engravings of animals fish landscapes and wonders of the world for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge sold for 3/4d penny plain 2d pence coloured. In 1846 Whymper made thirty engravings about dramatic natural phenomena such as the aurora borealis whirlpools and icebergs.
