The author John W. Lewis 1809-1861 was a fellow Free-Will Baptist minister associated beginning around 1843 with the adventism of William Miller - one of few African American adherents to the Millerite movement. Subtitled "An Adventurous Education 1935-1946" Vanity of Duluoz is a key volume in Jack Kerouac's lifework the series of autobiographical novels he referred to as The Legend of Duluoz. With the same tender humor and intoxicating wordplay he brought to his masterpieces On the Road and The Dharma Bums Kerouac takes his alter ego from the football fields of small-town New England to the playing fields and classrooms of Horace Mann and Columbia out to sea on a merchant freighter plying the sub-infested waters of the North Atlantic during World War II and back to New York where his friends are the writers who would one day become known as the Beat generation and where he published his first novel. Written in 1967 from the vantage point ot the psychedelic sixties Vanity of Duluoz gives a fascinating portrait of the young Kerouac dedicated and disciplined in his determination from an early age to be an important American writer. This set of original illustrations provide splendid specimens for children’s book publishing during the Civil Rights era. “Reggie’s No-Good Bird†is set against the backdrop of “when the biggest troublemaker in the class injures a baby Blue Jay and decides to care for it and raise it he finds himself without the time or interest to get into trouble.†And the illustrations depict young Reggie with his African-American compatriot assessing the injuries to the young “No-Good Bird†and later setting it free. These original art work compositions were rendered for the Franklin Watts edition and repeated with the “Weekly Reader Books†edition book club but were changed to a different cover art illustrator for the 1970 Archway paperback.Berson 1926-1986 was born in Los Angeles served at the end of World War II and was an avid traveler. He graduated from UCLA with a BA in 1953 and spent most of the next two decades traveling in Europe studying art in Paris and then living in Spain France Italy Yugoslavia Turkey North Africa and after 1958 together with his fellow artist & wife Paula Winter Berson 1929-2003. His first illustrated book was “Loretta Mason Potts†by Mary Chase in 1958. He is perhaps best-remembered for his whimsical fairy tale creatures in his Henry Possum Mabel Watts’s “The King and the Whirlybird†“Mother Goose Treasury†“Raminagrobis and the Mice†“King Midas and the Golden Touch†and many others. Tight Near Fine copy lacking the dustwrapper. <br /> <br /> Hay 1895-1968 started his career in print journalism but made his name as a radio personality primarily in Nashville where he was the originator and long-time Master of Ceremonies of the Grand Ole Opry program on WSM from which the venerable live stage variety show at the Ryman Auditorium drew its name. Between musical acts Hay would intersperse comic interludes in the character of "The Solemn Old Judge" a character he had first invented for his column "Howdy Judge" in the Memphis Commercial Appeal. These columns are reproduced here; they are mostly in the form of racist caricature very much drawn from the minstrel show tradition the typical premise being an African-American character appearing in court before a white judge with much white-supremacist hilarity to follow the Black voices written in exaggerated dialect. <br /> <br /> Hay adapted his "Solemn Old Judge" persona to radio along the way establishing the basic character of the popular American "hillbilly" music industry - white southern and racially segregated - that placed country music in direct opposition to the race-mixing socially "degenerate" music of the northern cities especially New York. In the words of sociologist Richard Peterson: "The down home rural card was a good card to play.because there was such fear of what was happening in the cities. There was so much race mixing there was so much jazz there was all kinds of degradation in music. Here was a way of finding a pure unadulterated American music that came out of an Anglo-Saxon background. They Hay and the Grand Ole Opry made up a whole bunch of stuff." quoted in American Public Media "New York Clashes With the Heartland" audio documentary. During the 1950's Bookchin had close ties to the International Komunisten Deutschlands IKD a group of dissident German Marxists based in New York who published a German-language periodical Dinge der Zeit and Contemporary Issues its English-language sister publication. "His earliest book Lebensgefährliche Lebensmittel published in West Germany in collaboration with Gotz Ohly was based on a very large article "The Problem of Chemicals in Food" that had been published in Contemporary Issues in 1952. Here he explored the possible effects of food preservatives and pesticides on human health. Loose as issued with no enclosing envelope. Printed in different color inks on various cardstocks; each with imprint on verso. Together comprising Issues No. 1 & 2 of Merlyn Gorky a short-lived radical left literary-political journal there appear to have been only two numbers issued edited by the feminist poet Susu Jeffrey. The newspaper has a few nicks at the fold; toning to the interior pages; Very Good. Fourteen of the cards are signed a few with inscriptions; two dated May-June 1981. Complete and fine. <br /> <br /> Of particular note is the signed contribution by "Pancho Aguila" - this was the prison pseudonym of notorious poet/criminal Roberto Solis convicted of murder in an armored car heist in 1969 released in 1992 and currently 2018 a fugitive from justice wanted in connection with a $3-million armored-card robbery in 1993. His autograph is uncommon. Issues 1-2 apparently all issued; no. 1 not located in OCLC no. 2 rare with OCLC recording one location only Delaware.
