Scarce second novel by the Michigan-born author set in Lansing and Detroit and chronicling the life of a working-class Michigan girl in middle-class society. Herrmann lived in Paris in the 1920's where he was part of the famous expatriate circle of American writers including his first wife Josephine Herbst. A compilation of Russian "songs of freedom" and revolutionary poems by various authors. Some of the works included here are early printings of Ruzrushennyi Mol' "The Ruined Pier" by Grigorii Gershuni a Russian revolutionary and a founder of the Socialist Revolutionary Party; and Maxim Gorky's Piesnia o Bureviestnikie "The Song of the Stormy Petrel". Undoubtedly however one of the most interesting poems is Fedorushka here erroneously attributed to Leo Tolstoy. The poem was actually written in 1880 by Mikhail Rozengeim for whose poetry the term "liberal accusation" was coined. Tolstoy who disliked this particular poem expressed great displeasure at the incorrect attribution. The mistake was most likely made by the publisher Max N. A very good copy in contemporary full calf with wear to the spine ends otherwise crisp clean and sound quite well-preserved. Errata slip neatly tipped onto the verso of the title page. Volume III only of this mid-18th century English guide to prayers in English and Latin for the use of English Catholics. OCLC attributes authorship to Charles Cordell an influential English Catholic priest academic and bibliophile. Scarce in the trade with few auction records; presumably much scarcer than Anglican volumes from the period given the much smaller population of English Catholics during the period as compared with Anglicans. OCLC records just over a dozen holdings of the whole set. Though an odd volume rather than a whole set a rich text which documents the daily and liturgical prayers and traditions of English Catholics during this period. [no imprint] hardcover

First published in 1840 "Voyage en Icarie" presented in novelistic form the theories of Cabet's Icarian movement in which "society.placed all economic activity under the guidance and control of elected officials and made the family the only other politically influential unit" Richard C.S. Trahair "Utopias and Utopians" 1999 p. 199. By the year of the Revolution of 1848 and the publication of this edition there were some 400000 Icarians in France a handful of whom established a community in Denton County Texas Cabet joining them shortly after in 1850. The Icarians suffered in Texas their numbers far fewer than they had hoped for after the fall of Louis Philippe and the rise of the Second Republic. Furthermore most members chose to reside in New Orleans and the land alloted them was not the million acres they had been promised but two disparate tracts totallying only 10000 acres see Robert S. Fogarty "Dictionary of American Communal and Utopian History" 1980 p. 147. Upon Cabet's arrival in the United States the group now totalling only 200 migrated to Nauvoo Illinois which had recently been evacuated by the Mormons. After a short period of prosperity schisms errupted and by 1856 Cabet and his followers had formed a splinter group moving on to Cheltenham Missouri where Cabet died shortly thereafter. Light wear and dust-soil to extremities with a thin strip of foxing along the right edge and shallow loss to lower right corner tip; Very Good. <br /> <br /> Small advertising poster for The Pictorial Review one of the most prominent women's magazines published in the United States which ran from 1899-1937 before merging with The Delineator. During its early years the magazine published a substantial amount of advertorial content but when Arthur T. Vance of the Woman's Home Companion came on as editor in 1907 he brought controversial new writers like Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Rheta Child Door to the magazine who touched on key social issues. This poster for the February 1910 issue heralds the publication of "Do We Want the Suffragette" "What the Public-Spirited Woman Can Do and How She Can Do It" and "How To Be A Milliner" along with 18pp of new fashions. Tiny loss at upper right corner 2" closed tear at upper margin near Gilman's portrait with one small ink spot; Very Good. <br /> <br /> Promotional broadside for lectures by Gilman who was much in demand as a public speaker. The broadside opens with text distinguishing Gilman as one of "the twelve greatest living American Women" according to Carrie Chapman Catt and supplies both biographical details and those about her literary career. "Mrs. Gilman is widely known as a feminist but deprecates that term claiming that her interest is in humanity and in women only because their previous debasement has retarded the upward movement of us all." While the broadside was issued by the promotional company who managed her the appearance of her personal address at the lower margin suggests the possibility that Gilman may have written the text herself. The lyrics encapsulate some of the many reasons that men and women were against women gaining the right to vote:<br /> <br /> "Work for the "cause" No time to pause Tell all the men that you know<br /> Why should a few Rule over you Suffrage is ev'ry man's foe<br /> Beautiful flower Sign of the hour If the Jonquil wants to fight <br /> You cannot fall You're the Queen of them all Emblem of Truth and Right"<br /> <br /> Anti-suffrage organizations like the Women's Anti-Suffrage Association of Boston cited many reasons for their position including that women did not want the burden of the vote that women were already busy with caring for homes and families and that women were not capable of making astute political decisions. The Ballad of John De Rue apparently unpublished narrates a dream of John De Rue spending a Christmas night in the rubble of a Cathedral during World War II. The water colored initials are military motifs including a sword grenade bugle bomb and grenade launcher. No date location or provenance found regarding the author or "John De Rue" for this unique hand written illustrated poem. n/a unknown

Each volume bound in matching contemporary full speckled calf with four green ribbon markers all of which are present. The spines are matching with six compartments and five raised bands. In one compartment of each volume is the name of the season the four "secular" seasons rather than the seasons of the Christian Kalendar and in a second compartment is the title "Missel de Paris" in gilt lettering. The remaining compartments have extensive gilt decoration. Gilt decoration along the edges of the boards. Each volume has contemporary hand-marbled endpapers. All page edges are gilt. Each volume has occasional and unobtrusive library stamps of Bibliotheca Pusieana Oxon. and library markings on the front endpapers and there is the expected shelf wear to the edges and corners with a few small losses. The interior of the volumes is otherwise bright and clean and free of significant marking soiling or staining. The movement the members of which were often associated with the University of Oxford argued for the recovery of traditional aspects of the Christian faith subsequently lost and their inclusion into Anglican liturgy and theology and conceived of the Anglican Church as one of three branches of the Catholic Church.
