Original printed wrappers; 367 1 pp. Very light wear to wrappers; private inventory number and a few ink spots to title and front wrapper; else Very Good; text uncut and unopened. <br /> <br /> Women and Economics generally considered Gilman's most important theoretical work described by one historian as "the first real substantial contribution made by a woman to the science of economics" first appeared in Boston in 1898; by 1911 no fewer than eight foreign translations had been published including editions in Hungarian 1906 Polish 1909 and Japanese 1911. Of the two contemporary Russian editions this by Andrei Vasil'evich Kamenskii was the first; it was followed in less than a year by a competing translation by one M. Mamurovskii about whom we can discover very little. Kamenskii 1843-1914 trained as an engineer was also a prolific translator and biographer; he wrote at least six entries for Florenty Pavlenkov's massive biographical dictionary Жизнь замечательных людей "Lives of Remarkable People" begun in 1890 and still being updated in the 21st century. As Pavlenkov was also the publisher behind the current work it makes sense that Kamenskii already on his payroll would have undertaken the translation. <br /> <br /> Kamenskii's Preface to this volume provides insight to the reception of Gilman's ideas - and to the topic of feminism more generally - in pre-Revolutionary Russia. Kamenskii does not stint in his praise for the theoretical importance of the book praising the author's ".inimitable simplicity and clarity and.amazing logical force;" noting that ".the author examines the abnormal economic situation of women with all of its negative consequences not as a woman's question but above all from the point of view of social evolution - as a human question." Yet in an earlier passage Kamenskii takes pains to ground his subject as a relatably "feminine" - and perhaps less threatening - figure: ".Stetson is still a relatively young and good looking woman. In addition to her literary gifts and enormous erudition she has other more modest talents. She draws well she is an excellent dressmaker and in addition and excellent and in a pinch can substitute for the domestic help." <br /> <br /> Extremely uncommon. Beautifully bound by Charles Francois Capé in blue morocco lavishly decorated in gilt with the monogram "A.M." at each corner of the covers spine with five raised bands compartments richly decorated and second compartment lettered in gilt cream silk endpapers all edges gilt. On front free endpaper is stamped in gilt "M.J.F. 27 Juin 1861". The following leaf has the inscription "A Madlle i.e. mademoiselle. Marie Fontaine Souvenir de relieur Capé 31 December 1859". Bound in before the title page is an exquisite Gothic Revival illuminated manuscript on vellum recording the marriage of Marie Rose Jean-Fontaine to Ludovic Haverna on 11 May 1869. This is written in red and black with decoration drawn in blue and red highlights in thickly applied gold leaf. A gorgeous little prayer book and missal in immaculate condition. Capé 1806-1867 began his working life as a porter at the Louvre while learning the art of bookbinding in the museum library. In 1848 he established his bindery in Rue Dauphine where he carried out for work for distinguished clients as well as building his own fine book collection. This charming work was clearly done for friends given the warm inscription. And the insertion of the beautiful illuminated leaf shows that the book was unsurprisingly much treasured by Marie Fontaine throughout her life.</p> Paris: Morizot, Libraire-Editeur.� n.d. In addition to the work of Spiegelman and Mouly RAW featured cutting-edge comic artists such as Robert Crumb Gary Panter Charles Burns Kim Deitch Sue Coe Jerry Moriarty Richard Sala and Ever Meulen among many others. In these issues of RAW one will find Gary Panter's best-known comic protagonist "Jimbo" a burly punk and existential adventurer as well as "The Voice of Walking Flesh" by Charles Burns "Love's Savage Fury" by Mark Newgarden and a centerfold by Ever Meulen captioned "Use the Mood of the Past to Rewire Your Brain for the Future." Of significant importance is the fact that Art Spiegelman's seminal graphic work "Maus: A Survivor's Tale" made it's first appearance in this magazine chapters 2-7 are present here as stapled-in booklets. A largely autobiographical work charting Algren's own Depression-era wanderings while riding the rails between El Paso Texas and Chicago Illinois. "A story of jobless youth and their disillusionment. First Editions. Folio. A three volume graphzine from Roman Cieslewicz; the Polish-French graphic artist who worked in the photomontage tradition of John Heartfield in rather parallel fashion to Barbara Kruger. Where Kruger was trained in paste-ups at Mademoiselle Cieslewicz worked for Vogue and Elle. His "Panic News Review" was a kind of late-20th century doomscroll unfolding across two decades with stark compositions imaging both political atrocities and celebrity culture; from Nixon Hitler Milošević and Yeltsin to Madonna Maradona Muhammad Ali and Barrry White. Cieslewicz's designs accompanied by texts and illustrations from the likes of David Bailey Christian Boltanski Marie-Laure de Decker and Roland Topor.
