Both title pages are fully engraved each with a vignette showing Cupid sharing tales with Boccaccio as women wait on the veranda of a house in the background. Italian text. 8vo. 205 mm. Wide margined; uncut; deckle edges. Some slight age stain. Old tape repair at frontis hinge. No front free fly-leaf. Early vellum backed marbled boards binding. An attractive if mis-leading edition. The Decameron is a collection of novellas by Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio 1313-1375. It is a 14th-century medieval allegory told as a frame story encompassing 100 tales by ten young people. Boccaccio probably began composing the work in 1350 and finished it in 1351 or 1353. The bawdy tales of love in The Decameron range from the erotic to the tragic. Tales of wit practical jokes and life lessons contribute to the mosaic. In addition to its literary import it documents life in 14th-century Italy - From Wiki. A false imprint - Because of its sometimes erotic nature printers and publishers were often loathe to claim the Decameron as their own. Therefore 'Amsterdamo' appears in the imprint of this edition. It was not printed in Amsterdam but almost certainly in Venice by Antonio Locatelli. There are several similar but different editions. They are identified by examination of the occasional ornaments and a notice at the very end of volume two which in our example reads: "Si Vende Lire Venti Venete." Sell this for 20 pounds. A good copy the blue watered silk covers are faded around the the edges on four volumes and on the remaining volume 4th vol. the whole front cover is faded the vellum is a bit soiled on all volumes and there is a bookplate on the paste-down endpaper of each volume. The top edges are gilt. The frontispiece and the nine original etchings are clean and nearly all other text pages are clean. On the title page this is called the Mary Rose Randall edition. There were probably 26 six copies which contained eleven hand-lettered or illuminated initials. This is NOT one of those copies. The space is present for the initial but it is blank. Elegantly bound in full straight grain morocco with gilt detailing. An English translation of this important piece of early Italian literature written by Italian poet author and Renaissance humanist Giovanni Boccaccio. Boccaccio's work consists of a frame narrative containing one hundred tales told by a group sheltering in a secluded villa to escape the Black Death. Boccaccio probably conceived of the Decameron after the plague epidemic of 1348 and completed it by 1353.Illustrated with a frontispiece to volume I. Bound in full straight grain morocco with gilt detailing. Externally very good with some rubbing to the joints and extremities. Slight loss loss to the backstrip head of IV and a touch to III. Binding by George Bayntun marked on the upper left corner of the verso of the front flyleaf. Six compartment spine with five slightly raised ribs. Black leather label with gilt title in compartment 2; green leather label with illustrator in compartment three. Gilt borders rulings and dentelle on the spine. Gilt double line border and dentelle edges on the front and back boards. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Half title present. Text block shows slight age toning to the edges but overall it is clean bright unmarked and square with a strong binding. The spine and boards have mild shelf wear but the gilt ornamentation is still bright and whole. Slight creases along the spine and hinges but the leather is still subtle. The inscription "850.2" has been written in the first compartment on the spine in marker. A very bright and handsome copy in very good condition. Garden City Publishing Company unknown
