1783242998Dezauche 1783. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19.75 x 25.5". Sheet measures 21.5 x 30".

This map of Canada and the northern United States extends north from around the latitude of Baltimore all the way up to Baffin Bay along the shore of Greenland. Published by Jean-Claude Dezuache in 1783 it is the eighth revision of a map originally published by De L'Isle in 1703. The map is notable as the first to include "Etats-Unis" in the title coming as it did on the heels of the American Revolution. In fact this appearance is one of the earliest appearances of the name United States Etats-Unis on a printed map. The map is compelling in its accuracy particularly with regard to the Great Lakes depicting them as fully enclosed and properly placed in longitude and latitude. There is also excellent detail around the Hudson and Mississippi Rivers. The elaborate cartouche is decorated with a beaver natives one of whom is bearing a scalp and Jesuit explorers. Furthermore the fleurs-de-lis that previously adorned the shield at the top of the cartouche has been erased and the crown converted into a halo suspended above an orb a response to the execution of the king following the French Revolution Below a table of colors delineates the boundaries of the United States and European possessions. Indian nations are also labeled. The map is in excellent condition with wide margins as issued. Guillaume De L'Isle 1675--1726 was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas and Africa. He is important as the first "scientific" cartographer who incorporated the most current information on exploration and topography into his maps. Philippe Buache 1700--1773 was a student of De L'Isle and became one of the most active proponents of the so-called school of theoretical cartography active in mid-18th century France. This map is fascinating record from a remarkable moment in North American history.

Dezauche unknown

1784102511784. Engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on laid paper with watermark. In excellent condition with the exception of some very light foxing in the right margin. Image size: 15 x 11 7/8 inches. A fantastic proof before letters of this decorative Rococo print of a happy couple the morning after their wedding.

Genre painting came back into favor when the Academy admitted Watteau's "The Pilgrimage to Cythera" to its ranks in 1717. From that point on a fashion for decorative subjects swept the country influencing an entire generation of French artists. This craze for intimate boudoir scenes did not subside until after the onset of the Revolution when the frivolous tastes of the aristocratic elite were dispelled and a more sober era descended upon French art. This print is a wonderful example of French Rococo tastes. The picture is set in a sumptuous bedroom the morning after a young aristocratic couple's wedding. The young bride sits on her father's lap while he speaks with his new son-in-law. Two chambermaids ready her toiletries while another closes the curtains on the marriage bed. This beautiful print is the pendant picture to Pierre Antoine Baudouin's "Le Coucher de la Mariee" which depicts the young newlyweds retiring to bed on their wedding night. Baudouin's painting was engraved by Moreau le jeune and finished by F. P. Simonet. Dugoure's frivolous scene is beautifully engraved by Triere creating a truly captivating image which epitomizes the grand era of French Rococo art.

Nevill French Prints of the Eighteenth Century p. 135. unknown books

179713514London: Published by P. J. de Loutherbourg and Sold by V. & R. Green No 14 Percy Street Bedford Square 1797. Coloured aquatint. Printed on wove paper watermarked 1794. In excellent condition. Image size: 9 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches. A wonderful early separately published impression of Loutherbourg's celebrated image of fishermen on Brighton Beach.

This delicate aquatint is an early separately published state of a print which was later included in Phillip Jacques Loutherbourg's seminal work "Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain." The print which was re-engraved in 1801 by J. C. Stadler was enlarged and re-titled "Brighthelmstone Fishermen Returning." This early example of Loutherbourg's work wonderfully shows his skill as an artist. The composition and arrangement of the image provides a fluidity to the picture that is truly compelling and demonstrates Loutherbourg's abilities as a draftsman. The son of a court painter in Darmstadt the versatile artist Philippe Jacques Loutherbourg was born in Fulda Germany and was a pupil of J. H. Tischbein and Carle Vanloo and Francis Casanova the elder in Paris. His romantic landscapes battle scenes portraits and biblical subjects were highly esteemed and lauded by influential colleagues such as Diderot. He frequently exhibited at the Salon and became a venerated member of the Académie Royale in 1767. In 1771 he moved to England where he was employed as the principal scenery designer at London's Drury Lane Theatre. His creative and minutely detailed sets revolutionized the genre of scene painting and he soon began dabbling in costume design. Loutherbourg once again astounded contemporaries in 1782 with his pioneering invention of the "Eidophusikon" a novel variety of moving panorama that was accompanied by music. His substantial and varied oeuvre also included book illustrations and a series of aquatints of British scenery that was published in 1801 and 1805. Aside from a brief trip to Switzerland in 1782 he remained in London for the duration of his life and became heavily engrossed in mysticism. Published by P. J. de Loutherbourg, and Sold by V. & R. 174791802n. l.: s. n. 1747. Fine. s. n. n. l. 1747 10 x 16.8 cm Relié First edition of this work published by the Société du Bout-du-Banc the celebrated literary salon presided over by Mademoiselle Jeanne-Françoise Quinault and the Comte de Caylus. This intimate circle originally comprising eight members would gather on Mondays at dinner to exchange ideas and to write; at the close of each meal every distinguished guest was required to set down a few lines whether in the coarse poissard style or in a more refined vein on paper. It was in this context that Les Fêtes roulantes ou les regrets des petites rues came into being in the wake of the celebrations held in Paris in honour of the Dauphin's second marriage to Marie-Josèphe de Saxe. Pastiche binding in plum half-shagreen spine with five raised bands framed by gilt dotted fillets and six compartments decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons marbled paper boards gilt top edge pastedowns and endpapers in shell-pattern marbled paper. Some minor rubbing to the paper of the lower board corners slightly bumped. ""In his youth the Comte de Caylus had paid considerable tribute to the literature of fairy tales which the translations from Arabic and Persian by Galland and Pétis de la Croix had brought into fashion; one does not find him again in these artificial creations to which he returned when he was nearly seventy. But in the intervening years his character as a writer emerged and declared itself in accordance with his manners and tastes and in how propitious a milieu! The Société du bout du banc that academy of Gallic ribaldry presided over by Mademoiselle Quinault; those suppers at which an inkwell served as centrepiece and which La Chaussée d'Armenonville Voisenon Moncrif the Grand Prior of Vendôme Duclos Salley and Crébillon fils enlivened with their bawdy and bantering wit. All men of letters with little taste for philosophy all content to let the world go its own way and finding it perfectly satisfactory as it was all of that sacred flock of Epicurus somewhat transformed by Circe in which each member is satisfied or very nearly with what their presiding lady declared sufficient for Duclos the least fastidious among them. The popular literature of the eighteenth century that is to say literature which took the common people as the subject of its observations and tableaux was born within this company of mirth and folly and the Comte de Caylus was its natural father and its foster father; it took its first lively flights in those ""Écosseuses"" 1739 those ""Étrennes de la Saint-Jean"" 1742 those ""Mémoires de l'Académie des colporteurs"" those ""Avantures des bals des Bois"" those ""Fêtes roulantes"" 1748 a veritable magic lantern of Parisian popular life ."" An essential work engendering modern history Commynes' work which moreover establishes a rule of political conduct for the Great ones of the kingdom forms the greatest source for this period. From 1472 to 1483 after having been counselor to the Duke of Burgundy Charles the Bold Commynes entered the service of Louis XI then of Charles VIII and Louis XII. He distinguished himself there through his diplomatic talents notably in Italy; consequently the Memoirs are also a history of Europe. Too often forgotten is that his exemplary career experienced an interlude of disgrace: opposing the young Charles VIII through his liberal ideas he rallied to the cause of the future Louis XII plot aimed at abducting Charles VIII. He was consequently arrested and locked in an iron cage at Loches for five months in 1488. To this day the work still being studied Commynes' Memoirs have never failed in success and interest. Denys Godefroy's critical edition replaced the one that had served as reference until then Savage's version. This edition contains La chronique scandaleuse the proofs and observations Addition à l'histoire de Louis XI by Charles Naudé Le cabinet du roi Louis XI by Tristan L'Hermite L'éloge du roi Charles VIII by Brantôme Comparaison du règne du roi Louis XII à celui du roi Louis XI by Claude de Seissel Chronicles of the Dukes of Burgundy Remarks on the history of King Louis XI by Varillas.
