2005160172Toulouse: Universite de Toulouse 2005. Softcover. All VG. Doctoral thesis. 3 volumes identically bound with acetate covers and black cloth spines. 1157 pages across the 3 volumes. Volume I: 428 pp. with no illustrations the main thesis. Volume II: pp. 429 - 1019; documents appendices bw photos. Volume III: The works of Villon listed and pictured. The works studied constitute the period from 1947 to 1963. It retains 943 letters from Villon to Espic and attached documents: biographical historiographic theoretical. The letters and documents are reproduced in the 2nd volume. These sources contribute to a better understanding of the production of the artist as a whole. The first part deals with the correspondence the guiding thread. Analysis description and methodological propositions are stated and lead to a reflection on the relations between the epistolary and the "writings of artists". Next comes a monographic study. The great stylistic passages of the graphic and painted work are studied. The role of Villon in cubism the "Golden Section" is reconsidered. The transition to abstraction and the return to figuration around 1935 are evaluated. After 1945 Villon's representative abstraction embodies the reassuring values of a traditional French painting supported by the art market and the institutions of the Fourth Republic. The Approbation dated 8 August 1697 is followed by a royal privilege dated January 1698 to an anonymous libraire who soon after transferred the privilege to the Royal Printer Jean-Baptiste Coignard II. Coignard finished the printing on 23 December 1699. The book's sober undecorated covers the mark of the so-called janséniste style open to reveal exuberantly colored German floral endpapers. The pattern was printed either in negative relief with the motifs in intaglio so that the "gold" leaf actually a mixture of brass and an alloy of copper tin zinc and sometimes lead appears as the ground as here; or in positive relief usually showing the patterns in gold on a colored ground. The colors were applied successively using stencils usually cut in oiled paper or in thin metal sheets. Cf. C. Kopylov Papiers dorés d'Allemagne au siècle des Lumières 2012 pp. 17-19. 1784102511784. Engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on laid paper with watermark. In excellent condition with the exception of some very light foxing in the right margin. Image size: 15 x 11 7/8 inches. A fantastic proof before letters of this decorative Rococo print of a happy couple the morning after their wedding.

Genre painting came back into favor when the Academy admitted Watteau's "The Pilgrimage to Cythera" to its ranks in 1717. From that point on a fashion for decorative subjects swept the country influencing an entire generation of French artists. This craze for intimate boudoir scenes did not subside until after the onset of the Revolution when the frivolous tastes of the aristocratic elite were dispelled and a more sober era descended upon French art. This print is a wonderful example of French Rococo tastes. The picture is set in a sumptuous bedroom the morning after a young aristocratic couple's wedding. The young bride sits on her father's lap while he speaks with his new son-in-law. Two chambermaids ready her toiletries while another closes the curtains on the marriage bed. This beautiful print is the pendant picture to Pierre Antoine Baudouin's "Le Coucher de la Mariee" which depicts the young newlyweds retiring to bed on their wedding night. Baudouin's painting was engraved by Moreau le jeune and finished by F. P. Simonet. Dugoure's frivolous scene is beautifully engraved by Triere creating a truly captivating image which epitomizes the grand era of French Rococo art.

Nevill French Prints of the Eighteenth Century p. 135. unknown books
179713514London: Published by P. J. de Loutherbourg and Sold by V. & R. Green No 14 Percy Street Bedford Square 1797. Coloured aquatint. Printed on wove paper watermarked 1794. In excellent condition. Image size: 9 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches. A wonderful early separately published impression of Loutherbourg's celebrated image of fishermen on Brighton Beach.

This delicate aquatint is an early separately published state of a print which was later included in Phillip Jacques Loutherbourg's seminal work "Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain." The print which was re-engraved in 1801 by J. C. Stadler was enlarged and re-titled "Brighthelmstone Fishermen Returning." This early example of Loutherbourg's work wonderfully shows his skill as an artist. The composition and arrangement of the image provides a fluidity to the picture that is truly compelling and demonstrates Loutherbourg's abilities as a draftsman. The son of a court painter in Darmstadt the versatile artist Philippe Jacques Loutherbourg was born in Fulda Germany and was a pupil of J. H. Tischbein and Carle Vanloo and Francis Casanova the elder in Paris. His romantic landscapes battle scenes portraits and biblical subjects were highly esteemed and lauded by influential colleagues such as Diderot. He frequently exhibited at the Salon and became a venerated member of the Académie Royale in 1767. In 1771 he moved to England where he was employed as the principal scenery designer at London's Drury Lane Theatre. His creative and minutely detailed sets revolutionized the genre of scene painting and he soon began dabbling in costume design. Loutherbourg once again astounded contemporaries in 1782 with his pioneering invention of the "Eidophusikon" a novel variety of moving panorama that was accompanied by music. His substantial and varied oeuvre also included book illustrations and a series of aquatints of British scenery that was published in 1801 and 1805. Aside from a brief trip to Switzerland in 1782 he remained in London for the duration of his life and became heavily engrossed in mysticism. Published by P. J. de Loutherbourg, and Sold by V. & R.
