Commines has been called "the first critical and philosophical historian since classical times" Oxford Companion to English Literature principally for his shrewd and practical insight into the political realities of his day his psychological insight and his forthright account of the machinations of the politicians he described. His history is divided into 8 books the first six of which deal with the reign of Louis XI; the last two deal with the Italian wars of Charles VIII ending with his death

Thomas Danett's English translation was first published in 1596. In his dedication to Lord Burghley dated 1 Nov. 1596 Danett states that thirty years before he presented Lord Burghley and "the late Earle of Leicester my Lord" his 'historie of Commines rudely translated into our vulgar toong' and that he later revised and enlarged his translation at the request of Sir Christopher Hatton. According to the DNB Danett fl. 1566-1601 was also the author of the following works: "1. The Description of the Low Countreys and of the Prouinces thereof gathered into an Epitome out of the Historie of Lodouico Guicchardini' London 1593 dedicated to Lord Burghley. 2. 186413458Paris: Dusacq & Cie. Editeurs 1864. Hand-coloured lithograph after a painting by Linder. Very good condition apart from some mild rippling a small loss in the top margin and a few skillfully repaired tears in the bottom margin. A beautifully coloured humorous plate that was most likely part of a series published by Dusacq of images by various artists depicting railway related scenes.

During the mid-nineteenth century the technological advancement and financial prosperity of France under Napoleon III hastened the development of the railway and other modern modes of transportation such as the omnibus. These improvements brought about a culture of mass tourism as members of various classes flocked to the railroad to take day trips. An archetypal symbol of modern life the railway station became a popular subject during the period and was represented and parodied by artists such as Honoré Daumier and William Powell Frith. It was an ideal place to observe a varied cross-section of society and the idiosyncrasies of human behavior. In the tradition of Daumier's satiric railway scenes from the 1840s and 1850s Linder exploits the comic possibilities of this bustling modern subject in this charming print. The title 'Pleasure Train' was most likely intended as an ironic play on words since pleasure is the last thing enjoyed by the swelling crowd of people on the platform many of whom scream in frustration as they are pushed and prodded in an effort to exit and enter the train. A pupil of the celebrated artist Charles Gleyre Philippe Jacques Linder was a genre and portrait painter who regularly exhibited works at the Salon between 1857-1880.

Cf. Browning to text a few margins notes shaved but a good copy.

La Mort de Cyrus is a tragic-comedy is based one of the early French novels of the period especially that of Le Grand Cyrus of Madeline de Scudery ten vols. 1649-53 which was taken from the histories Herodotus and Xenophon. Quinault's play was substantially changed by altering Cyrus' attitude toward the queen and by staging the death of the three leading characters not two as in the histories. The play revolves around Cyrus' love for Tomiris who is forced to marry her general Odartise; otherwise Odartise will kill Cyrus. When the revenge plot unfolds Tomoris is unable to murder Odartise but Cyrus does.

In terms of theatrical form Quinault's tragedy is an early example of the tragic-comedy genre perfected by Thomas Corneille with his Berenice and Darius which were also based on French novels of the period. Quinault along with Thomas Corneille occupied an important place in the history of French drama between the zenith of Pierre Corneille and the rise of Racine. His early tragedies have not lasted compared to his operas to which he devoted himself after 1670. Quinault wrote libretti for the composer Jean Baptiste Lully and is credited with the introduction of dramatic action into the 17th French opera. According to two well-known 20th century critics Barnwell and Lancaster Quinault's La Mort de Cyrus influenced two of Jean Racine's works: Alexandre le Grand 1666 and also Andromaque 1667. According to Barnwell Racine's "Alexandre le Grand 1666 is a concession to contemporary fashion and constitutes a good example of the Romanesque tragedy in vogue when Racine was beginning to write for the theatre: superficially it has much in common with Thomas Corneille's Timocrate 1667 the greatest immediate success of the century and with Quinault's even more improbable but highly successful Mort de Cyrus 1658." Concerning Andromaque 1667 Lancaster wonders aloud: "Had not Racine become aware by then that the original version of his tragedy in which Andromaque's reappearance may derive from such plays as Quinault's La Mort de Cyrus weakened the obsessive hold of her own legendary past over his heroine Such considerations would reinforce Dr Elliot's contention that Andromaque in its original form is rooted in contemporary dramatic conventions."

References: Barnwell H.T.
