Desportes' poetry was durably influenced and shaped by Italian literature. The author indeed returns to France after a journey to Italy where he underwent the influence of Petrarch - his first poems are moreover criticized as neo-Petrarchan. His first book appeared in a collective collection and gathered his poetry imitated from Ariosto. His clear frank mannerist and refined poetry court poetry eclipsed that of Ronsard at the court of Henri III. It was in turn criticized and replaced by that of Malherbe. Desportes' literature nonetheless constitutes an important aspect of Renaissance poetry. Chez Mamert Patisson hardcover

Caylus 1692-1765 was an amateur engraver antiquarian and writer from a well-off aristocratic family which allowed him to follow his lifelong interest in the arts and antiquities. He played a prominent role in the Société du Bout du Banc an informal group of writers and aristocrats who met at the home of the actress Quinault. They published a whole series of oeuvres badins licentious and playful stories mostly published under Caylus' name and in fact mostly written by him. This appears to be in the same vein a collection of histories and sketches relating to the exploits and experiences of book pedlars and hawkers. Each anecdote is illustrated with an appealing and competent engraving executed possibly by Caylus himself. The particularly attractive engraved title showing a billposter putting up a poster or placard with the title and partly obscuring it in the process is according to Cohen possibly by Ch. N. Cochin.

The work is also interesting in that the section beginning on p. 188 Le Malebosse describes and illustrates a scheming poet i.e. Voltaire who is duped by a fake book pedlar. This is in fact one of the first anti-Voltaire caricatures Apgar.

Cioranescu XVIII 16265; Cohen c 210; see Apgar Trois siècles d'iconographie voltairienne.

With Andre Breton Soupault was one of the founders of the Surrealist movement: "Soupault's earliest verse collection 'Aquarium' 1917 was published with the help of Guillaume Apollinaire who introduced Soupault to André Breton. In 1919 Soupault Breton and Louis Aragon cofounded the review 'Littérature'. Originally drawn to the anti-rationalism of the Dada movement Soupault soon rejected its nihilism and he and Breton experimented with other revolutionary techniques. One result of their experimentation was the "automatic writing" of the jointly authored 'Les Champs magnétiques' 1920; 'The Magnetic Fields' known as the first major Surrealist work. Soupault soon abandoned automatic writing to produce carefully crafted verses such as those in 'Westwego' 1922 and 'Georgia' 1926. As the Surrealist movement became increasingly dogmatic and political Soupault grew dissatisfied with it and eventually broke with it and Breton" Encyclopedia Britannica online. Second Edition of the memoirs of one of the most eminent members of the French protestant party at the end of the sixteenth century. These memoirs begin with his narrow escape from the Massacre of St. Bartholomew in 1572 and his taking up arms for the Huguenots in 1575. Shortly thereafter he entered the service of Henri of Navarre who employed him in important negotiations. One of his most significant achievements was the role which he played in the reconciliation of Henri III and the King of Navarre in 1589 for which he was rewarded with the government of Saumur. He became a member of Henri IV's council and retained the monarch's favour after the latter had abjured his religion. Two further volumes of memoirs covering the period 1600-1623 were published by Elzevier at Amsterdam in 1651-52. Brunet III 1912. cfGoldsmith BM STC French M1495. Description: "Adolf Loos 1870-1933 was a Viennese architect known for his radical building facades. Author Ralf Bock reveals the sensuality of Loos's interior designs demonstrating that Loos was not an architect of the "white modern movement" but rather he fought against it. A careful analysis of Loos's ideology and oeuvre this book features 30 existing projects in 160 extraordinary full-color images by the celebrated French photographer Philippe Ruault who has completely rephotographed Loos's works. These new images offer different interpretations of Loos' interiors and bring him back to the center of contemporary architectural debate. The color photographs are supplemented by archival photos from the Loos Archive of the Albertina Vienna and a completely new set of project drawings." -- with a bonus offer-- . Skira hardcover
