Written at the outset of the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War 17801784 triggered by the early recognition of American independence by the United Provinces this pamphlet seeks to highlight the weaknesses of the administration of the Dutch East India Company and the vulnerability of its possessions to a French or British attack.In fact hostilities quickly turned to the disadvantage of the Dutch who in 1784 were compelled to make numerous colonial concessions following the Treaty of Paris. Philippe Fermin or Firmin 17201790 was a colonial physician who spent most of his life in Suriname which he famously described but he also published on various other colonial subjects.A disbound copy presented in a modern temporary marbled paper wrapper; page 13 has been slightly trimmed resulting in the loss of a letter at the end of certain words; a few light spots of foxing. s. n. unknown
17304557N/A: N/A 1730. A lovely manuscript copy of this selection of Royal ordinances attributed to Andre Barrigue de Montvalon. This work existed only in copied manuscript form from 1724 to 1752 when it was finally published. Our copy is an early manuscript. Attractive manuscript title with a coat of arms beneath. It appears to show the arms of a Marquis. The work contains the Royal Laws along with the commentary of Philippe Bornier. The author is quite critical of Bornier's work and corrects his errors and dating. As stated in the preface content in red ink refers to Bornier's work. Dates of ordinances are indicated in side notes. There are also two tables. One shows them in chronological order. The other in alphabetical. Text is throughout in a neat French secretarial hand. This work is almost identical to a 1728 version found in the Bibliotheque de Droit Schuman in Aix-en-Provence and a slightly earlier 1724 edition currently on sale in the USA. Our copy is slightly enlarged as BOUND IN is a lovely genealogical tree of the French Royal family and 8 pages 4 leaves of a red and black list of the kings and their significant dates. Condition. The full leather period binding is in good strong condition with just a little rubbing and slight loss to the head of the spine. Attractive gilt decoration and titles to spine. Marbled end papers. Internally the pages are in good clean condition with just a touch of movement to the binding. The final gathers with the genealogical details are slightly cracked to the binding and "sit proud" of the rest of the text block. Overall in excellent condition. Collation: 236 7 1 8 1 ff. / 472 ordinances & indexes 14 blank 2 ruled only 16 genealogies 1 1 blank pages. 170 by 110mm 6¾ by 4¼ inches. Conforms to Worldcat OCLC Number: 18455885. Barrigue de Montvalon was a legal advisor to the Parlement of Provence. He was sent to defend the King physically when a disputed broke out between the parlement and the court at Aixes. He was a great supporter of the Jesuits. Barrigue lived to the age of 101. P. Girard noting his devotion said of him that he "knew only the Palace and retirement. A long life is the reward of good morals". Bornier was an Advisor to the King serving as a counselor to the king and lieutenant principal at the présidial court of the city. . Titre manuscrit attrayant avec des armoiries en dessous. Il semble qu'il s'agisse des armoiries d'un marquis. L'ouvrage contient les lois royales ainsi que le commentaire de Philippe Bornier. Notre exemplaire est légèrement plus grand car il contient un bel arbre généalogique de la famille royale française et 8 pages 4 feuilles d'une liste rouge et noire des rois et de leurs dates significatives. Condition. La reliure d'époque en plein cuir est en bon état solide avec juste un peu de frottement et une légère perte à la tête de la colonne vertébrale. La décoration et les titres dorés au dos sont attrayants. Papiers de fin marbrés. L'intérieur des pages est en bon état propre avec juste un peu de mouvement à la reliure. Les derniers feuillets avec les détails généalogiques sont légèrement fendus à la reliure et se détachent du reste du bloc de texte. Dans l'ensemble l'ouvrage est en excellent état. A few spots. <br/><br/>Originally issued by Guillaume Delisle in 1722 this was one of the most popular maps of the Western Hemisphere in the 18th century and was printed in numerous editions. This is the important seventh state of the map notable because it depicts the mythical "Sea of the West" north of California. An inset in the top left features Buache's elaborate Northwest Passage theories including a conjectural Lac de Valasco. In Labrador is another hypothetical inland sea Mer Nouvellement Decouverte. In South America Brazil is separated from the Pays des Amazones. The map is decorated with a garland-draped title cartouche "Avertissement" cartouche and compass rose. Querard IV 614 - Playfair n° 220 - Chadenat n° 896 later edition first published in English in 1725.<br /><br />This work is an influential description of Algeria first published in 1725 in French and expanded here with a detailed list of 73 Dutch ships captured by Algerian pirates. Algeria was at this time nominally ruled by the Ottoman Empire but retained a great deal of independence in practice. The work begins with a description of the various inhabitants including separate chapters on the Arabic and Turkish populations followed by chapters on its architecture military navy politics slavery trade etc. It was written by the Jacques Philippe Laugier de Tassy a former diplomat in Algeria and at this date commissioner of the French navy and consul in the Netherlands. It was translated into English as A complete history of the piratical states of Barratry a title that emphasized the notorious Algerian pirates. "Barbary" was not always a unified political entity. From the 16th century on wards it was divided into the political entities of the Regency of Algiers Tunis and Tripolitania Tripoli. Major rulers during the times of the Barbary states' plundering parties included the Pasha or Dey of Algiers the Bey of Tunis and the Bey of Tripoli. Before then the territory was usually divided between Ifriqiya Morocco and a west-central Algerian state centered on Tlemcen or Tiaret. Powerful Berber dynasties such as the Almohads 12th century and briefly thereafter the Hafsids occasionally unified it for short periods. From a European perspective its "capital" or chief city was often considered to be Tripoli in modern-day Libya although Marrakesh in Morocco was the largest and most important Berber city at the time. Spines have gilt lettering cracking to joints tears and chipping. Volume 2 spine is partially detached with the tail end torn away. Boards have mild rubbing wear and peeling chipping and moderate wear to extremities. Mild to moderate bumping to corners in some cases exposing the boards. Textblocks have marbled endpapers light age toning light stains scattered throughout and speckling to edges. Some of the end papers appears to have a line of adhesive near the spine which partially attaches the free end pages to the marbled pages. Volume 1 front marbled endpapers are partially attached has a pen inscription on the front free end page and light to moderate adhesive stains on the edges of pages 429-432. Volume 2 has light to moderate adhesive stains on the edges of the title page and pages 547-549. Volume 3 has light to moderate adhesive stains on the edges of the title page and pages 531-533. Text appears complete however volumes 2 and 3 contain half-title pages which volume 1 lacks. Text in Greek and Latin. Written by Pierre Philippe Alyon a French medical botanist and prolific author on scientific subjects. A smart set bound in contemporary quarter calf bindings. A scarce edition of this work. To the preface Alyon notes that he first composed this guide to chemistry for the children of the former Duke of Orleans to whom he was responsible for teaching chemistry. His original textbook was written in 1786. To this edition he has made some alterations and has updated certain parts in accordance with the development of science. To the title page it is noted that this work was published in year VII of the French Republican Calendar. The Republican Calendar began in year 1789 of the Gregorian Calendar. Year VII loosely translates to the Gregorian year 1798. In French. With the half-titles to each volume and errata to the rear of volume II. A smartly bound two volume set by this noted French scientist of the eighteenth century. In quarter calf bindings with paper covered boards. Externally very smart with just some minor shelfwear to the head and tail of spine and to the extremities. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright. Occasional light spots to pages. The journal founded in 1773 by Jean-Jacques Gardane doctor-regent of the Faculty of Medicine of Paris would run for 17 years with one volume per year except for the years 1773-1774. Jean-Jacques Gardane distinguished himself in the establishment in Paris of treatment houses for the poor and in the diffusion of fumigation boxes intended to revive the drowned and the asphyxiated of all kinds. From 1776 onwards the journal would be written by a society of physicians and Pinel was probably among the new editors from the end of 1784. The journal then played an important bibliographical role; scientific news was carefully reported but the periodical is especially notable at this stage for its declared fight against charlatanism and the section devoted to hygiene is particularly well represented; it is not impossible that it was written by Pinel himself see Roselyne Rey in Dictionnaire des journaux. Bottom corner chipped. <br/><br/>An updated edition of Delisle's important map of the Northern Hemisphere. When first printed in 1714 Delisle's map was the first to correctly place the west coast of North America by moving it farther east from previous mapping. California is correctly shown as a peninsula not an island. However this edition continues the coastline of the Pacific Northwest with a large island labeled Foufang that is apparently Chinese and serves as the western boundary of a large Mer de l'Ouest. Other conjectural rivers and lakes including Lake Valasco appear to the north. A rudimentary Alaska is named Presqu'Isle du Nord-Ouest. Bauche improved upon the depiction of Japan although Hokkaido Isle du Jeso is still not shaped correctly. Only a small remnant of the Terre de la Compagnie appears near Hokkaido. <br /> <br />Delisle or de l'Isle 1675-1726 was the son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini who among other important contributions aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. QuintusAuricularis quia cum minimum sit auribus expurgandis est aptissimus" translates as".the fifth finger called Auricularis because how small it is is most suitable to clean the ears". Incredibly anatomists at that time called the fifth digit "digitus auricularis".<br> Verheyen is credited with the creation of the eponym the “Achilles tendon†which denominates the common tendon for the gastrocnemius and soleus muscle although at the time he called it the “Chorda Achillisâ€. Linden - N. 559; van der Linde I 417f Second printing.</p><p>Van Zuylen van Nijevelt wrote a well-known treatise on the game of chess <em>La Supériorité aux Échecs </em>1792. The book's full title was<em> La Supériorité aux Échecs mise à la portée de tout le monde et particulierement des dames qui aiment cet amusement</em>. It was reprinted several times and translated into several languages.</p><p>The Dutch chess theorist Philippe Jules van Zuylen van Nyevelt was a civil servant general and published "<em>La supériorité aux échecs .</em>." <em>The Great Game of Chess.</em> in 1792. "The 'Volume de Planche' mentioned on the title page forms the second game for no other exists." van der Linde For a detailed discussion of the distinction between the first and second printings see van der Linde I 417 f. This edition is valued for its instructive examples on the management of pawns in the endgame. He was the first Dutchman to write a book on chess and probably also the first person to come up with the idea of random chess also known as shuffle chess a chess variant whereby the starting position of the main pieces is chosen at random. He wrote that he hated openings "with all those annoying constantly repeating patterns" and therefore thought of randomizing the starting positions of the chess pieces. "This produces a huge number of different situations so that no one can study them beforehand" according to Van Zuylen van Nijevelt</p><p><strong>Condition: T</strong>he plates and errata page are missing. 170655266Atlas de Geographie. Guillaume Delisle Quai de Horloge. 1706. The map is in two parts north and south they are both of equal size. The northern map has a decorated cartouche and shows the north of white Russia and part of the arctic coast reaches as far south as the Principality of Galicz. The southern map stretches to the northern tip of the Black Sea the Volga in the East and a tiny bit of the Baltic Coast in the North West. There are some text on the map about the inhabitants rivers etc A very handsome pair of maps. The plates were originally made by Delisle around 1700. Covens and Mortimer reissued them in the Atlas Novissimo 1730-40. Phillipe Buache de l'Isle's successor and son in law continued to reissue Delisle's maps in the later eighteenth century. The price is for the pair. Copper engraving. Very good condition slightly browned margins some sporadic spotting. Some nicks lower margins. Original colour. Size: 66 x 50 cm. 26 x 19½ inches unknown

It was in this context that Les Fêtes roulantes ou les regrets des petites rues came into being in the wake of the celebrations held in Paris in honour of the Dauphin's second marriage to Marie-Josèphe de Saxe. Pastiche binding in plum half-shagreen spine with five raised bands framed by gilt dotted fillets and six compartments decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons marbled paper boards gilt top edge pastedowns and endpapers in shell-pattern marbled paper. Some minor rubbing to the paper of the lower board corners slightly bumped. An essential work engendering modern history Commynes' work which moreover establishes a rule of political conduct for the Great ones of the kingdom forms the greatest source for this period. From 1472 to 1483 after having been counselor to the Duke of Burgundy Charles the Bold Commynes entered the service of Louis XI then of Charles VIII and Louis XII. He distinguished himself there through his diplomatic talents notably in Italy; consequently the Memoirs are also a history of Europe. Too often forgotten is that his exemplary career experienced an interlude of disgrace: opposing the young Charles VIII through his liberal ideas he rallied to the cause of the future Louis XII plot aimed at abducting Charles VIII. He was consequently arrested and locked in an iron cage at Loches for five months in 1488. To this day the work still being studied Commynes' Memoirs have never failed in success and interest. Denys Godefroy's critical edition replaced the one that had served as reference until then Savage's version. Originally published in 1725 with a different title this edition has two additional sections on the history of Tunis and Tripoli by the translator. A manuscript note tipped to the front pastedown possibly by H. H. Furness notes: "Mr. A. Périès seems to have been the owner of this book as evidenced by the two manuscript translations inserted and by the bookplate on whose motto his name appears "aperies". He was a fine classical scholar with a dainty gift of versification as shown by a little volume of translations published "by himself for himself" at Philadelphia in 1861. The author's name is not given the work is "by an idler" but has been ascertained from a copy containing his photograph and an autograph inscription to his friend John T. Montgomery."
