1770159238Paris: Chez l'Auteur sur le Quay de l'Horloge 1770. Updated edition of 1714 map. Near fine. 52 x 69 cm hand-coloured map. Centrefold. Bottom corner chipped. <br/><br/>An updated edition of Delisle's important map of the Northern Hemisphere. When first printed in 1714 Delisle's map was the first to correctly place the west coast of North America by moving it farther east from previous mapping. California is correctly shown as a peninsula not an island. However this edition continues the coastline of the Pacific Northwest with a large island labeled Foufang that is apparently Chinese and serves as the western boundary of a large Mer de l'Ouest. Other conjectural rivers and lakes including Lake Valasco appear to the north. A rudimentary Alaska is named Presqu'Isle du Nord-Ouest. Bauche improved upon the depiction of Japan although Hokkaido Isle du Jeso is still not shaped correctly. Only a small remnant of the Terre de la Compagnie appears near Hokkaido. <br /> <br />Delisle or de l'Isle 1675-1726 was the son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini who among other important contributions aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. 1716009704Paris: Jacques Collombat 1716 In-4 10 96 271 1 pp. engraved additional allegorical title by Richardou depicting a seated figure of Astronomy surrounded by putti with scientific instruments and maritime motifs; printed title in red and black with woodcut device; woodcut diagrams throughout. Contemporary sprinkled calf spine with raised bands gilt sprinckled edges rubbing to extremities endpapers browned. From the library of the Earl of Macclesfield with his 1860 armorial bookplate on the paste-down and embossed armorial stamps on the title-page and the first page. Philippe Desplaces 1659-1736 an astronomer attached to the Paris Observatory belongs to the generation following Jean-Dominique Cassini and Philippe de La Hire whose observational and computational work helped establish France as a leading centre of astronomical science in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Drawing directly on La Hire's tables he produced the official Paris ephemerides for the years 1715-1744 issued in three volumes between 1716 and 1734 of which the present volume is the first. The work reflects the increasing precision and institutionalization of astronomical calculation serving both scientific inquiry and practical needs such as navigation calendrical reform and the standardization of time across different meridians. It includes a preface and introduction comprising among other elements a historical account of the calendar and tables of the sun’s declination followed by the ephemerides for each year 1715-1724 giving movable feasts eclipses and tables of planetary motions. The volume also contains detailed instructions for adapting the ephemerides to different meridians with worked examples for Paris Rome Quebec City and other cities. Houzeau-Lancaster 15464. The illustrator Jacques de Sève's main work was unquestionably the Histoire naturelle générale et particulière for which he executed nearly 2000 drawings. Unlike the illustrations he produced for other sections of Buffon's monumental work made primarily from stuffed specimens his work on birds was essentially executed from living models. To accomplish this vast project Jacques de Sève drew inspiration from the works of the king's ""Peintre ordinaire"" Jean-Baptiste Oudry. This judicious decision won him the favor of the queen a great admirer of the master of animal painting. By incorporating small Boucher-style putti in the introductory vignettes of certain volumes of the Histoire naturelle des oiseaux Sève also gained the good graces of the king's mistress. These illustrations at once decorative and scholarly which appear in the present first edition were not retained in the duodecimo edition. A superb complete copy of Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon's Histoire naturelle des oiseaux by the French Pliny. As Ferdinand Hoefer wrote this work maintains the same ""magnificence of style"" as the other publications in the Histoire naturelle générale et particulière. Imprimerie royale hardcover

Typical of all of his work the information that went into his map of Canada was the result of careful and painstaking research. It thus seems somewhat surprising that the dubious discoveries of Lahontan should have been so readily accepted and included on his map of Canada. De l'Isle's careful research resulted in the first map of Canada to present the whole of the Great Lakes correctly. In addition the position of the lakes relative to Hudson Bay is also correct and the Avalon Peninsula is shown much more realistically than in previous maps of Canada. Franco Crainz rubber stamp on title. Very good. FIRST EDITION. Title translates as: 'ON THE INDECENCY OF MALE PHYSICIANS ATTENDING TO WOMEN IN CHILD-BIRTH. ' In this work the pious French physician and theologian Philippe Hecquet argued that it is immodest and indecent to have male accoucheurs deliver their children and that a woman had a 'natural right' to have a female midwife deliver their baby. In the second part of this two-part work Hecquet argues that it is a woman's duty to nurse her infant. He documents the problems of producing milk for nursing and concerns about the health of the mother. Philippe Hecquet was 'M.D. of Reins 1684 and physician to Port-Royal 1688-93. . . Hecquet . . . had to enter the Paris Faculty as a student in 1694 obtaining the license two years later and the 'bonnet de docteur' in 1697. A treatise on the use of opium and other narcotics in the treatment of disease. Hecquet physician at the Charite Hospital in Paris was a confirmed mechanist and a longtime opponent of chemical medicine which he attacked in several publications. Externally very worn and chipped spine appears to have been treated with a glossy preservative at some point. The pages are lightly yellowed with occasional foxing minor blemishes a handful of pencil check marks. The plan of Algiers has some extra-creasing small tears and a little reinforcement verso.
