br. Fino a che punto uno scrittore può odiarne un altro, che pure non ha mai incontrato di persona? Lo scontro tra Céline e Proust (o, meglio, la battaglia di Céline contro Proust) è l'esempio più lampante di una contrapposizione da un lato distruttrice, dall'altro produttrice. «Proust e Céline: ecco la mia inesauribile felicità di lettore»: così scrisse Lévi-Strauss in uno dei primi accostamenti tra questi grandi nomi della narrativa francese del Novecento. Ebreo, omosessuale, frequentatore dell'alta società parigina il primo; figlio di piccoli commercianti, cattolico e antisemita, solitario e omofobo il secondo. Più che di un duello, sarebbe corretto parlare di un'«aggressione postuma». Céline, infatti, esordì dieci anni dopo la morte dell'autore della "Recherche" e la sua intransigenza, espressa in una scrittura spesso astiosa e in cerca di un bersaglio, raggiunge l'apice quando è rivolta verso il connazionale. Tuttavia sono molti i tratti che li accomunano, a partire dalla centralità dello stile, passando poi per il nichilismo, l'ipocondria, il «gran rifiuto» che entrambi ricevettero dall'editore Gallimard. In una cavalcata leggera e disinvolta attraverso le loro opere, Valerio Magrelli ci mostra come i due autori entrano in collisione, e arriva a sorprenderci con un finale inaspettato.
