Sammelband with 3 rare religious treatises, contains a series of prophecies attributed to Joachim of Fiore (12th ct.), as well as apocalyptic visions of the Franciscan friar Johann Hilten (15th ct.) in a protestant pamphlet by Andreas Engel, and finally a collection of songs and rhetorical figures by the protestant humanist Giovanni Bernardino Bonifacio (16th ct.) - Content: Present Sammelband starts with the Bertoni bilingual (Latin, Italian) edition of the »Vaticinia«, that assembles 34 elaborate full-paged engravings depicting portraits of popes in the middle of allegoric, seemingly bizarre scenes showing (pseudo-)prophecies related to them. The engraving title page shows a portrait of Fiore in the centre. The 2nd volume contains a tendentious comment of Brandenburg clergyman and historian Andreas Engel (named Angelus) of apocalyptic visions by Franciscan friar Johann Hilten, who was claimed by the protestants to have been their predecessor in the 15th ct. Engel also quotes prophecies about the fall of Papacy and of the Ottoman Empire. Finally the 3rd volume contains a collection of religious songs and rhetorical figures (epigrams, paradoxa) by the protestant Italian humanist Giovanni Bernardino Bonifacio (16th ct.), founder of the Danzig city library, edited shortly after Bonifacio's dead by Andreas Welsius. - Condition: Spine professionally restored at joints. Title page of »Vaticinia« (1) enforced at margin, one engraving with annotatios made with ink, inside in parts slightly finger and time-stained as well as minimally foxy. Bookblock cut uniformly by the binder, 3rd part with tight cut and therefore minimal loss of pagination at two leaves. - Holdings, Rarity: VD16 quotes 4 copies in Germany for »Miscellanea hymnorum« (Dresden (SLUB), Halle (ULB ), Göttingen (SUB), Wolfenbüttel (HAB), WorldCat/OCLC another additional two copies worldwide (BnF, BL); the same for »Weissagungen«: 5 copies in Germany (Dresden (SLUB), ULB (Halle), Göttingen (SUB), Weimar (HAAB), Wolfenbüttel (HAB) and one copy in Solothurn according to VD16 and WorldCat/OCLC. - References: (1) VD16 O 899; Adams J214; Hohenemser 178. Folio (ca. 220 x 337 mm). (216) pp. With 106 woodcut illustrations within the text, 85 of which full-page. Woodcut printer's devices to title-page and final page verso. - (Bound with) II: Strein von Schwarzenau, Richard. Gentium et familiarum Romanarum stemmata. [Geneva], Stephanus (Estienne), 1559. (120) pp. With woodcut title-vignette. Contemporary full vellum. First edition. - The first complete edition of this "curious book" (cf. Graesse), a "state handbook of the military and civil organisation of the late Roman Empire" (cf. Hieronymus). Compiled anonymously around 410, the classical text and illustrations were passed on in several manuscripts, first appeared in print in abridged form in 1529 and were published in the present version by the classicist Gelen (ca. 1498-1554), who worked as an editor and translator at the Froben printing office. The woodcut illustrations were created by Conrad Schnitt (1495-1541), except for pp. 6f and 23 (Imperium Orientale, Imperium Occidentale, Constantinople), which probably originate from the hand of Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch (1525-71). They show, inter alia, allegoric depictions of parts of the Empire, the insignia of court, civil and military authorities, as well as statues, small buildings and books. Includes the petition to the emperor on warfare ("De rebus bellicis"), the corresponding illustrations, not all of which by Schnitt, showing chariots, ships and other military equipment. The treatise on civil and military organisation by Andrea Alciato, the topographic description of classical Rome by Publius Victor and the conversation between Emperor Hadrian and the philosopher Epictetus can be found towards the end. - Bound with this is a genealogical work on the origins of Roman families by the Austrian historian Strein von Schwarzenau (1538-1600), giving a short description of each family, with a family tree. - With contemporary ownership of the library of the Piarist school in Schlackenwerth (now Ostrov) to the title-page; a previous ownership crossed out. A library shelfmark to the pastedown. A page marker to the final leaf of the "Notitia". Binding somewhat brownstained. Paper evenly browned throughout with very slight brownstaining and waterstaining to a few pages. First and only edition of this probably rarest work by the Bregenz-born historiographer. The book was published "on the occasion of Albrecht of Brandenburg's creation as cardinal in honour of his defence of Christianity against the Turks, and the awarding of a sword and helmet-like fur cap, blessed by Pope Leo X on Christmas Day, to Emperor Maximilian through the hands of the Papal legates Cajetan and Lang" (cf. Zweite, ergänzte Ausgabe von Münsters erstmals 1523 herausgebrachtem hebräischen Wörterbuch. Folio. (416) ff. Hebrew type, 4 cols. With woodcut printer's device on title page. 17th century calf with gilt spine and cover rules; gilt Jesuit device to cover. Edges tinted yellow. Rare second Venetian edition of the first Hebrew Bible concordance (first published by Bomberg in 1523), with a new Latin dedication to Maggio Parentini. Words are arranged etymologically by roots and stems; the order of the books follows that of the Vulgate. The Arles-born Rabbi Isaac Nathan ben Kalonimus (fl. 1400-48) compiled the work commonly referred to as "Meir Nativ" ("Light of the Way") between 1437 and 1447 with the twofold aim to facilitate the study of Biblical exegesis and to keep Jews who had converted to Christianity from misquoting the Bible in religious controversies (cf. Jewish Encyclopaedia). Nathan himself moved in Christian scholarly circles and participated in theological disputations with his Christian colleagues. Notably, he based his present concordance on a work compiled by the Franciscan Arlotto de Prato. Occasionally (as here) the book is falsely attributed to Isaac's nephew Mordechai Nathan. - Text ruled in red throughout; the edges' yellow paint has seeped into the margins in places. Title page somewhat brownstained; a few corner defects early on, otherwise very clean and largely unbrowned. Ms. ownership of the Jesuit college at Chambéry (Savoy), dated 1585, on title (and repeated on last leaf but one); old stamp and long bibliographical note in French (c. 1900). Binding somewhat rubbed; spine professionally repaired. No copy in U.S. libraries. Adams B 1953. BM-STC Italian 104. Steinschneider 5399.3. Fürst III, 22. OCLC 257608293. Not in Edit 16.

This pocket-size booklet contained everything a doctor needed to know to make use of the technique in mid-sixteenth century Europe. - As typical of humanist medical studies, the anonymous work begins with a brief reflection on the Greek origins of cupping. It then describes the uses of the technique for the extraction of blood and the manipulation of the humours. Already on page 4 the relative safety of the non-invasive procedure is emphasised: "Idque auxilium ut minus vehemens, ita magis tutum". The author then goes on to discuss the various materials used for making the cups or "cucurbitulae" (literally, "little pumpkins" or "gourds"), how to use them, for how long, where in the various areas of the body, and against which ailments they can be employed. Modern readers interested in the history of the use of cupping to reduce pain and inflammation in the lower back will be pleased to see mention of the technique to this end on pp. 27-28. - The book has moderate to severe browning to the edges of the pages thoughout, more pronounced on pp. 11-14 but not affecting the text. On the first and final pages, the cover has formerly become adhesed to the paper, the later removal of which has left marks. The paper cover shows some black staining to the spine; numerous tears in the wrapper reveal frequent use. Rare. BM-STC French 126. Adams D 169. Wellcome I, 1690. OCLC 17534872. Not in Durling.
